I'm looking to find out about Martha Gwynne's parents. Martha married William George 20.4.1878 Burton, Pembroke and she is listed on the marriage certificate as being a Servant, residing at "Thurston"? and her father's name is William Gwynne who was a Labourer. It indicates her age is 19 which would give her year of birth as approximately 1859.
I have obtained a birth certificate for a Martha Gwynne born 1859 but it lists her father as Dan Gwynne so obviously not the same one. I can't find any other info on her in order to get a birth certificate.
Can anyone help me locate Martha please?

Hi Grumbles,
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Have you spotted Martha on later census returns to check her birthplace?
I can see a *possible* candidate, born at Llanddewi Velfrey (Narberth registration district). Unfortunately, in 1861 (RG9/ 4149 62 15) her mother Mary is down as married but there's no father at home.
By 1871, 4 children are together as 'daughter to head' (or son to head) but parents are away altogether :-\

Stop press, I'm on a different trail now.
Is she the one who gives Rosemarket as her birthplace on later census returns?
If so, I can see this in 1861
Haverfordwest Rosemarket (Registration district Pembroke)
RG9/4159 80 8
W Gwynne, head, 33, Labourer, b. Pembrokeshire St Ishmaels
Mary, wife, 36, b. Rosemarket
Henry, son, 5, scholar, b. do.
Martha, dau, 2, b. do.
I agree this is not much help as far as her birth is concerned ::)

Thanks for the welcome.
Yes, on the 1901 Census she is listed as "Margaret" but this is an error, her birthplace as Pembroke Dock.
In the 1881 and 1891 Census she is listed as Martha and birthplace Rosemarket, Pembroke.
However, that's where I lose her. I can't find a Martha born in Rosemarket in the 1861 and 1871 Census. The birth certificate I did obtain was for:
Martha Gwynne b.9.2.1859 Llandewy Velfrey, Narberth
This lists her father as Dan (occupation Mason Master) mother Mary (nee John).
I don't know if William Gwynne was alive at the time of Martha's marriage.
Can you shed any more light on it?
Thanks

What do you think of the above 1861 census?
Are there any Gwynne witnesses at the marriage?

Thanks for the info on the 1861 Census. Have tried looking at it but still can't get anything to come up????? Looks promising though.
No, unfortunately there were no Gwynne witnesses.

If the above are the ones, then I think these are the ones in 1881:

and going back to 1871, it gets interesting ::)
1871
RG10/5521 96 19
Rosemarket, Pembrokeshire
William G Thomas, head, 39, Ag lab, b. St Ishmaels
Mary G Thomas, wife, 35, b. Rosemarket
Martha G Thomas, dau, 12, scholar, b. do.
Evan G Thomas, son, 9, b. do.
Isabella G Thomas, dau, 2, scholar, b. do.
Jane G Thomas, dau, 6, scholar
Was hoping to see a birth registration for a Martha Gwynne Thomas in 1859 but I can't :P

Just in case - there is a marriage
William Gwynne to possibly Mary Lewis in Haverfordwest Sep 1855
(pure fantasy, perhaps - I can't see a matching Mary Lewis)

Just for the record, the family are called Gwynne Thomas in 1891.
RG12/4532 27 6

I don't know if this helps but I have family living at Thurston at that time.
Also a William George son of Henry and Ann George(Brown) whose wife was Martha.
