Title: EVANS, Bedminster - maiden name
Post by: Abby on Monday 28 August 06 03:13 BST (UK)
I have just received a copy of Francis Joseph Evans birth certificate (my g.grandfather).  His birth date is 8 May 1842 and his father's occupation given as yeoman.

His parents are listed as Joseph Evans and Ann Evans (formerly Sprod(?)).  Could someone please confirm this as a possible surname or am I reading it wrongly?  Ann registered his birth and gave her address as (looks like) Parton's (Parson's) Street, Bedminster.

Many thanks,
Abby

Hi Abby

I've just taken a look at the 1841 census and over two dozen individuals with the surname SPROD were listed as living in Gloucershire and Somerset.

The spelling of the maiden name on the certificate could well be accurate.

Thank you Pritch - I had never heard the name before.  Osprey was really kind and provided me with what looks like Francis's family in the 1841 census in Parson St.

Ann is 35 but being the '41 census, no birth district is given.  A possible sighting of her with possible family, in the 1871 census gives birthplace as Barrow, Somerset, so I'm wondering if the Somerset Sprods are around the Barrow area?  I have my Road Atlas of Britain out and Barrow looks very small.

This site is just amazing.  From New Zealand it can be frustrating as we feel so far away, so to have people interested in our research and being generous with their help is incredible.

Many thanks,
Abby

Hi Abby

Two families are recorded in Somerset in the 1841 census.  Not in Barrow I'm afraid, but not too far away either.  One family is in the town of Yatton and the other in the village of Kenn.  Here are the details, they may prove helpful:

HO107/968/12  f27  p5  Yatton

Samuel Sprod  50  Plumber & Glazier
Mary Sprod  50
Ann Sprod  21
Henry Sprod  19
William Sprod 13
Eliza Sprod  11

All born in county

HO107/967/15  f9  p13  Kenn

Thomas Sprod  35   ????? Chandler  (occupation difficult to read)
Sarah Sprod  35
William Sprod  11
Sarah Sprod  7
Edward Sprod  5
Mary Sprod  4
Robert Sprod  2

All born in county

Many thanks Pritch - very helpful.  Yatton and Kenn are really close to each other so we can suppose these two are connected - perhaps Samuel and Thomas are brothers?

I have searched the rootschat site and no other Sprods are mentioned, so not exactly a common name....

If Ann was 35 in 1841 she may be another sibling, so something to work on indeed!

Thanks heaps,
Abby

Hi Abby

SPROD is a great name to search for!! Try this link to the Clevedon Civic Society - lots of SPROD names in their records, covering the nearby villages inc Yatton/Kenn/Kingston Seymour etc

Thanks Marquees - I have bookmarked the site for the future!  I have a feeling there are not too many Sprods around, so chances are some of them are probably related.

In the mean time, I only know of one and she happens to be my g.g.grandmother!

Many thanks,
Abby!

Hi Abby,
Ann Sprod was baptised in Barrow Gurney 13 Sept 1805. It does seem to be a fairly common name in that area.

Hi Abby,
Francis Joseph Evans and Mary-Anne (Annie) Evans are also my Great Grand Parents. My Father was their Grandson. I have family trees for the rest of my families but not the Evans'. Have read your posts with interest and I am wondering how much further you have got. Would love to chat

Hi Porgy,
My husband's g g grandmother was Julia Evans sister of Joseph Evans, Francis Joseph's father. Francis was the 9th of 10 children and for reasons unknown he lived with his uncle, Moses Rennolds Evans. I didn't know of his existence until I read Abby's post several years ago. I have quite a bit of info on the Evans and Sprod families if you are interested.

Regards Susan

Ok, thanks for the information. i only found this site by doing a general google search, never expecting to find anything. Still can't believe that I have as I would have thought that Francis Joseph Evans was a relatively common name!! Anyway here I am about to make a discovery
