Title: German Clockmakers in Birmingham!!!
Post by: Sorcha on Tuesday 19 September 06 08:55 BST (UK)
Yes really... my grandad x 4 , Fidel Beurle, was a journeyman clockmaker who married in Birmingham in 1855, his witness was Michael Zahringer, also clockmaker and my grandma x 4's witness was Charlotte Fritz, wife of Matthias Fritz, also clockmaker.  I'm interested to see if anybody else has happened upon these clockmakers in their research or indeed knows anything of this trade in this area around the 1850's - 1860's.

Hi Sorcha,

no time to go into this at the moment, so I'll get back to you later,
but I just entered uhrmacher zähringer in my german google and turned up several hits

Uhrmacher = Clockmaker, and I am guessing that Zahringer may have been Zähringer, originally.

More later,
Bob

It's now "later"  ;D

Strictly speaking, this is off topic, because it's information about Zähringer in Germany, which is not what you were asking, but in case you want to follow it up, here it is  :)

Might be worth getting in touch with this guy, he has a website with various other clockmakers, and mentions Zähringer
http://www.schwaerimnetz.de/ in particular, here
http://www.schwaerimnetz.info/Ahnen/namen.htm#Z

Someone called Sterk also has a website on german clockmakers, and mentions Zähringer.
http://www.ahnenforschung-sterk.de/

Sterk has another site where he mentions clockmakers who emigrated to England, so he might be able to give you some tips on the "how" and "why"
http://de.geocities.com/ahnende/emiengland.html

Guessing again, I tried uhrmacher bäurle in a search engine (it's spoken almost the same as Beurle, or Beuerle) and found this website (search within the page for uhrmacher
http://www.ewac.be/magera/Fiches/D3/P8.htm

If you do want to try contacting any of them ('Kontakt'), then try english first and if you have any problems, let me know, I'll act as contact-man.
