They are buried in grave 119 of the K2 section

Cheers

Jay,

I will willingly.   I've received so much help from here that I'm more than happy to do something for someone in return

I shall be passing there later today, will do the lookup for you then - I'll take some photos.

One word of warning, I did the same thing for a friend in Aus., only to find that although I found the right area, none of the graves in that section had headstones.   However, I'll be happy to do it and will drop in here again later to let you know what, if anything I've found.

The news isn't good I'm afraid.

I searched K2 (which is fairly small in comparison to some of the areas), but I'm afraid I found no headstone(s) for the names you requested.

True, there were a small number of broken and illegible headstones, which I did my best to read, but still no luck.

As a long shot, I rang the Bereavement Officer at Maidstone (01622 738172) to see if they had any record.   The staff there are very helpful but it seems no headstone is recorded, they have records for K2 117 (Anderson): 118 (Mundy); 120 (Sears & Coppen, possibly that could be Coppin or Coppun, she wasn't sure) and for 121 (another Anderson) - but for the very one you want (119), sadly nothing.

I'm happy to go again and take some pictures of the K2 Section generally, but apart from that there doesn't appear to be much more to be done.

If there's anything else, let me know.

Hi Mogsmum

Thanks for looking.

The info re the plot number etc came from Maidstone & they said they thought a headstone existed for them.

I'll have to re-check what they sent me.

Cheers

Hi again Mogsmum

Just been checking the emails that Maidstone sent, copied below is what I received

"I can confirm that all three of the people you are searching for are interred together in Grave No 119 Section K2 of Maidstone Cemetery. There is a memorial on the grave".

They've also sent me a map of K2 section, which says grave 121 is a memorial to Steadman, which differs from what you have found.

Maybe I could scan & send you the map? Would you mind having another look?

Cheers

Send a scan by all means - I'll pm my e-mail and happily go and have another look.

To be fair, the person I spoke to said that the writing in whatever record she was searching through, was a bit unclear, as regards 121 she could well have read Anderson for Steadman (I suppose!).

At one time there used to be small 'spikes' in the ground in the cemetery, bearing numbers, so that you could narrow down the areas for the different graves, unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case anymore and when I mentioned this to the council, she seemed surprised - clearly either they've been removed or its a practice that has ceased during her period of tenure.

The only other thing she said was that "... some of the graves have number markers,"  unfortunately I didn't see any.

Just one last thing, if, as I suspect, you've visited other graves, you'll know that unless headstones are carved really deeply, the weather soon affects the stone, leaving any inscription almost illegible.   I found several in K2 which were as recent as 1998 but which were almost illegible.

But, I'll happily have another look.

You should have received my e-mail with attachments and ... and .. (pauses for drum roll!!) .... the pictures of the plot you seek.   Actually not at all near where MBC said it was, but, hey, it is Maidstone Council - which explains a great deal!

Hi there,

I'm really sorry but I'm afraid I can't help you.   I used to visit Maidstone every other day when my parents were alive (to look after them - you know the scenario) and so I passed the cemetery on my way to them and on the way back, but after they died - with no longer any ties to the area - we've moved 100 or so miles away.

I'm really sorry, I hope you can find someone to help - I know how frustrating it can be.   Good luck.

I have been told that a great uncle of mine is buried in the Sutton Road Cemetery,he was Henry Joseph Masters and he died in 1851 aged 5 months. The priest that officiated at the burial was a James Cook.Henry had lived in Bank Street,Maidstone. It would be great to have a photo of the grave if anyone lives nearby.
I was told that the cemetery was closed sometime between 1851 and 1886 but how can that be when I've seen people talking about burials in the 20th century?
I am also looking for my great x2 grandad, the father of Henry, with the same name.Henry Sr was born in Chatham 1820,he died in 1886 in Hackney where he was working. It makes sense that he would be buried with his firstborn son.If Henry Jr was in a grave by himself, even if part of the cemetery was closed to new graves, surely Henry Sr could be buried with his son?
There was another son who I can't trace as an adult,Thomas Robert,so maybe he died as a child. He was born in 1861.
  Any help much appreciated.
