Could someone please find David MURGATROYD in the 1871 census? (and 1861 and 1851 if you have access to them). David married Betty HALKYARD 20 Feb 1865 at Christ Church, Glodwick, Oldham. In the 1871 census, they should have 3 children; William (b. 10 Jul 1865), Jane (b. 14 May 1868), and John (b. 14 Apr 1870). All were born in Oldham according to the 1881 and 1891 census, however the IGI says they were christened at St Chad's, Rochdale. Their address in 1881 was "8 Ct 5 Greenacres Old Rd, Oldham". David's father was also named David and his occupation was "Weaver" on David & Betty's marriage certificate, 20 Feb 1865.
Thanks.

Hi WG
I've not had any luck locating David Jnr in 1871, hopefully another pair of eyes will find them for you.

Thanks very much Annie. That's a big help.

HI WG...If you go to UKBMD..Oldham is now putting online for Baptisms the maiden name of the mother....
The last 4 Murgatroyd children on the 1871 census do not seem to be David andJane's children..they are in fact the children of their eldest son Joseph who married Sarah Chadwick at St.Mathews,Chadderton in 1863...
It also gives a full list of Murgatroyd children with the mothers name of Halkyard....
Have the 1851 name index for Oldham but can not find any Murgatroyds.....wonder if they had moved up the road a bit to the Lee's area....some of that is on the Yorkshire census (Saddleworth)...
If you have no luck......i could have a look for you on Saturday (am off to the local archives then)
Regards..

Thanks LancsLass. That's a good tip about UKBMD and maiden names.
I looked up Joseph in the 1881 census and found him with his wife Sarah and their children; Thomas, Alice, Samuel, James and Robert. No sign of Elizabeth though. And there's no Elizabeth Murgatroyd, born 1870, at UKBMD with mother's maiden name CHADWICK. There's an Elizabeth Ann Murgatroyd born 1870 but the mother's maiden name is shown as MURGATROYD. I wonder if that's a mistake?
Re 1851: I found them in the Ancestry.com index as "Margatede". Unfortunately, I don't have a subscription so I can't get the details. All I can get is:
Civil Parish: Oldham
Name Birth Year Relation
David Margatede abt 1811 Head
Jane Margatede abt 1813 Wife
Elizabeth Margatede abt 1833 Daughter
Harriet Margatede abt 1836 Daughter
Joseph Margatede abt 1841 Son
David Margatede abt 1845 Son
Thomas Margatede abt 1848 Son
Mary Ellen Margatede abt 1850 Daughter
If someone can post the details, I'd appreciate it very much.

I've noticed that the reported birthplace of David sr. is different in each census.
1851 - Halifax
1861 - Hovenden
1871 - Hendon
I believe Halifax is in Yorkshire but I'm not familiar with the other two places. Are/were they in Yorkshire too? Any ideas why the birthplace would be different in each census?

Sorry, should have said Celia is the wife of Joseph Chapman.
I would think the 1861 birthplace for David Snr is Ovenden which would come under the registration district of Halifax, Yorkshire.
Not sure of Hendon but will have a look.

WG - Although the 1871 has been transcribed as Hendon it is Ovenden on the original.
I have ancestors in Ovenden, Langfield and Todmorden and they were all registered under Halifax.

Thanks Sheila. That makes sense now. It sounds like he was born in Ovenden and the birth was registered in nearby Halifax.
By the way, I noticed you're researching BURKEs from Ireland and Lancashire. My 3x-great-grandfather was Michael BURKE, a shoe maker born in Ireland about 1840. He married Hannah Elger COPE about 1864 in Manchester, then they moved to London. I'm not sure how long Michael's family lived in Lancashire, but I think I've found them in the 1861 census in Salford (unconfirmed). I know Burke is a pretty common name, so my Burkes might not be connected to yours, but if you want to compare notes, perhaps you could send me a personal message or start a new topic.

I'll send you details of my Burke's by PM.
