Title: Skelton& Ewbank
Post by: Lazarus on Sunday 27 August 06 02:06 BST (UK)
I am trying to find the parents of Anne Skelton bC1798.
She married C1826 in County Antrim.
However I have found a marriage Coxwold of Robert Skelton to Susannah Ewbank who had a family of 10 children late 1700s early 1800s.
Unfortunately Anne bC1798 is correct time scale but Robert and Anne have a daughter Anne b1786 already accounted for.

The Skelton /Ewbank connection fits but cannot establish that my Anne belongs to this family.

I have a William Skelton Ewbank Charters from County Antrim who came to Australia.

I would greatly appreciate help in solving this mystery.

Just a thought...( two cents worth? )
Hanna, Anna and Anne considered interchangeable...could she perhaps have been the Hannah? J.J.

Thank you JJ
I have considered the possibility. This is a long standing problem.
It seems too much of a co-incidence that the names Skelton and Ewbank should connect to my Charters family.I need to find the parents of Anne Skelton. Not necessarily Coxwolds.Could be Ireland.

Skelton and Ewbank The Coxwold marriage is not the only one. George Ewbank of York 1711-Jan 1787, droggist and banker, married Elizabeth Skelton of York whose father William Skelton was lord mayor. They married in October 1737 at St Olave York and she died in December 1755. Robin Ewbank, Hampshire, England

Good morning New Rooter.Welcome to RootsChat.
You have probably noticed that I am researching my Charters family. My grandmother was a Charters.
Her father was Clarence Hooper Charters and his brother William Skelton Ewbank (Melbourne) Charters.
I am trying to determine the Skelton and Ewbank connection.
The father of Clarence and William was James Charters 1794-1861 who I understand was an army captain and farmer. He married Ann Skelton 1798-1871,probably in County Antrim.
They lived "Glendona" Gobrana and a both buried Muckamore Cemetery.
If he had been serving overseas it is possible he met and married Anne Skelton possibly in England. The Ewbank/Skelton marriage may be a positive lead. Can you please tell me more?

I have never researched the Skeltons. I suspect that William of York may be one and the same as or very closely related to William and Barbara Skelton of Aislaby, Middleton, Yorks, as our family later had many connections with Aislaby, Middleton. George Ewbank's son Andrew was curate and met his wife there. William Skelton of Aislaby has a will dated 18 Jan 1737 and proved 28.Jan 1747. Robin Ewbank

generations past the ones you need, but could be descendants/connections to same ancestors you seek, so...

Robert Ewbank Skelton christened March 14 1867
Kirby Misperton ,  York / parents George Skelton & Mary

William Ewbank Skelton christened June 17 1868
St Michael's, New Malton, York / parents John Skelton & Harriet

There is a retired vet living in Angmering, Sussex, called William Ewbank Skelton who is a grandson of the 1868 William Ewbank Skelton from Malton. He believes that it is the Coxwold connection rather than the York one in his line. I spoke to him a few months ago. Robin

The male children of Robert Skelton and Susannah Ewbank were William born 21.3.1790 and baptised at Coxwold on 31st March same year, Robert b 1.1.1794 and baptised at Coxwold on 22nd January same year. Robert died at Malton in 1866 and was an agricultural labourer. He had a large family. The third boy was George Skelton b 3.7.1806 and baptised at Coxwold on 14th July 1806. The Ewbank Skeltons of the Malton area are almost certainly grandchildren or great grandchildren of one or more of these three boys. (There were also seven girl siblings). Robin

I have found William Ewbank Skelton 1868 Malton. He was son of John Skelton b Marton and baptised Sinnington 19.9.1830 and Hannah Walker (1837-1907). John was son of Robert Skelton (details in my last posting) who married Elizabeth Clarke (1799-1874). For completion of this loop William Ewbank Skelton (actually registered as William Hewbank Skelton) married Emma Massey in Malton first quarter of 1892. Their grandson is the William Ewbank Skelton of Angmering Sussex. Robin

Thank you New Rooter.
I am reconstructing the data you have kindly provided and will attempt to fit this to what I already know.
Much appreciated.

Robert Ewbank Skelton 1867 was also a grandson of Robert Skelton. His father George was born Marton and baptised Sinnington 26.1.1834. So the two Ewbank Skeltons of the 1860s were first cousins. Susannah Ewbank must have been quite a formidable influence on family lore to have kept the influence of her name so long! Her family incidentally is a very large branch of my Ewbank family. Hello Robin
I need to unravel a lot of the data I have.I may need to work on it tomorrow my time.
I have a copy of the Will of William Skelton of Yearsley signed Jul 1780.
In it he makes a bequest to his oldest daughter Ann Skelton of Malton. He also speaks of his daughter Barbara Skelton.
He also makes a bequest to his loving wife Barbara Skelton and his son Robert Skelton who were joint executors.
I have William Skelton living 1715-1780.He married 17 Jan 1758 Coxwold Barbara Swales 1722-1799.
I believe that it was their son Robert Skelton who married 1785 Coxwold,Susanna Ewbank.I need to verify this.
Unless I am mistaken, it was Robert and Susannah who had 10 children including Anne b1786 who may have married a Charters.I am uncertain about this.
The Ann (Skelton) Charters I am looking for was born 1798 and died 1871 aged 73.
Ann (Skelton) Charters and James Charters are both buried in a large Charters family grave at Muckamore.
I think it possible I could be missing a generation unless there was a second marriage.
Please note this line starts back in the 1700s.
Thanks for your help.

The Coxwold family is the only connection found so far close enough to the birth of Anne that might produce more Skelton, although not unusual for a previous Skelton/Ewbank relationship to come back around to a Skelton relationship later in the century...... Just pointing out that these 2 families were traditional in using the ancestor's surnames in their family's names as well... Lazarus, you had said the Anne was accounted for from this couple... has anyone found the Hannah accounted for in later marriage/census ? Although age doesn't fit...

Ah just saw there was a page 2, so Lazarus, the other Anne wasn't accounted for after all?

My information on Anne 1786 is limited. She was the oldest child and born 19th April 1786 at Yearsley and baptised Coxwold on 28th April. I do not have her marriage detail. If the first Anne  died there is of course possible potential room for a second Anne 1798 but no obvious evidence to her existence, which would be strange as the others are all well documented. Mary was born 6.4.1797 and Hannah 29.12.1802. I have birth and baptism details of the ten children as it is. Robin

Found your reference to the will of William Skelton - I have been looking for the origins of William for many years and although I have much information on the descendants of William's son Robert and Susanna Ewbank - the origin of William before his marriage to Barbara Swales in 1758 is something of a mystery - I wonder if you could post a fuller transcript of the will - or even better point me in the direction of obtaining a copy - your DOB is different to the one I have been working with (1722) - so even that has bee an aid - hope you see this as this topic seems to be quite an old one - len

Good morning Marshallen
Very early morning here so this is just to let you know I have read your message.I do need to revisit the papers I have on this topic in order that I have a better recollection of  it all.
Are you aware that you need to make one more posting to this site before you can activate the PM system.
Once this is done,we can exchange email addresses.
I have made an attempt at transcribing the original Will document but there are some gaps.Perhaps I should make a further attempt.
The document I have appears to be dated 15 Jul 1780,slightly smudged and a challenge to interpret.
I will try and come up with something later.
