Hi, having just spent a week in Gloucestershire researching my family history I have now hit a complete stone wall regarding my ancestors and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how I could proceed or even if I can proceed as have run out of ideas as to where to search.
I am trying to locate the parents of George Derrick born about 1773, believed to be in Gloucestershire.
He married Mary Gregory at Frocester on 6 Nov 1798 and on his grave it states he's from the parish of Eastington and in his will he states that his of the Parish of Eastington.
We also found two more marriages as follows:
Johnathan Derrick m Joanna Organ 1 April 1801 Frocester
Joanna Derrick m Nathaniel Pope 25 Jan 1803 Frocester
We are assuming that these are his siblings, but we can find no trace of parents.
We went to Frocester but the original church has collapsed. We scoured the graveyard but to no avail. I know George and Mary are buried in Leonard Stanley which is about a mile down the road.
This is all very frustrating as this is the one arm of the family I really wanted to trace and am having no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where else I can look?
Thanks in advance for any advice given.

Have you tried the parish registers at Gloucester Record Office? I have found valuable information in these baptismal registers listing parents and then finding their marriage entries which listed their respective fathers names. They do a phone service also.

The surname Derrick seems to be much more common in adjacent Somerset than in Gloucestershire. The National Burial index (most Gloucestershire parishes on the NBI only have coverage from 1813 - not all are covered) has only two Derrick burials between 1813-1826 (no burial at Frocester 1813-1866)
30th December 1817
Merina Maria DERRICK
aged 1
Gloucs Eastington [nr Stonehouse, St Michael & All Angels
8th February 1818
Susannah DERRICK
aged 61
Gloucs Mangotsfield, St James
For Somerset 1807-1826 there are 76.
No burials at Leonard Stanley until 1829 when there are 13 up to 1854. The only Jonathan Derrick in Gloucestershire was buried in Gloucester, but he would be too young for the 1801 marriage. You would have to check the actual register to see if the age transcribed is correct.
30th June 1843
Jonathan DERRICK
aged 50 Gloucs
Gloucester, St Nicholas
But in Leonard Stanley Joanna Pope nee Derrick's age on burial gives you another potential birth year.
4th April 1819
Johannah POPE
aged 45
Gloucs Leonard Stanley, St Swithun
6th December 1833
Nathaniel POPE
aged 73 Gloucs
Leonard Stanley, St Swithun
The only Jonathan Derrick on the 1841 census in Gloucestershire - of sufficient age was in Newnham
HO107 369/3 folio 29 page 25
Curriers Lane? Newnham Gloucestershire
Jonathan Derrick 56 Gloucestershire Waterman
Catherine Derrick 29 Gloucestershire
Jonathan Derrick 6 Gloucestershire

Thanks, will use this information to see if I can move forward (or should that be backwards!) with my research. I know there is a large Derrick family in Somerset but as yet have failed to link my family to them. If only I could find the parents of George, Johnathan and Joanna then I would really be getting somewhere but they are not listed on their marriage certificates. Thanks again

I have a friend who is one of the Gloucestershire Derricks and I know that one of the family has done a lot of research. I will pass your query onto her and will get back to you.
Best wishes

That would be fantastic! Thank you so much. I came to Gloucestershire about a month ago and met up with some American cousins, we did a whilstlestop tour of the villages and graveyards. I never realised that there were any Gloucester Derricks around still, so I would be exceptionally grateful if you could pass on my details. I have a website located at www.freewebs.com/mygenes which has a large section dedicated to the Derrick family where they can see what I have so far if that is of any help. I have traced most of the descendants to around the 1900's.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. They can also email me direct through my site. Thank you once again,

Have had a look at your website - most impressive ;D
I'll get back to you as soon as I've managed to get hold of her (she's a very hardworking bunny....)
Best wishes

Hi have had email from Victoria who I am assuming is the lady you said you would put me in touch with. She is going to speak to her Aunt. Thank you once again.

I'm glad she got in touch. I'll make sure she keeps focussed ;D
Good hunting!

Sorry to butt in , but being nosey I had a look at your website Mygenes2006 - and it is really wonderful - a pleasure to browse through - really impressive.

I thought so too - I particularly liked the search lists, which I thought were a generous use of the data Mygenes2006 had already found.

Thank you for your lovely comments regarding my website. It took me about 10 years to collate the information and then about a month to put it together in a format that everyone can use. As you notice there is still a bit of work to do but so far have been able to connect about 20 Dudley cousins plus a few others.
Would recommend freewebs to anyone wanting to build their own site, only costs about £10 a year I think and the tools for building your own site are very very easy to use.
Once again, thanks for your comments, they are much appreciated.
