Hi
I have been rooting around my old photos and thought how nice it would be to see an aray of wedding photos showing how they havechanged over the years.
I was at my cousins a few weeks ago and her husband found in the attic of an elderly relative some cine film C1930 of his mum and dads wedding which he had put onto DVD.... it is fabulous!
These photos are of my great uncle Ted Ingram 1911 Australia and my mum and dad 1953
-
What beautiful photos.
You are so lucky 8)
-
I am also interested in how weddings have changed over the years...for example when did the tradition of a white dress come in,is it true that brides married in red or black? ???
-

;D

Please see photo to the left! Grandma and granddad married in 1911. I don't know what colour the outfits were, but I do have the ostrich feather that Beattie wore. It is now brown. Unfortunately, I can't remember the story as to whether it was dyed afterwards.

Hi
Great link Red thanks for that.
Sallysmum unfortunately I can't see your piccie and some others (have had this problem since I upgraded my antivirus!! although I can see Dawnwas's hamster ..how odd)
How great it is you have something from their wedding though, I wonder if the feether was brown at the time.
Would love to see some more wedding photos (old and not so so ..... how about some piccies of RCs???? )

Hi Cal
Thought I would attach it to see if you can see it within the text. It is interesting to note that this wedding also took place in 1911, the same as your Uncle Ted's. My grandmother looks very formal in a suit whereas your great aunt is in a dress. Is this a difference in class? I have only just started researching and I'm trying to ascertain the social standing of my grandmother's family or it could be fashion. Your uncle married in Australia? Grandma was married in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Sallysmum
PS the cine film must have been wonderful and so unusual for the time!
-
Hi,
My gran was married 1911 and l had no idea of how they dressed in that time. Your pic was of great interest. Funny doing the family tree now and all have passed on l found that they married on the same date as myself. My 3 x grandmother married the same date as my second wedding. Also alot of the birthdays are the same as my family.

Hi
I am not sure about the class differences maybe it was fashionable in the UK to wear formal dress or I was thinking maybe it was the type of wedding they had. My gran and Grandad married at her home in Edinburgh I suspect she may not have worn a fancy dress as it was not a church wedding. I have nothing to support this theory it is just my thoughts. But what I did notice is that both of the grooms outfits are so similar
As I have no other photos of early family weddings I was going to surf to see if I could find similar fashions of the times my ancestors were married

Hi Jean
How spooky the same wedding dates
I have a few birthdays that match but what struck me the most in my tree is my name (Caroline)..... it was my g grandmother, her mother, her mother in law and 3 sister in laws names going back to 1811................ my parents didn't know this, they found out after about my g grandmother but that was all

A few years ago our local church held an open day.
They asked brides who married in the church to loan their dresses for a display in the church. Some were over 50 years old. Fascinating.
-
Hi Cal,
Its really funny what we find when doing genealogy. My mom was Lillian May my gran Elsie May and my ex mother in law Elizabeth May and yes all born in May. Mom's maiden name was Graham and my first husbands given name was Graham so we all had a good laugh. l was born August thank goodness mom didn't call me Augustine/a.

I thought it was just me! I mentioned to Dad the other day about how the same dates keep cropping up.
-
Thanks for the link redspookshunter!
I am off to have a more detailed look.
My Mum and Dad got marrried right after the war.Dad had been a bevan boy down the coalmines and did not get a demob suit,so mom gave her clothes coupons to him.She looked lovely in a suit and hat but I think always regretted that she never had the full wedding dress :'(
-
Sallysmum, Your Gran looks very young. do you know how old she was?
-
oo pick me
this is my nan and grandad's wedding, 18/10/1947
-
Gosh, I bet Beattie is blushing! Beattie was 24 and Albert was 25 when they married. Tis funny you should say that she looked so young. She was 32 when she had my mum, then mum had me when she was 45, which in turn, when I came along, Beattie was 76, so she was always very old in my eyes. Indeed as I look at pictures of her now, she was very wrinkly (said with much love and no disrespect intended) It takes someone else's prospective to look at people in a different light. Thankyou - my grandmother was young once!

Hi all,
Cal - great idea to start this thread, I will have to scan a bunch of pics to put on here! :)
sallysmum - I don't think it was a class thing what they wore especially by 1911 or so...your grandparents are probably in their going-away clothes rather than their wedding clothes. I know that couples often had a "wedding" photo taken weeks or months after the wedding - my grandparents did (although nana still wore her wedding dress for that occasion!)
Everyone else - beautiful pics! :D :D :D Thank you all for sharing!

I agree the photos are fabulous and so set the scene for the era in which they were taken. They are great to see ;D
Just found this one taken in North Wales I think it is my mums Cousin Nell with her uncle Robert giving her away. Not sure of the date poss C1930. Was struck by the crowd that had gathered behind them though!
Must see if I can find out more about the wedding !!

Well here is the first I've managed to dig out...my mum (at left) and her sister were the flowergirls for their dad's cousin's wedding. This would have been in about 1939/40, in Sydney.
-
Wow Prue
I tell you I could recognise your mum straight away
Cuz x
-
You might have seen these before, but they are on the other weddings thread which is Totally off Topic, so I'm bringing them over here.
First, the wedding of my Uncle Ernest and Aunt Nellie.
The bridesmaid on the left is my cousin Joan, who not many months later died of meningitis.
-
Mother and Father, Jess and Joe.
Mother is wearing a lovely Tudor Cap edged with wax orange blossom.
During the war years the cap and veil was loaned out many times, and suffered for it.
-
Many years later, the orange blossom was painstakingly unpicked from what remained and turned into a coronet...
-
Aunt Win getting married to William McKay. Far left Emily Baker her gran, far right, Sarah, her mum and my gran.
-
Lastly, from the other side of the family, the dearly beloved's Aunt Doll getting married.
Far left her sister Grace, later to become my mum in law, and far right their mother Minnie.
-
There is a wonderful collection of wedding photographs here, with many styles of wedding dresses. I have one I can add to the collection from 1941 - my parents - and the dress is still in the family's possession.

My godparents; never seen so many bridesmaids!
Nanny Jan

This is my great Uncle Hugh getting married. The young boy in shorts on the left is my Dad, behind him in the dark coat is his Granny. Grandfather is on the far right.

Oh Cal, what a lovely topic! I have been collecting wedding photos of all the brides across the generations, but this is my favourite. Some of you may recall it from the restoration boards. When I originally posted it, there was a chink missing from the bottom right hand corner, so my Great Grandma Ellen's legs had vanished!! Thanks to the wonderful restorers, here's the improved version.
It's my Nan & her first husband, Billy payne, who sadly died 18 months later. The wedding was in 1929 Southampton.
-
Sorry restorers!!! I just realised there's a much clearer copy but I don't want to mess around & change it again!!!
-
Hi Debbie
I am so glad I started this thread.
The photos on here are wonderful and I always think it is great to see people happy on their special day (I know many probably didn't end up happy later on :-\ ) also to see family generations together.
The changes in style are fab too
PaulaToo how great is that the the orange blossom was unpicked and recycled later :)
I must have a root around for some more of mine and get them scanned

Here is the wedding photo of my gg..grandmother and father taken in Saint Helena in 1867.
My gg..grandfather John Graham was in the Royal Artillery and was stationed on the island where he met his wife Anne Elizabeth Ward....she was only 17 years old when they married.
It was the photo that started the Our Ancestors topic and is one of my favourites.
Hope everyone enjoys viewing it.

Well, I'll trot this one out again! The man standing on the far left (wearing a cap) is my grandfather. The bride was his sister. The older couple on the right are my great-grandparents, and all but one of their 10 children appear in the photo. Seated left front, looking as if her hat has alighted on her head by accident, is my grandma. The baby on her lap is her eldest son, my uncle. How about that outfit for the last word in babywear!
The wedding was Dec. 1902
ps great-grandma on here appears as a young woman in my avatar

This thread has been buried too long.
Are there any more weddings out there?

thought I'd add this
its my husbands Aunt in 1933 Fulham ,he the groom left her not long after and nobody knows what happened to him........

Lovely, eeyores4me.
These wedding photos are a great dating resource. The brides dress can be confusing, but the grooms and guests are usually new, and if we are lucky, we know what the date is.

a bit off topic but my wedding cake made and decorated by mother in law to be
we only cut the bottom layer but when we came back from Honeymoon somebody had stolen the other two ????
-
That was a shame
Cakes not weddings
Someone stole the rest of a cake I had for my mothers funeral
Well I don't know if they did but it disappeared
To this day we don't know where it went
It was her Xmas cake and I had not got the almond paste on or icing when she died so i just took the cake up to have with the tea
( in those days tea was in the house now its in the pub )so that was another story about a lost cake
Elizabeth I was off to bed am now goodnight

This photo is of my grandfather's sisters son's (is that 2nd cousins?) wedding in America in the 50s ...

He is your first cousin once removed.
Common ancestor is your great grandfather who was his grand father.
Count the "g"s to each of you
G Grand father is two Gs for you
Grandfather is one G for him.
Smallest number is one G and so first cousin.
Difference is one G (two minus one) and so once removed.

Cal243,
Yes, I'm enjoying this thread too.
I obviously didn't make my caption very clear, apologies.
Here are another couple of pics that have been adapted by the wonderful restorers here on RC.
The first, my mother and grandmother.
The second, a great result, putting my mother, grandmother and my father together as if by magic. Again thanks to RC restorers.

Here's another thread, is any of our new members would like to add weddings to it...
-
I'm not a new member....but I'll add this one......it turned up last year at my Mum's....when asked about it she told me that it was my grandmother's sister's wedding in 1929.
"And" said my mother, "the little girl on the left is me."
It's a wonder you didn't all hear my shouts of joy.....it was the first photograph on my mother as a child....the earliest we'd ever seen was one taken on her 21st birthday.
Two very kind Rootschatters have taken my mother out of the group photograph and I now have a restored and coloured delightful individual photograph of my darling Mum.
A very happy Dee :D

Hi Cal,
I've found Roots a wonderful help with my family photos. At one time I directed a new found cousin in 'far away places' to the Ancestors threads to pick up photos of the family that they never knew existed.
I think we are jolly lucky to belong to this site.

Hi Cal,
The best bit was, that a cousin of mine sent this one to me, it has the whole of my dads family in. I had no idea that this was around and was so thrilled to get it! They are all Liverpool people, they were a wonderful bunch for enjoying themselves.
The mother was Irish and ruled with a rod of iron, which is probably why the children all went to the USA to live, only my dad and one sister came back to fight the war and stay in England.

Hi great to see the Feasey/Morris wedding & to put some faces on names I've got in my tree in NZ. My gggg grandfather was Richard Henry Feasey son of Daniel son of Richard & Ann (Hammett) so Daniel was Joseph Henry's brother. Richard Henry came to NZ in the 1870s

I love this thread, as you say, alannz, it's nice to put faces to names, and wedding photos are very useful for that.
Welcome to Roots, I'm sure you will have a wonderful time here.

A wonderful thread, I love seeing these photos, and thank you to all who have shared their treasured pictures. It brings a tear to the eye to see a family gathered for a happy occasion, and glimpse for a moment a special time for them. We have a large family and weddings were the only time we all got together. Sadly time stands still for no man and some have passed away now, but the memories and photos are treasured.
