Wondering if anyone can help me find a George and Catherine SHERLOCK family that were living in Victoria, Australia around the mid 1800s.
George was born about 1819 and died 21.7.1850 (poss in Sth Australia) and Catherine.. well I have nothing on her.
They had a daughter Mary Ann born 14.11.1843 in Melbourne, Vic and I think christened 3.12.1843 St. James, Melbourne, Vic. The family moved to South Australia when she was 7yo. Mary ann married Samuel HARVEY in Black Springs, SA in 1863 and died in Yacka, SA in 1928.
Over the years the surname became recorded as SHEERLOCK, but it definitely is SHERLOCK on Mary Ann's marriage certificate.
I have no idea where these SHERLOCKs came from and whether there were any other branches out there across Aus as I only have Mary Ann's info as a child of George and Catherine..noone else.
Can anyone throw some light on this? Have spoken with Chrissy but no luck there (Thanks Chrissy!) and she suggested I post a message..here it is!
Thanks in advance!

Hi jocer
The NSW indexes have Mary A SHERLOCK being born in 1843 but they also have a William SHEERLOCK being born in 1845. Ref: V18453734 30A/1845.
Also the marriage of George SHEERLOCK & Catherine HYDE at St James Melbourne Ref: V1843747 27C/1843
Early Victorian Church records are often in the NSW indexes as well.
St James is one of the very Early churches in Melbourne, It was moved from it's original position brick by brick to it's current position on King St.

Hi Jo,
There is a George Sheerlock listed on the BISA (Biographical Index of South Australians) who married Catherine Margaret (nee) Stewart. George was born c1819 in England and died 21/7/1850 in Little Para, S.A. ...Arrival into Australia was c1846.
Occ: Farmer, Tanner and Carter and others
Res:Little Para and Religion was C/E.
Catherine was born 1820 in Scotland and died Rem Ws Holmes.
Children: Maryann, William and George and dau.
William was born in Victoria and George in S.A.
Surname for all is spelt Sheerlock and the only Sherlock recorded is for a Matthew who arrived S.A. in 1857 aboard 'Europa.'
Hope this helps,
Magoo

Hi Jo,
My guess is that it is a typing error and prob. should read....'Died Res Wm Holmes'....meaning, died at the residence of William Holmes.

Hi Sue
This may have happened because you looking at a burial index and not a death index. If the children recorded the death at the cemetery and not the 3rd husband, they may only recorded her as Sheerlock.
Some of the Vic death indexes record both names (ie. 2 entries) first married name and 2nd married name.

OK'
I see what Genni is pointing out now I think, about why not named Holmes..
Death registrations are not the same as BURIAL registrations. Obviously taken from quite different sources. So, although the burial says SHEERLOCK, the death says HOLMES.
This fact/discrepancy shows again in the wierd spelling of JENN'S George [death] and the more accurate in the burial entry.
Slowly getting it together it seems!

Hi
May as well pop this one in for good measure!
At Whyte Yarcowie Cemetery...
Steele, George Sherlock, d, 3/8/1885. Aged 1 week [loc.Section 2 Row 7]
Steele, Theresa b.1820, d. 1880. Aged 65 [loc. Section 2, Row 7]
Don't know where they fit.

Wow! Have wondered before where the STEELE's fit in as I had found Andrew William Steele SHEERLOCK before in the National Archives, mother - Mary, and I assume later his wife - Ellen, as next of kins.
Not sure about the last post with the STEELE/SHEERLOCK cross overs.. but another challenge!! Whyte Yarcowie Cemetery is 'around' the area of my original Mary Ann HARVEY (nee SHEERLOCK) in Yacka SA, so it stands to reason or possibility that they are all connected.. now to prove the links.
I went to Murray Bridge Cemetery on the w/end to see the SHEERLOCK graves there and it seems to fit that this William SHEERLOCK was my Mary Ann's brother, with his wife Mary (nee STEELE) beside him. Not much info was on the headstone, just the years:
SHEERLOCK
In Loving Memory of our parents
Mary 1856-1920 William 1845-1933
At rest
Will keep digging! Especially the HYDE possibility in Victoria. Thanks to everyone!
Kind Regards, Jo

Well I had to read that a couple of times over to get it straight!! Thanks so much for all your help!
I'm sure they whacked in the Sherlock just to mess with our heads.. borrowed from an in law name indeed! Highest form of compliment I'm sure though.
This is my first real enquiry post and I'm just so impressed with everyone's help. What a fantastic site!

Hello there
I have adjusted my post to correct my mistake of the children to George and William married to Mary Steele
I had written down correctly when I checked by transcribed it all as to one marriage.
It is intersting to note that when Mary Sheerlock nee Steele married the brother she used her maiden name and put down single on the marriage details!!!!
on three on the children's births details mothers name is Mary (fmly) Sheerlock (nee) Steele
Maybe any RCer with a lot more knowledge than myself will be able to say why this is

John Steele married Harriet Ada Thyer in Yarcowie and then went on run a hotel in Whyte YArcowie for a number of years. He moved to Adelaide and took up the lease on the Bucks Head Hotel. I have more info on this line if it helps let me know

Hello
I know this thread has been inactive for a long time but I'm trying to get in touch with the original poster are anyone else who is related to Sheerlocks from South Australia. I am related to them by marriage - Mary Clair Sheerlock was my Great Aunt. She was born in Cockburn and her parents were William Sheerlock and Mary Steele.
I am in England (Mary married into an English family) and so finding it quite hard to research this family although this thread and Ancestry has given me a good start.
Would love to exchange info
