Hi, Last time I promise, please could anybody give me their opinion on the place of birth in another of my famillies at the 1851. It is a Joseph Stevenson I think down as being born about 1816 in Leek, the places of birth I can't read are his wife Mary's and a visitor who I think is Mary's sister, Eliza A Walker (Mary's maiden name was Walker). I think Eliza A's is Seighford but I'm not sure.
As usual am very grateful for any help anyone is able to give me
Thanks
Anna
PS They are living in Spout Street in Leek if this helps

Hi Kena
Joseph's place of birth is Ipstones, which is about 5.5 miles South East of Leek
Mary's place of birth could be Gailey which is in Staffordshire

Mary was born in Gritley and Eliza in Saford.

Hi Ricky, Thanks very much for this, have found this already, I haven't had too many problems with the Stevenson's really, it is just Mary's family that are giving me the headache, all I know (from her marriage certificate) is that Mary's father was John Walker a gamekeeper.
Thanks again

Hi Mike, Thanks very much for looking for me, am not sure if Gritley and Saford are actually real names of places in Staffordshire though. I know there is a Grindley and there is a Eliza Ann Walker baptised 1831 in Seighford. Also on the 1861 Mary gives her place of birth as Uttoxeter.
Any other help welcome peeps

Hi Ricky Hi Kena,
You are right Ricky, Gailey is a small area I live just down the road from it. There is a church at Gaily which was taken out of service in the 1980s and is now a pottery. However the graveyard is still intact around it. It was a rural area until the M6, and other major roads were put in. There are some local estates that would have required a game keeper - I don't know if this is relevant or not. Seighford is on the outskirts of Stafford and Uttoxeter is about 14 miles from Stafford.

Hi Cathy, Thanks very much for that, is Gaily very close to Uttoxeter please do you know?
Thanks again

Hi Kena
According to my autoroute its about 22 miles, might have been closer in them days as autoroute uses the main roads etc

Hi Ricky, Thanks very much for that.

Hi Kena, Hi Ricky
Ricky's autoroute is about right, it takes about 45 mins from where I live to get to Uttoxeter. Don't know if this is of interest but Church records may come under Penkridge and the relevant registers for the time frame you are interested in are deposted at the County Records Office at Stafford.

Hi Cathy, Thanks very much for that, am hoping to go to the record office in Lichfield in the near future so will look there.
Please does anybody think that Saford could be Seighford, would really help and would be forever grateful.

Saford could be Stafford which is about 3 miles east of Seighford as the crow flies
Seighford is a small village at the side of the site of a wartime airfield
Gailey is to the south and Uttoxeter to the north

Hi Toj, Thanks very much for that, I have been to Seighford once before to check out the graves once before for another line of my family, a nice little village. Since starting this topic I have managed to work out my Walker's a little and the person born in "Saford" was baptised in Seighford but of Coton. Haven't been on here for a while as broke my leg in a horse related incident, not even a proper fall just dismounting, was in hospital for 9 days, had an op and am now sitting in a wheelchair in front of the computer with plaster going halfway up my thigh. Feel free to send out any ahs!

Hello,
There is a small place called Coton Clanford just south of Seighford, which could be the Coton to which you refer. I looked at it on www.maps.google.co.uk and put Coton Clanford, Staffordshire in the search box.

Hi Handm, Thanks very much for that.

There is a Coton within yards of where I live (Gnosall or gnosall Heath to be exact)
Howeve there is a tiny hamlet called Coton Clanford which is on the opposite side of the airfield from Seighford. Of course there was no airfield then.
Best of luck

Hi Toj, Thanks for that.
