Hi Claire,
ah,got a problem here.My Step grandfather was born about 1872/3 .His name was Walter and his father was called Daniel(this is all I know of him.I got it from his wedding certificate except that he always said he came from bradford or Barnsley-can't remember what my father used to say.Mind you that could mean the general area).Unless his age was wrong at his marriage Mary Rayner couldn't have been his mother?
Help!
This family seemed so right and still have my suspicions that this Daniel Rayner might be the right one.
Sue.

Trisha:
Robert and Betty (née Hemingway) Rayner were my Great Great Grandparents. According to the 1851 census, Daniel and Mary (née Hemingway) Rayner were lodgers at their house on Boothroyd Lane, Dewsbury. We are currently pursuing the possibility that Daniel and Robert were cousins or second cousins. It would seem that the Hemingway women had a thing for Rayner men.
Robert's father was Robert Rayner of Dewsbury. His father, we believe, was Thomas Rayner of Dewsbury, my Great Great Great Great Grandfather. Robert the elder had a brother named Thomas and Daniel's baptism record lists his father as Thomas. Since Robert (the younger) and Daniel were close in age, we think Thomas (the younger) may have been Daniel's father. We're still in the process of trying to sort this out. I have quite a bit of information on the Robert Rayner chain up to the present day.
Hope this helps...

Hi,
I'm very interested in your post.
As you have read I'm trying to find the family of my step grandfather Walter RAYNER/RAYNOR.As you can also sumise I've got a problem with the Daniel Rayner/Mary Hemingway link(which was a real shame as it seemed to fit so well :'().My step grandfather was 46 on July 25th 1918(according to his marriage certificate) .He was therefore born 1871/72 which means he can't be their son(unless Walter gave the wrong age?).He was also a bachelor when he married.
Do you have any info about a Walter Raynor born about that time. The slightest info would be great.
Look forward to hearing from you.It would be great to knock over this particular brick wall-lol.

Trisha:
This might be a lead for you. I've found a Walter Rayner born in 1871 in Thornhill, Dewsbury of parents Thomas and Mary Rayner. Thornhill Parish is the parish church of the Hemingway family which is why this particular record caught my eye. Perhaps Daniel and and the elder Mary Rayner were his grandparents.
One of the major problems in researching the Rayners, especially in the West Riding, is that there are just so many of them. Another researcher I've been working with has counted 64 separate Rayner families in one parish alone. It quickly becomes a daunting task especially when the records are vague or incomplete.
I hope this helps...

Hi,
many thanks for the info.It is inded very interesting. It occured to me that perhaps Walter was brought up by his grandfather at some stage very early in his life and considered him as a father or perhaps Thomas' middle name was Daniel(after his father ) and he was always known as Daniel.I should try and trace this Thomas back through the censuses of 1861/71 and 81 to try and see if there are any clues there.
Many thanks for the help,
Trisha. ;D ;D ;D

You're welcome Trisha. I hope that helps. Forgot to mention I found the lead on IGI. There were a few other Walters listed but that was the only record for 1871 and it had the tantalizing Thornhill link...
I forgot to mention something that Suz pointed out in my Robert Rayner thread. Apparently in the 1841 census, individuals over the age of 15 had their age rounded down to the nearest five which can cause some confusion over the age recorded and known birth dates.
