Can anyone tell me how far Tubber is from Athlone and if Tubber is in County Westmeath ?I am having troublew finding any information about the place and its history.

The placename TUBBER is very common and occurs in most counties. It means the well or spring.

Thanks that is very interesting information,i didn't realise Tubber could be found in most counties.
The Tubber i am looking for is near Moate,some information says its in Co Westmeath and some say Offaly,so i am still confused !!

There are many different variants of Tubber, Tobar, Tubbrid, Turbrid. One in Offaly is Tober in the Parish of Tullamore. There is one of the same spelling in the parish of Mullingar. They all mean the same thing a well or spring.

Hiya Tom,

I had a look for Tubber in Sean Ruad's IreAtlas. I'm wondering why not one of these places called Tubber
that are so common in so many Irish counties are not mentioned when you do a search on that website.
By the way I did not use any spelling variation. Maybe I would have had more success if I'd done so.

I'd suspect the place you are seeking is spelt (fully) Ballintobber or Ballintober, but now usually Ballintubber (try Google) and called Tubber. This townland is about 20kms eat of Athlone, past Moate and on the north side of the Midland Railway line in an area usually marked as Rosemount. The Fetherstonehaugh family is usually associated with this area. I've been seeking a Deborah Booth born c1735, from this area. Mick
