Can any one help in finding Violet's roots. Her parents were George Riggs and Jean Beggrie. Surname of mother may have variants. Violet was baptised in St Cuthberts Edinburgh Jan 1834. Can't read entry but they may have lived in Richmond Street. I think George worked as a shoe????. Thank you in advance. Good luck to all in their searches.

Somehow I felt the further back I went the harder the searches would be. Not with people like you around. You have really made me so happy. Go raibh mile maith agat. (1000 thank yous) I notice Jean is not there. Perhaps she has died. I do have printouts of deaths for a Jean Riggs (Beggrie) but have not gone done them as yet. Violet Riggs is my grt grandmother. I will lokk on Scots People. Again thank you. If ever I can help you just ask. I owe you big time.

It's the TRON Church.

Violet and George were my great great grandparents. Their daughter Mary Hannan, my great grandmother, was born somewhere in the USA, I can't find her. She married William McKeown in 1890 in Belfast.
I know Violet was first married to Bernard McGill who died (1863)? and then married George Hannan from Drumsough, Antrim in 1877. (They married in Glasgow.) Mary Hannan must have been born approx 1870 +/- ??? Not a daughter of Bernard McGill but was she Georges daughter either?
George died in 1899 and Violet died in Antrim in 1909.

Thanks for the extra information. I have been trying to find reference to Mary McKeown in the 1901 and 1911 census but to no avail. I found her son Hugh with Violet in 1901. Do you know if they were in Ireland at time of either census? thanks.
-
They were in both the 1901 and 1911 census but were listed in Irish. Had you any luck with Mary's birth cert?
I'm totally lost on the interesting Violet, can't figure out her comings and goings. Hugh born in Scotland, Mary in America and Annie born in Antrim, were there others etc?
-
Have you information on the Hannan's. I'm looking for George, his parents etc.
I should likely be asking you this question under the topic Hannan instead of here, but....

Unfortunately Violet had died before the census revealing how many children she had.Mary was named for probate in her mother's will. Have you a copy of that will to see the names of her children? I am still hoping that Catherine born Uk is a sister of Mary and Annie. Did Mary have any other Christian names? The start of this thread has info on George.

This is the 1901 census for the Mac Eoighans which might be of interest to you. Have you seen Violet and George's marriage cert from Glasgow, 1877. Mary Mc Keown married in Jan 1890 so she had to be born before George and Violet married. And if Cathrine is older than Mary.... and I wonder whatever happened to Hugh (Mc)Gill from Violet's 1st marriage in Glasgow in 1862?
-
This might help with confirming some of the info you have both found. From the US 1870 census at Troy Ward 6, Rensselaer, New York:
George Hannon 31 labourer b. Ireland
Violet Hannon 31 b. Scotland
Hugh Hannon 7 b. Scotland
Catharine Hannon 2 b. England

Many thanks for the extra help. I found another child of Violet and Bernard's relationship.. Bridget MeGill b26 February 1863 Rutherglen, Lanark. This was the same year as the death of Bernard. I have yet to find any other info on Bridget. This info was found on Family Search.
-
I think Bridget may have died as a baby - there is a death entry showing in Rutherglen for a Bridget MeGill, mother's surname Riggs, in 1863 (b. 1863).
