Hi Michael
The children showing for this couple on IGI, including an Alexander:
1. HUGH BAIN Birth: 23 MAR 1840 Christening: 06 APR 1840 Inverness, Inverness, Scotland
2. ISABELLA BAIN Birth: 25 JUN 1855 Inverness, Inverness, Scotland
3. WILLIAM BAIN Birth: 03 OCT 1841 Christening: 04 OCT 1841 Inverness, Inverness, Scotland
4. GEORGE MC DONALD BAIN Birth: 28 APR 1858 Inverness, Inverness, Scotland
5. ALEXANDER BAIN Birth: 16 DEC 1843 Christening: 25 DEC 1843 Inverness, Inverness, Scotland
This could be James and Margaret in the 1841 Census from FreeCen:
BAIN James, 25, Journeyman Joiner b. Outside Census County
BAIN Magt, 20, b. Outside Census County
BAIN Hugh, 1, b. Inverness-shire
BAIN Donald, 30, Journeyman Carpenter, b. Inverness-shire
Address: Kings Street, Inverness-Inverness-shire
Just some ideas for gathering more info:
1. If you look at the family's entry for the 1851 census, you can find out where James and Margaret were born, as they both show as being born outside of Inverness-shire in the 1841 Census.
2. There is a death entry In Inverness, Inverness-shire on Scotlands People, the official pay to view BMD and Census site, for a Margaret Bain, other name McDonald, in 1895 with a birth year of 1818. If you decide to view it, it will confirm that it's the correct Margaret and give you her parents. Also you can find out whether James is deceased or still alive to help you search for his death cert (and parents).
3. There is an 1855 birth cert showing for Isabella. 1855, the first year of official registration in Scotland is the best year for certs. For one year only the certificates ran over two pages, including a wealth of additional info. Normally, for birth certs that year, you can find out where the parents were born/ages, how many children they had had, marriage date etc.
Regards.

From the 1881 Census, this could be Margaret Bain, already a widow:
BAIN Margaret, widow, annuitant, age 60, b. Applecross, Ross & Cromarty
BEATON Joana, g/daughter, age 4, b. Applecross, Ross & Cromarty
Address: 36 Rose Street, Inverness, Inverness-shire
There are only two entries for Margaret Bain age 60-65, in Inverness for the 1881 Census, the other Margaret shows as born in Inverness-shire.

From your info, I think we are from the same family. I am descendant from Hugh Bain born 23/03/1840 Inverness (Alexander Bain's brother). Hugh was married on 24/10/1862 Inverness and died 03/02/1887 Kelvin, Glasgow. His parents were James Bain born 1815 Keiss, Inverness. Married Margaret McDonald 28/10/1939. Margaret McDonald born 1820 Keiss, Inverness and died 08/08/1895 Scotland. I think James parents could be Donald Bain and Margaret Anderson of Halwick but no further information. Any info you have would be appreciated.
