Could someone please check for me the marriage of James BATTEN to Sarah Bryant 17th April 1817?
I am really stuck establishing his father.

looking at the 51 cencus for your couple it says sarah place of birth downtown.the only sarah bryant baptised in downtown around this time is this one-
sarah bryant bapt 26th jan 1794 parents james and sarah bryant.

I will check it out at the library as they have all the Bmd for downton from 16something to 1837, found a bap date for James 1797 but let you know if I can find parents

The 1851 census shows a James and Sarah Batten living in Morgans Vale Downton, each is 56. He is given as a painter, plumber and glazier.
The place of birth for James is given as Hale, Hampshire. I think this is probably correct. The 1841 states born in county, but the enumerator has partially rubbed out the name James and I suspect he may have been confused by the son James who was born in Downton.

I have checked all of Downton's bap records from1733 to 1839 for a bap for James Batten nothing there.
