After some terrific help from two kind people yesterday I wonder if I could impose again ::)
Looking for Andrew SMILES born 1807 in Felton, Northumberland and wife Ann born 1811 in Sheepwash, in the 1861 and 1871 census. They were living in Usworth, County Durham in 1851, with children William, John, Andrew, James, Henry, Hannah and Charles. I do have them in 1881 and 1891.
Many thanks, Linda

What about Andrew Smales baptised Longframlington 24 Oct 1802, born 4 Oct 1802 son of William Smales and Elizabeth Crosier?
I think the 1861 census says born Northumberland Framlington

Hi Janis
Thanks for replying funnily enough I have been torn between Smales/Smails for a good while' especially when you know that it really just depended on how the person (doing the census notes ) heard the name and how they would spell names on the forms, my grandmothers family Wharton was wrote as either Whiston/Warton/Werton in various records through history. But I have thought about Elizabeth crosier & William Smales they acutually stand out for some reason maybe it's because I have came across some of my family who did also emmigrate to Canada later in the 1900's ' but the spelling of the name is still something I need to verify

There was not really standardized spellings. Many people illiterate and dependant on those who could read and write--like the vicar. I know of one parish where the vicar's last name was Stephenson so everyone that last year was Stevenson then became Stephenson. Even town names were variable--Painshaw, Penshaw, Pensher
So was the Andrew and Ann Smiles you are looking for a miller or a brickmaker? There is an Andrew and Ann Smailes in 1861 in Morpeth with this Andrew born Wooler and was a journeyman miller.

Hi Janis
The Andrew I am looking for was a brick maker but my father's family were also Romany gypsies although I have yet to find a document as proof (from my gradfather's side of the family ..that is ) dad and his family always claimed to be 100% Romany and dad was actually the 7th son of the 7th son which means that the person is supposed to have certain powers (he could read Palm's tell fortune's read tea leaves and tell you the meanings of dreams ) I do know for certain that his mother Carnation Wharton/Whiston/Warton (born 1878 Sheriff hill Gateshead ) was from a very long line of Romany Gypsies so it must be true I have came across the name Smails on one of The Romany, site but without proof in front of me I cannot swear it as true (although if dad could read what I have just wrote he wouldn't be very happy with me for doubting him) I know dads father was a tin smith and would travel around with his horse & wagon selling his wares.
Thanks

If you find you have special powers please let me know the lottery numbers for next Wednesday. ;D I have a patient that thinks I send him telepathic messages during the night. I know I tried when my kids were little ---"go to sleep, go to sleep" but I guess they weren't receptive.

Sorry no chance there Janis :-X (although I am also The 7th son of The 7th) the missus is convinced I have the power to curse people who I don't like (but your in no danger Janis ) although I suppose it could be true in some cases ' but I'm not totally convinced but she swears by it . But I do wish you luck in the lottery....if you do win soon Janis you know my email address ;D
Take care
Tom
