According to the IGI Rebecca REED married in 21 Jun 1802 (or 21 Jan 1802) at Stedham John DOLLOWAY
Would anyone be able to track down her birth for me, please? She was, it seems, born in Bosham.
Thank you,
Jamie H

Lucky you Jamie, the marriage was by licence & the details are from the Sussex Marriage Index. First licence details;
Archdeaconry of Chichester Marriage Licence, 20 Jan 1802:
Rebecca READ, Bosham sev yrs sp 19 wcof George R of Bosham lab
John DOLLOWAY, Woolbeding 4 wks cordwainer bach 21
Sponsors ss; JD James BARTON of St.Olave Chich taylor
Then the marriage next day. wcof=with consent of father, which is George Reed :) & you also know her dob was about 1783.
Bosham, West Sussex, 21 Jan 1802:
Rebecca REED, otp
John DOLLOWAY, Woolbeding
The IGI gives an extracted baptism for Rebecca Read. 12/9/1784, Bosham d/o George Read & Mary Finch.
The Reed/Finch marriage did occur,
Bosham, West Sussex, 21 Jun 1781:
George READ, bach N Mundham (REED in banns)
Mary FINCH, sp otp
Witness wits: Thos BALAM Anne READ
Hope that helps,

Jane, what a lot of lovely information :D Thank you!
Can you tell me what "sev" means please? and "4 wks" -- and "JD" ?
Thank you so much.
Jamie
-
Hi Jamie ( and with apologies to Jane for butting in)
the "sev years" means that Rebecca has been resident in Bosham for several years, the 4 weeks would indicate that John had been resident in Woolbeding for at least 4 weeks.
JD are John Dolloway's initials.
Nell

Thank you, Nell, for the explanation of those abbreviations. So, John DOLLOWAY came from somewhere else entirely. Food for thought here.

Jamie, had a look on the Sussex Marriage Index under the name Dolloway & it doesn't seem much of a Sussex name, only 25 marriages between 1639-1838, predominately in East Sussex & only in West Sussex from about 1800. Maybe it's more of a Kent name?

Hullo Jane,
A belated thank you for your last post on this subject. I've been away from the Forum for a while and think I have neglected to acknowledge your help.

Jamie
The Reed name seems to be quite sparse in the villages surrounding Chichester so most probably most families are inter related in some way. My own Reed data traces back to the villages East of Chichester, mainly close to Barham - can trace back to about 1650. Also there is a link with my Reed data to Romsey in Hampshire.
Give me a toot if you think your research may link up with mine.

Thank you, Robert.
Not sure of a link. I take it you don't have the Rebecca Reed (or her father George Reed) I'm looking for in your line? Do you know what occupations your Reed ancestors followed?

Hi Jamie
Although Dolloway doesn't seem a very common West Sussex name there are loads of Dilloways on the IGI including this extracted record
John Dilloway baptised Woolbeding 20 JAN 1781 parents John and Mary
There is also a John Dilloway 65 Shoe Maker in Midhurst in 1841 wife Dila. Could be a remarriage for John?
Both entries might bear further investigation.
There are also baptisms on the IGI for children of John and Rebecca Dolloway/Delloway in Stedham/Woolbeding/Linch.
I can check all this out on the PR's for you next time I visit the West Sussex RO if you are still needing extra on this couple - not sure when that'll be though.
Jan ;)
-
Jan, thank you. If you had time when you next visit the West Sussex RO I'd be grateful for any info you can find about them. It does seem likely that the Dilloways and Dolloways are the same family.
Jamie :)
-
I will put them in my little green book

Thank you, Jan.

Hi Jamie,
Here you go.
In case the Woolbeding baptised John Dilloway is yours - thinking he maybe he was apprenticed elsewhere and only been back in the village a few weeks before marriage.
John Dilloway son of John Dilloway and Mary his wife was privately baptised January 20th and publicly recieved into the church February 15th 1781
Then
Linch
Mary dau of John and Rebecca Dolloway born 8 Mch 1812 bapt 26 Apr 1812
Woolbeding
Charles Delloway son of John and Rebecca abode Woolbeding baptised 1 Jun 1817 Shoemaker
Jane Delloway dau John and Rebecca abode Woolbeding baptised 4 Jul 1822
Shoemaker
Stedham
Elizabeth Dolloway dau of John and Rebecca abode Stedham baptised 10 Sep 1826 Cordwainer
Woolbeding
John Delloway burial Aug 30th 1827 Aged 46 abode Stedham
I couldn't establish what happened to Rebecca - couldn't see a Woolbeding, Stedham or Bosham burial before or 10 years after John's death or a remarriage in either of these places.
Hope this gives you a little more to work on. Please shout if you need anything else looked up in the PR's.

John Dolloway baptised Bosham Holy Trinity on 2nd July 1809 parents John and Rebecca Dolloway

Hi again Jamie
There is an 1838 marriage on FreeBMD for a Rebecca Dolloway in Midhurst district with a Robert Bailey on the same page and a Rebecca Bailey living in Stedham with a Robert Bailey and children plus a Jane 19 and Elizabeth 14 Dolloway in 1841. In 51 Rebecca gives her birthplace as Bosham.
Happy to post full census details if you need them
Jan ;)

Thank you very much, Jan. I'll digest all this and get back to you if I need more —in response to your kind offer.

Hi Jamie
I did notice a couple of other Dollaway burials in Stedham/Woolbeding - a George and a Charles I think but for some reason didn't note them down will pick up them up with the Bosham baptism details next visit.
Happy hunting
Jan ;)

Thanks, again :-)

Hi Jamie
The Bosham microfiche were hopeless - never seen quite such bad writing and disorganisation ??? :D
Did find these burials for you which helps lend weight to the Woolbeding John Dilloway parents John and Mary being your John Dolloway/Delloway
Woolbeding Burials
Mary Delloway of Woolbeding July 28 61y
John Delloway of Easebourne Poorhouse Jan21 81
Whoops no years :-[ - will recheck those for you

Hi. I have some DOLLOWAY/DALLOWAY/DALLAWAY information.
My great grandfather George’s mother was Sarah Brinkhurst [1809 – 1901], and her grandmother was Ann Dolloway who married Benjamin Brinkhurst on 14 April 1762 in East Hoathley, Sussex. She was born 29 June 1734 also in East Hoathley.
Ann had a brother William [and possibly also a brother John], and I have notes written by George circa 1923, which say:
‘Our family connections include an Uncle of my Grandfather named William Dallaway who as a Customs or Revenue Officer held a roving commission in the Counties of Sussex, Surrey and Kent, especially on all roads from the coast to London and other inland towns.’
In addition his will left ‘The miniature in gold mount of William Dolloway a great Uncle on my Mothers side’ to my grandfather, and it is still in the family.
So I could let you have a picture of William if he was a relative of yours.
Richard.
-
Richard, there could be a family connection. Would your George DOLLOWAY have been baptised 17 Nov 1805 at Holy Trinity, Bosham? I have a George DOLLOWAY bap then, whose parents were John DOLLOWAY and Rebecca READ.
They had children:
Elizabeth
Mary
Charles
Jane
George
John
William
But I think this 1805 George would be too old to be the one you refer to.
I can only go back to a possible John DILLOWAY who married a Mary someone. Could Ann be a sister of this John?

Jamie, Sorry I think that my message was confusing.
My gggrandfather George was George Herbert, not George Dolloway!
I think that I now have the relationships which are:
Thomas Dolloway b abt 1708 married Sarah ?, he died in Oct 1795, she in May 1778, both in East Hoathley/Hoathly.
Thomas & Sarah had the following children:
Ann b 28 Jun 1734, Thomas b 11 Apr 1736, Samuel b 22 Oct 1738, William b 14 Nov 1752, all in East Hoathley.
Ann Dolloway then married Benjamin Brinkhurst as per my earlier message.
I have not tried to find later Dolloways than Ann, they are a nightmare with so many possible spellings! Although the ancestry software picks up some of them, you have to search on at least 5 or 6 variations to catch them all!
Best regards, Richard.
-
Thank you, Richard. I'll keep a note of these. They must connect with my later Dolloways somewhere :-)
