Hi Elaine, could you please send me details of the Herd marriages? Youve certainly done some research. I take my hat off to you!
Matthew :D
-
Do you mean the Herd burials?
Elaine
-
Hi Elaine, any info you have on Herd families in Fife would be greatly appreciated, I saw M. I and thought it was Marriage Index!! :-[
Regards
Matthew :)
-
Surprising there's only one but keep in mind these are
headstones not a burial index.
Many more people were buried without a headstone than were,
because as stone was too expensive to buy.
Auchterderran:
William Herd, 23.3.1907, 75 yrs
Wife Margaret Clark 20.3.1912, 78 yrs
son David, 27.10.1855, 20 years
daughter Janet, 31.3.1852, 23 months
None in Kinglassie.
I have tons of other info on Auchterderran. If you give me some names
and dates I will see if I can find anything else for you.
Elaine
-
Cheers Elaine, Im trying to find David P Herd, I know he died in 1876, but I dont know where, I have a funy feeling it may be Auchterderran or Abbottshall. His wifes name was Isabella Rennie.
The majority of people living in Scotland at this time did not have headstones erected. Its a shame :(
Thanks again for the info!
Matthew

My stuff is mostly early 1900's though I do have a couple of things

Hi Elaine
Thank you for the info.
Not sure yet if there is a link with my Fife Steedmans who lived Kinghorn/Kirkcaldy/Abbotshall/Linkstown (and possibly Aucherderran before that) but will check things out.
My reply was also delayed because of my trip home to Scotland. What a popular holiday destination! Hope you enjoyed your trip as much as I did mine.
Thanks again - it's much appreciated.
best wishes

Hi Kathy,
Do you mean Christie and Penman on the MI's or any of the other lists
I recently posted?
Whereabouts in the US are you? I'm in California.
Elaine
-
I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I saw that you had headstone names from the cemeteries in Fife, and in those names were the surnames of Christie and Penman and my Christie's and Penman's were from Auchterderran, Kinglassie, and Leslie. I was in Fife this last summer and visted cemeteries in Kinglassie and Leslie and did find some family headstones. Just wondering what you had on these names. I am in Reno, Nevada. Where in California are you?
Kathy Dunn
-
Hi again!
We're practically neighbors! I'm in South Orange County but we got married in
Rocklin California (Sacramento!) Haven't been to Reno in years but my own
neighbors moved back there 2 years ago.
Those are great Auchterderran names! One of my aunties in Bowhill lived
across the street from Christies. And I lived in Leslie for a time when
I was a baby. Small world eh? Are you Scottish?
Anyway, names:
Auchterderran:
William Penman, 18.4.1896, 74
wife Margaret Christie, 2.4.1891, 68
children: Christina Miller Penman & Thomas Christie Penman
Infant: Jane 9.3.1864, 4
Thomas Christie Penman 23.3.1865 9m
son William 22.10.1933, 76
Helen Christie 21.1.1828, 51
James Suttie 31.12.1837, 29
John Penman 1838
Kinglassie
Alex Greig merchant here, 18.5.1873, 70
Ann Christie 5.6.1869, 66
children Helen 7.4.1873, 34
Cecil 5.5.1873, 36
David & Robert infants

I tried to attach a document listing miner's killed in Auchterderran pits but it wouldn't accept it so I'll just have to write them down.
Andrew Greig, Dundonald colliery, age 48, killed 2/10/1924
Also a Peter Grieve, Dundonald colliery, age 60, killed 27/10/1952
Also have a photo of a football team from Cardenden Primary school in 1950/51 with a
M. Grieve. If you are interested send me a private message with your email.

Thank you very much Elaine,
It is the Greig & Craigie families I'm more interested in

Hi Elaine,
I noticed you had Conaghans and Gallaghers on your page and wondered if you had any info on them. I am looking for William Conaghan(c 1765) a farmer married to Helen Docherty from either Donegal or Derry. They had a son John who married margaret Gallagher and then Susan Gallagher. He moved to Glasgow in 1836 and had 16 children that we know of. On one birth certificate from 1856 it stated that John was born in Derry but family says it was definately Donegal. Hope you can help. Thanks. Lorna
-
Sorry I don't have too much on the Irish side. There are too many people with the same name
intermarried within a family to try and sort out who is who. In addition there are very few records
before the mid 1800's.
The best site for Donegal research is:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/
An excellent site and the most thorough on the web.
Good luck

Thanks Elaine will just have to keep looking.

Hi Elaine
Many Many thanks for the info on Auchterderran M.I.'s. Alexander Abercrombie and Catherine Moyes were my g.g.g.g.g grandparents. I am sure that some of the Wemyss mentioned must also by relatives (I will keep digging). I would be grateful for the sketch of the locations of the graves - I have taken photo's of the churchyard so it would be good to see if I can place them. I am new to "Roots Chat" so don't know the formula needed to receive scans - help needed. Will now need to find out if someone out there has M.I's post 1855 as I know that other family members are buried there.

When I saw Abercrombie and Moyes together I figured they were probably yours! So glad to have helped. It is difficult to post photo etc on here. I have a Moyes photo from 1937 that I tried to attach yesterday but it wasn't allowed because of size even though I resized it twice. So I gave up. I'm also not allowed to post my email address in this message. So click on my name and send me a private message with your own email and I will send you the grave plots and any photos I can find. Let me know a brief history of your family in Auchterderran, ie when they lived there and if there are any left still living there. I have 100's of old photos of the ABC parishes and it's people.

Hi Elaine,

Hope the school records helped. I'm sorry but I've mislaid the MI lists. When I find them will have a look for the names mentioned. Also I have an old photograph of a group of men holding a sign that says W.T. Davie in Cardenden. If you know what that is or would like the photo please email me.

Hi Elaine,
I am new on this site and wonder if you have any info on McCall's, Arnott's or Ness families from 1820 to 1900
The McCall's .....James and his father George were gardeners in Falkland.
The Ness family ... Robert and Catherine, parents of Christina, were coach hirers from Glasgow area....
The Arnott's... William and his father Thomas were coal miners from Auchterderran. Mary b 9/4/1897, was my grandmother, and was William and Janet (nee Balfour's) daughter. Mary had a brother, Thomas.
James McCall m Christina Ness 7/11/1890. Their son Archibald was my grandfather. He married Mary Arnott in 1921.
Many thanks if you can help.

Hi Elaine,
I've just joined after seeing your messages on google. Was in Auchterderran last week looking for Penman grave but left frustrated as could not find it! Maybe it has fallen. Would be so delighted to receive plan from you of graveyard (by J.Penman from 1960's). William Penman, wife Margaret Christie, was my gr.gr.grandfather. Any other info containing Penman name from local community gratefully received.
Thankyou, Ilene

Hi Karen
Is it possible there is a wrong surname on the death certificate? These things do happen, especially with an elderly death. Nearest match I can see is the following marrage:-
13/10/1824 COOK JANET JAMES COOK/ELIZABETH ERSKINE FR250 AUCHTERDERRAN /FIFE 405/ 0010 0297
Then there is the birth:-
2 13/10/1824 COOK JANET JAMES COOK/ELIZABETH ERSKINE AUCHTERDERRAN /FIFE 405/ 0020 0007
There is the added "mystery" that marriage and birth are on same date. Worth checking the OPRs.
Any use of "Erskine" as a family second name?
Regards
Dod
-
lol they were my original parents for janet, but would they get both parents names wrong on a certificate, i found janet's father as james on all the differnt web sites but then purchased her certificate to find it a bit different
i don't know where else to turn but am wondering if it's worth getting her marriage certificate in nz 1860.
cheers karen
-
Hi karen
Curiouser and curiouser! Janet's marriage to David Waldie states she is the daughter of the late JAMES Cook, mason, Crossgates in the parish of Dunfermline. There is a marriage record on SP
28/12/1823 COOK JAMES ELIZABETH ERSKINE/ M AUCHTERDERRAN /FIFE 405/ 0020 0073. Something odd - needs follow-up. I'm out of credits for SP at the moment so haven't got any further.

The family seems to have lived there from the 1841 census to 1861. Any help from a family researcher in the Aussie bush would be most appreciated. The Oswald family is also connected and any information about them would also be most helpful. Thank you.
