Hi Paisleyborn
Just checking whether you had seen the 1841 Census entry from FreeCen for the family:
MCDONALD Joseph 50 Mason Ross and Cromarty
MCDONALD Jean 45 Ross and Cromarty
MCDONALD John 8 Ross and Cromarty
MCDONALD Andrew 3 Ross and Cromarty
CORBET Janet 20 Female Servant Ross and Cromarty
Address: Balintore
By the ages of Joseph and Jean, you would think that there had been older children who had already left home by 1841. There are some details of births on IGI, including your Andrew's:
1. ANDREW MC DONALD Birth: 11 FEB 1837 Christening: 10 MAR 1837 Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
2. JANET MC DONALD Birth: 30 MAY 1832 Christening: 13 JUN 1832 Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland (Janet is not showing in 1841, so may have died young?)
There are some other ideas which might be worth you following up:
1. From IGI, I wonder whether this is the birth of a boy Joseph to maybe brother John that you have:
JOSEPH MC DONALD Birth: 04 APR 1849 Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
Parents: Father: JOHN MC DONALD Mother: JESSIE ANDERSON
And the marriage of this John to Jessie also on IGI:
JOHN MACDONALD Marriages: Spouse: JESSIE ANDERSON
Marriage: 12 AUG 1845 Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
These are other children showing for John and Jessie:
1. JAMES MC DONALD Birth: 14 MAY 1851 Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
2. JOHN MACDONALD Birth: 22 MAY 1855 Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
3. JOSEPH MC DONALD Birth: 04 APR 1849 Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
4. ALEXANDER MAC DONALD Birth: 19 OCT 1845 Christening: 27 OCT 1845 Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
5. DAVID MC DONALD Birth: 04 APR 1849 Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
6. JEAN MC DONALD Birth: 21 MAY 1847 Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
If you are going to look at any birth cert, you have an 1855 one there. The first year of official registration in Scotland provided a wealth of additional info for one year only.
2. Have you tried finding Joseph and Jean in the 1851 Census. This would give you an indication of where they were born.
3. The death certs for Joseph and Jean have given you their parents details. Hopefully this will also let you go back. Sometimes further clues re childen's names can be obtained this way.
Regards.

Thank you very much Monicalesl....I hadn't got as far as the 1841
Census...that was a help ta. I had found approx 68 McDonalds in Fearn in1851 index....so had no clue who lived where /with whom.
I think I ran myself ragged at that time and turned my attention to other domestic duties ...shutting the door tight on my pc!!!! :-[
I am aware that Janet Corbet was jean McDonald's own mother's name so presume the 20 year old could have been a relative of hers.
Looks as though there's a lot more McD. research to be done ..thank you for your help and encouragement.

Good luck with your MacDonalds. I spent a year battling with mine in Argyll!

Hi Paisleyborn
I've just realised that on my posts yesterday I've made a silly link between the John aged 8 in the 1841 Census and the John having a child Joseph in 1849. Couldn't possibly be Andrew's brother, he would have been 13 when he married! Ooops!

Hi Monica....don't worry about it......after a year of researching your own branch of the MacDonalds....you are forgiven ....WE are forgiven for " inter-generational confusion " ( IF there is such a phrase???). I would have noticed it myself had I not found a great account of the MCDonalds within their community of Balintore RoC...last night , which I have been reading online this morning . (www.rchs.uhi.ac.uk/communit/p37/ht/hy/DTTS/Cover.html if you or anyone with Ross & Cromarty connections are interested.)
Thanks again Monica...I'm most impressed that you are still considering MY McDonald problems this morning!!!! ;D TA!!

Joseph was my Grandfather and died in a tramcar accident in Canada 1928, John was John Andrew MacDonald who married my grandmothers younger sister Sarah McNab MacDonald, They had four children together before Sarah died, John Andrew Remarried Elizabeth lieshman and had another child Duncan who is still alive and lives in Australia, I have no idea what happened to Margaret and Alice except that Alice was a witness to John Andrew and Sarah's marriage 26TH March 1897 in Barrhead. One of John Andrew and Sarah's sons James was a major in the Royal artillery and a prisoner of war on the Burma railway, He had four children and who all well and live in Hampshire I have a file of births and marriages of both my fathers MacDonald side and my mother Maxwell side of the family. hope this info is of some help to paislyborn should she decide to come back to roots chat, Joemacd
