Title: HELSDOWN births in Hastings lookup please
Post by: anniehelsdown on Tuesday 29 August 06 11:01 BST (UK)
Hi
My hubby's grandfather Arthur (1896) was the son of William Helsdown (1871) and Sarah (1874).
I cannot find any other births for this couple and im spending a fortune sending off for birth certs for possible siblings for Arthur!
They married in in 1895 in Hastings and lived in Hastings all their lives. Is there any online database where i can search or anyone who has access to a database and has the time to look for me?
I cannot get to Hastings myself or i would.
Kind regards

be wary of mistranscriptions (given the history !  :D)

this site is fully indexed allegedly 1866 - 1920, and you can search with wildcards (% I think ...)

www.familyrelatives.org

It is Pay to View, but apart from the indexing has other useful search features ...

Hi
Thankyou. I have garbled my message i think. (Not surprising with the history of this surname, im going mad here! :)
I know Arthur's parents are William and Sarah, i am trying to ascertain whether Arthur was their only child. I cannot find any siblings for Arthur.
Many thanks for looking up the marriage though and i am sorry to mislead.

Hi Scropper again,
You come to the rescue yet again, i dont know what id do without you!
Ill try it now, even if it pay to view its got to be cheaper than collecting birth certs of every Helsdown born in that era!
My bank balance thanks you  :))

remember that 'less is more' ..... dont restrict the search to the actual HASTINGS REgn district, but read the notes on searching with 'wildcards' ....

Good hunting !

Thanks again Scropper.
They stayed in Hastings all their life though.
Ive just had a look but doesnt seem to be a way to find the parents of the child so although there are 4 children born around that time, i cant find their parents. One of them (Robert 1901) is yet another birth certificate i have ordered and am awaiting.
Is there a way of linking the parentson the site that i have missed?
Sorry to be a pain  :-[

sadly, you wont see mothers maiden name until late 1911 onward - otherwise its another Cert to purchase !

Its just an index ....

You can make the Cert order conditional on parents names, then you only get charged £3.00 (£7.00 but you get a refund)

I suggested broader than Hastings itself in case a birth was elsewhere in Sussex - with relations sometimes ?

Cheers !

Hello Annie

I'm not sure if you know this - but there is an Arthur Helsdown in Hastings Cemetry. He died at sea in 1949 with skipper Harry Muggridge, both middleaged, 49 & 54 respectivey. The lifeboat could not reach them in the fog. There is a short account in Hastings Chronicle (google on this), and the editor,  local historian Steve Peak might know more, but perhaps you know all this. The small stone is by the corner of a path below the lower white angel.

Very best wishes for your search
