Would anyone have information about a Priscilla Lee born about 1850 in Hartlepool. I have her on the 1881 census married to George Thompson living in Stockton but would love to find more information about her.
She was from a Romany family. Married George in 1869 in Thornaby, and I think divorced or was widowed and married someone else, possibly a Maugham/n.
Thanks
Julia

I have had a look at the local births deaths and marriage index - www.teesvalley-indexes.co.uk found a Priscilla Thompson married a Thomas Davis in 1894 registered at Middlesbrough

Well she is still married to George in 1891 plus three more children
Albert 8
John 6
Ethel 4
If you haven't got her first marriage it might be worth it to find her fathers name and occupation
June quarter 1869
George Thompson / Priscilla Lee Stockton 10a 129
She is with George and their first child Jane in 1871

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com
the only marriage that I could find doesn't fit but worth keeping on the back burner
June quarter 1905
William Maughan/ Priscilla Bell Durham 10a 671
which could tie in with
Marr Dec quarter 1894
Priscilla Thompson/Robert Henry Bell
Middlesbro 9d 1094 ..... but can't find her on 1901 census as Priscilla Bell ..... what's new as she should be on census 1851/1861 before her marriage born Hartlepool. I have found one Priscilla Lee b. 1849 :'(but Gravesend Kent FORTUNE TELLER lodging with Avis ( female )age 40 also fortune teller Lucy Lee and Severna Lee all lodging with James Jones master sweep.

Thanks for all your input.
I think I will have to get Priscillas and George Thompsons marriage certificate to see what that says, although, the Priscilla Bell marrying William Maugham does actually sound promising.
I have this family living at 43 Burbank, Hartlepool in 1931,32, 33, 34,35,36/7/8 also living with Priscilla Davis, Thomas Davis, Ethel Gaffney, Amelia Gaffney and Harold Thompson, William Maughan and Priscilla Maughan.
I do know that Ethel Gaffney was definately related to my grandmother, she was Priscllas daughter (from George Thompson) and married Thomas Gaffney.
So all the information that you have all sent does seem to tie together somehow. I will have to dissect it all further.
One thing though, my grandmother remembers going to Priscillas funeral in Hartlepool as a teenager but I have not found any record of her death, primarily I don't know what name she died under, but Hartlepool cemeteries cant find her either. She said it was quite a lavish affair as she was taken in a carriage pulled by horses. This would have been probably between 1937 and 1945. Would there be any articles in the local papers regarding this?
thanks for all your replies

Hi Julia. I’ve just seen your chats regarding Priscilla nee Lee (Thompson/Davis). Just wondering if you’ve got any further with her/need any help. She’s my great, great grandmother. Regards

Hello
Yes, I am still looking for Priscilla. She is my 3rd Great grandmother, and I have been looking for more information for a long time but everything I have found is so disjointed I cant make head nor tale of it.

Whilst Priscilla from 1871 to 1911 states she was bc.1851 Hartlepool, by 1939 she has 'lost' 12 years and states born 1863 (which is impossible as we know). She dies as Priscilla Davis bc.1864, Death reg'd June qtr.1942 Hartlepool.
Found details of her second marriage to Thomas Davis (who I think died 1933) when she states she is Priscilla Thompson, widow, aged 40 (?), daughter of Thomas Lee, labourer (deceased). Was the certificate of her first marriage ever obtained? If so, did this give her father as a Thomas Lee too?
William Maughan was married to Priscilla Gaffney b.1904, (daughter of Thomas and Ethel Gaffney), in 1923 Hartlepool.
An elusive lady who doesn't appear to have existed until her first marriage.

Hi Annette
Yes very elusive. I did find a christening for her, or think it is for her, from Freereg. A long long time ago when the records online were of the pages in the bmd registers, I did find her birth in the records, in 1850 in Hartlepool, and Im sure I printed it out, but I seem to have lost this. (I can see still the page, it was the middle column half way down the page, its so annoying that I cant find it). All the online records now have no trace of this. And yes, she lost years through the years! Now I have contact with Tonia, Im hoping to get it all in order!
CHRISTENING: County Durham
Place Trimdon
Church name St Mary Magdalen
Register type Bishop's Transcripts
Register entry number 673
Baptism date 07 Aug 1850
Person forename Priscilla
Person sex F
Person abode Gateshead
Father forename Thomas
Father surname LEE
Father occupation Basket Maker
Mother forename Louisa

Hi Julia and Annette. I spent quite a lot of this weekend looking at Priscilla but didn't get anywhere. Marriage to George Thompson in 1869 states her age as 18; in 1871 census she is aged 20; in 1881 census she is 31, in 1891 census she is 41. I can't find any other family in 1901 census - have you had any luck? In 1894 (marriage to Thomas Davis) she is aged 40. In 1911 census she is aged 60; on 1939 census her date of birth is 25 July 1863, which would make her 76 years, but means that she was 6 years old when she first got married!!! Her death certificate states 78 years. A puzzler.
I've found quite a lot of interesting info on the Gaffney side if you are interested.
Regards

I have some census data on Priscilla, but not on my PC here. Ive got other details from local registers from Hartlepool too somewhere. My grandma seemed to be in awe of her, so it wouldnt surprise me if she fudged her age on purpose. She also thought she had married the Maughan.
I would love information on the Gaffney side if you have it.
Tonia I wonder if your father knew my grandmother quite well, she was Joan Alderson, b 1927, or even if you knew her?

Suspect since you have been searching a long time that you already have this information but for the sake of this thread I'll post what I think is the family in 1851 at Huddersfield, Yorkshire (although it doesn't help a great deal except to show they had a large number of children):
Thomas Lee 43 Basket Maker (Gypsy's)
L. Lee 43
Thomas Lee 19 Basket Maker
Eve Lee 15
Owen Lee 12
C. Lee (dau.) 9
R. Lee (dau.) 6
J. Lee (son) 9
Abrn. Lee (son) 3
M. Lee (son) 4
P. Lee (dau.) 8 (I think this should be 8 months and is your Priscilla).
Birthplaces for all shown as 'Not Known'!!
Have found what would appear to be baptisms of some children to Thomas and Louisa (an online tree has her maiden name as Wharton/Worten but no source given and they didn't register the births of their children):
Fanny Lee bp.24/2/1828 Newchapel, Staffordshire - Thomas 'traveller' abode Thursfield.
Matilda Lee bp.17/5/1829 Welbury, Yorkshire - Thomas a Basket Maker.
Righteous Lee bp.4/3/1832 Seaton Ross, Yorkshire - Thomas Basket Maker, abode Bridgnorth,
Shropshire
Eve Lee bp.29/1/1836 Embleton, Northumberland
Charity Lee bp.21/5/1839 Wolviston, Durham
Athaziah Lee bp.28/5/1841 Kirkby Overblow, Yorkshire - Robert Basket Maker, abode Newcastle.

Hi Annette. Thanks for all your help. Do you have the Lee family in your tree? I’ve seen the census from 1851 before and there is in fact Whorltons as the family prior to the Lees so could be the right family - just so hard to be sure. I’ve not come across the baptisms you’ve found so I’ll take a look at them.
I’ll let you know if I make any breakthroughs.
Bye for now
-
No, I'm not connected to the Lee family, just trying to help.
I ought to have mentioned that the baptisms I found did show that parents were Thomas and Louisa - I only specified Thomas to show his occupation.

Hi Annette. Thanks for all your help. That’s very kind of you. I’ve had a DNA match on Ancestry who has Righteous Lee in her tree, so that looks promising - thanks again.

I will also look more!
This has been a very exciting week for me :-)
