Dear Ros,

I have found the following Marriages for Robert Riley which took place in Preston which could be worth some investigating !

Marriages Mar 1852
Riley  Robert     Preston  8e 509

Marriages Mar 1868
Riley  Robert     Preston  8e 685

Marriages Dec 1868
Riley  Robert     Preston  8e 785

Marriages Dec 1873
RILEY  Robert     Preston  8e 831

Marriages Sep 1874
Riley  Robert     Preston  8e 832

Marriages Sep 1878
Riley  Robert     Preston  8e 852

Marriages Jun 1883
Riley  Robert     Preston  8e 844

Marriages Dec 1891
Riley  Robert     Preston  8e 896

These records would be held at Bow Street Preston where you could view the records to identify the father. This is easily in walking distance from the train station.

A possible connection to Preston and Pendleton could have been the cotton mills ! It would be interesting to know of Roberts trade during this time.

I feel it is quite possibe that Robert's father would have travelled for the Wedding in Pendleton.

 :)

My mother was Riley, the earliest known location is in Bangalore, India,b. 19/12/1843, John Riley.

His father John Riley, b. where & when  unknown, other than in, Dublin, 1834, he is the father of Elizabeth, b1834, and in 1839 he is the father of John H Riley born Hamilton, Scotland, from information it appears he had these two children with a first "partner" before going to India with Jane Unknown to start another family

John unknown was a farrier in the 15th Hussars, hence the moving around and from the ages of the first two children i guess he was b. c. 1810/15, maybe in Lancashire?. so if you do link to any of the above please let me know.

Hi everyone.
My surname is Riley and a good friend once old me that it was a racing certainty that my decendants would have come originally from Ireland. Obviously, the spelling has altered over the years.
I was later informed that my surname had its' roots in Lancashire.
Well, Ive traced my ancestors back as far as 1771 and not one of the blighters has come from anywhere other than Yorkshire.
Having said that, one of them did marry a Lancashire lass - one Jane Squires, born Blackstone Edge 1833 -  and I can't trace her for love nor money !

Kind regards,

David - Yorkshire.

Good Morning or should I say afternoon david,
Well I havent really did much research on my RILEY family as of yet, I have only my grandmother's mother Betty Riley, her parents Henry Riley and Roasanna Chadwick, and Henry's Dad , who was also named Henry, I dont know who or when he married, I ve run across a WILLIAM , JOHN, CYRUS, SUSANNAH, ALICE THOMAS AND SARAH RILEY,all of habergham , however I still need to dedude who is who, and where it fits in my tree, if at all, will be checking the 1841 and 1881 census for that info, let me know if you have anything interesting, I will certainly keep you posted

Hi: My paternal, maternal, maternal, paternal great great, great grand father's name was Robert Riley of Preston, I believe.  One of his son's, my great, great grandfather, James Riley of Read, married my great, great grand mother, Mary Ann Robinson of Liverpool, perhaps. I have no information on   Mary Ann Robinson's parents.
James Riley and Mary Ann Robinson migrated to Jamaica between 1860 and 1882 and resided in the parish of Hanover.

If you believe that there is a chance that we might be related or if any one else has any further info about Robert Riley's descendants and or Mary Ann Robinson ancestry, I would be delighted to do some cross references with you.

Hi Heather: the census data you presented seem accurate; James Riley and Mary Ann Robinson were married most likely in Lancashire; and moved to Jamaica, WI as a young couple, where they had their children; I cannot find any supporting marriage or immigration records however. hence, inconclusive, as to whether or not the were married in Jamaica, Lancashire or in some other county in the UK.

One of my great, great, great grandfather's name was Robert Riley, born about 1816, in or in the vicinity of Simonstone, Lancashire, England. It appeared that his wife was Jane Metcalf, born about 1817 in, (or in the vicinity) of Read, Lancashire.

They had five children of record.

James Riley, born about 1845 at Read, Lancashire (my great, great grandfather),
Rebecca, born about 1849, Read, Lancashire, England
Robert Riley, born about 1849, Padiham, Lancashire, England
Elizabeth Riley, born about 1853, St John's, Preston, Lancashire, England
Mary Riley, dob unknown.

James Riley was married to Mary Ann Robinson (my great, great grandmother);
They moved to Hanover, Jamaica, WI, perhaps during the 1870s. I have no information about Mary Ann's parents, siblings or grandparents. I have reason to speculate, however, that she was born in Leeds, Lancashire.

If  your family name is Robinson and or Riley, connected to Jamaica and/or Lancashire; or if you have either of these names in your genealogical chart, there is a probability that we might be related. Hence, I would like to make contact with you, as I probe for answers about the ancestry of Mary Ann Robinson, in particular.
(James and Mary Ann also had a son whose name was Robert Riley, born in the 1880s)

Peter Riley my 2nd great grandfather whose census records say he was born in Ireland, married Mary Dillon in 1850 who was also from Ireland. They lived in St Helens Lancashire. There is a Farnworth near Widnes which is not far from St Helens.

My mother's father's family are Riley from Lancashire (Rochdale).
Her father was born in Rochdale, Reginald Riley. He had 8 brothers and one sister.
5 brothers died in WW1. Only 3 brothers lived past the age of 20.
I am looking for his brothers daughters. His brother was John William Riley, died 23 April 1953. He had 3 daughters. Elizabeth, born 1904 who married a William Purdy.
Hetty, born 1906 and possibly married a John Greenlees.
Annie Riley was born in 1908 and i believe married someone named Wilfred, but have no last name.
She may also have a son named Eric, but again not sure.

Due to town records lost during the American Revolution, having trouble tracking my Riley lineage. Unsure whether lineage is English or Irish. Earliest confirmed ancestor is John Riley (1764-1852) born in Eno, Orange County, North Carolina, USA. Married to Sally Redman (or Redmond), 1774-1860. Potential parents for John are: Edward William Riley (1733-1780) and Mary Eleanor Hillhouse (1735-1800), both born in Philadelphia, PA, USA. Potential grandparents for John are: William Arthur Riley (1705-1744) and Mary Sherman (b. 1720), both born in Pennsylvania. Potential great grandparents for John are: Edward Riley (1680-1748), born in Maryland, and Hannah Beavis (b. 1680), in Warwickshire. Potential 2nd great grandparents for John are: Edward Riley (1644-1689), born in Prince George's, Maryland, USA and Marjory Kemp (1645-1689), also born in Maryland.
