Hello Carol,
Most of the people listed started off as Schmalcalder, the name changed late 1870's to Smallcalder, most of the family at the time were in the Queens Own Hussars or British Navy, I spose it was changed for obvious reasons, I'm mainly interested in the women side of the family, most of the men I have been able to track down Lucy is of main interest,
she was born a Schmalcalder but died a Smallcalder 1874,
so it is an akward one, coz' pre 1900 you are looking for Schmalcalder or Smallcalder
thx for your reply

Would Victor be Lucy's 1869 Child?
Hello Everyone,
Thx for all your interest and searching, fascinating information.
I beleive all the familys mentioned are of the same surname, some of the addresses I have correspond to them.
As to the child Victor I think this was Lucy Son because Jane was Lucy's Mum, maybe she was baby sitting at time, her Husband John had died in 1862. I Have Victor birth Certificate 1869,
Lucy is Mum, father unknown.
Weird that Jane has listed him as Son?
The other family mentioned Schmalealder, John the (carmen) was a son of Jane Schmalcalder, he had a few children as listed.
Going back to Lucy I would Imaging She was heavily pregnant with another son William born May 29th 1871, if she was a servent might she still be in living quarters at the residence were she worked, this would lead to a complicated situation with the Censuses, she died three years later in 1874 also her mum Jane
died the same year, leaving most of the family to tough it out.
The boys ended up in Strand Union Work House, were Victor and William stayed in house for most of 12 years, they both lived till the ages of 88 & 86 died the same year 1958, strange.
any way thx once again, the more information hopefully I can piece more of this family together,
I know I am being a bit cheeky but from the late 1870's is there any mention of Smallcalder in any of the Censuses 1891 mainly
Thanx once again

All this is is the ref number of her death-which I expect you already have?
Smallcalder, Lucy aged 26
December 1874
Pancras Volume 1b Page 133
Sorry couldn't find anything else- but I'll bear you in mind incase I come across the name again.
There are 6 Smallcalder families on the 2002 electoral roll.
A large one in Bournemouth.
Hope this helps in someway,
Carol

I think the trouble with finding them are the myriad ways of spelling the surname.
If you could identify who is missing from which census(es), then Rootschat might be able to find a few more.
Cheers,
Pauline

Hello Pauline & all,
Thanks for the post, I have taken my children up to the Science Museum to see the
Compass in question a few times, really great for them (Prismatic Compass, he invented patented it 1812) he is my 4th Generation GreatGrandfather, isn't the internet and the information it has amazing, I must admit though I did a lot of hard work at the London Metropolitan Archives to find the connection with the family and early spelling of surname, I can remember my uncle in the 70's trying to link and trace the family tree with not much luck, if he had known what I have now found out I think he would have been fascinated, really it has only taken me about 4 years to go back to 1460 in Marburg Germany with the Schmalkalder Family, have my own Website and still have that passion to explore the wealth of information there is.
Many Thanks
Steven
