Title: Buffalo Bill's travelling Circus?
Post by: Ronin on Tuesday 22 August 06 11:13 BST (UK)
Hello all,

I have found a relative "Ellen Lavina Whitehouse" christened 22/02/1860 in Birmingham who married a "Robert Arthur Carter" who was Canadian.  We guess the marriage happened in Canada as their first born "Treasel Carter" is shown as being born in Toronto in Canada in 1885/6.  So perhaps she had a job out there or moved very temporarily.

She had a further son "Ralph Harold Carter" born in England 1887 (Perhaps she came back pregnant without him?).

Now the intrigue...

Apparently Robert Arthur Carter was some kind of artist(!) (Family folklore)

and

At some point Ellen Lavina Whitehouse may have worked in a travelling rodeo circus (Cody's?) which might have explained her travel?

Any guidance, help or indeed thoughts greatly appreciated - especially any guidance on where to find information on Cody's circus....

Hi Ronin,

Cody established his wild west show in 1882 and after touring the states he then toured europe being in London in 1887. If you google "cody's wild west show" it will produce many sites that deal with this frontiersman/hunter/showman.

Have you aquired the birth certificate of Ralph Harold Carter as this should give the occupation of the father and may well have the name of the touring company that he was with at that time if you are lucky.

This was a BBC site that traced some descendants of the Circus people that were in Manchester with Buffalo Bill Cody's Circus.

There was a big discussion on RootsChat about the Salford (Manchester) Sioux.
Buffalo Bill got some mentions there too.

Might be worth having a look, to see if it helps:

Hi Tazzie,

2 years but still digging!!

Thanks for this info, I am trying to use old family news for the "Artist" bit!  Am wondering if it should have an "e" on the end...

I think that there is a book about Cody's circus written by a Mr Carter but am unable to get a reply from him - I will not give up...

Thanks
