Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place to post so please move if not.
Would there have been somewhere that unmarried mothers went to around 1900 e.g. a hostel or something in the not too local vicinity or would they have been banished to London or anywhere they could get too?
I'm looking for a birth, to a local woman but it may not have been registered locally - or would it?
thanks for any help

She could have gone to a workhouse or something like that either that or she could be with another relative away from the main family.
Out of interest what was she doing for a living? If she was a serving girl/housemaid she may have gone home to another town in another district. my family tree has this happening one of the girls was working in St Albans got pregnant by someone in the house she was working at and was sent home to huntingdon.
Hope this helps

Hi Helen,
Thanks for your reply, she was born in 1887c so on the 1901 census she would possibly be at school, but I will look her up just in case!
