Title: Dudley Pubs in 1851
Post by: mezentia on Friday 01 September 06 07:40 BST (UK)
Does anyone know the name of the pub kept by Alexander Patterson in the High Street, Dudley in 1851? He's on the census at HO107 Piece 2032 Folio 210 Page 12 as an inn Keeper, and I'm assuming he lived on the premises.

I don't know  :(
If you have Ancestry you could try looking at the Enumerator's description. Sometimes that gives  a clue as to where households are even though there are no house numbers a such.
The 1861 doesn't help much either does it? Still on the High Street though. East side of the High Street, between Hall Street and the Dudley and West Bromwich Bank.

I've tried the enumerators descriptions, but without any success. Could he be in a Kelly's directory?

Hi David

In Bentleys Directory - no date but appears to be early 1840's -Alexander Patterson was a "victualler etc Swan Inn, High Street".

You can also find him elsewhere in Dudley in the 1850's by searching on the keywords "Patterson Alexander" at www.historicaldirectories.org

Was the pub still there? Did you find anything else out about it?
