Hello everyone, my name is Summers and as a newbie on site I hope you can point me in the right direction... :)
I recently started doing research on my grandmothers side of the family 'SCANLON' please advise the best place on site to post my request for help.
Only just recently found this website, my head is spinning at all the topics...wow....magic........looking forward to your replies, handy hints etc....cheers Summers 8)

Hi Summers, and welcome to Rootschat. :D
Why don't you start by spelling out what you DO know about your grandmother and her family and tell us what you are looking for?
Cheers,
Ros

Hi, Ros
Many thanks for your welcome post, do hope you can point me in the right direction, as at the moment I feel a bit lost.
My late Mother had just about all the Birth-Death Certs, for the family members that I will list below, sadly when my Mother died the paperwork got mislaid....ahhh!!!. :'(
Well here goes....My grandmother Ellen Scanlon born 1885, lived in Hebburn on Tyne County Durham, England.
Siblings that I am aware of include sisters, Siobiner (Dinah) and Sarah Scanlon, they both moved from the North of England, down to Portsmouth, and lived and worked there till they died.
The two brothers (may have been others) Peter and Phelan Scanlon left England (date unknown) for a new life, one in America the other in Canada.
My great-grandfather was named Phelan Scanlon born 1863. Phelan worked in the Shipyards as a Riveter. His wife my great-grandmother was called Bridget, born 1864 (nee Brannon) they married on the 14th February 1884 and lived in Hebburn on Tyne.
While I have no idea how to take the next step..do I have to trace Birth-Deaths Records etc? Can this be done via the web? ..Any help advice would be truly magic....cheers Summers

Hi Summers,
I checked the WWI Database for Canadian Soliders and there was a Phelim Scanlon, born Belfast, Ireland who served. His father is listed as Phelim Scanlon with an address of 27 Prince Consort Lane, Hebburn, England.

Hello Rambler, Yet again I have to say truly a Sincere Thank You, those that you listed are my g-grandfather Phelim and g-grandmother Bridget (I have photos of both of them) and the bit that made me get a lump in my throat was that Ellen Agnes Scanlan (Scanlon) was my grandmother, As a child I lived with her for nine years, when she died I was devastated, you have helped as I had no idea she was born in Wallsend. Sabina my Aunt (Again I have photos of Dinah thats what the family called her..)she moved from the North East of England and lived in Portsmouth till she died, I was lucky as when I was about 17yrs old I went down and spent a great holiday at her home
So Thank you again, please can you list the website you got the info from.....how can you tell I am a newbie....mega hugs Summerx

Hi Summer,
It's possible to search the 1881 census free at http://www.familysearch.org
There are various sites with some or all of the other available censuses (1841-1901) on a pay-as-you-view or subscription basis, including http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/ and http://www.1837online.com
If you're in the UK, larger libraries have the censuses on microfilm, and CDs are available commercially.
You can always post lookup requests on the relevant county board, as RootsChatters have access to all kinds of resources they are willing to share!

Morning Rambler,
Yet again I have to say special Thank You, the links you have posted I will try later today...I hope that in time I am able to give advise to a newbie, the same as you have done for me...
Can I ask what gave you the push to start doing your family research,.
If I had not gone to Ireland (Cobh) with friends last October I may never have done this.....cheers Summer

I think I was always interested in "family" - my maternal grandparents told all kinds of tales about weird and wonderful rellies, and my uncle started researching that side 20+ years ago. I joined in when I first got internet access and bought some genealogy software, and things just took off from there....

Help advice wanted..my late grandmother was widowed twice in her lifetime Ellen Scanlon (m/n) her first husband was called Michael Lydon, and all I was told was that he came from Ireland.
They had four children that I only have names for ..as yet no dates of birth; Thomas (eldest) then Catherine next Michael jr and last but not least Philip (he died young, possibly when he was 7 or 8yrs old?) this was following an accident.
My grandmother Ellen Scanlon (m/n)was born in 1885 Wallsend on Tyne England..and they lived in Hebburn County Durham
Can anyone advise how I find out more info ie when they got married etc...
I think she married her second husband (Michael Taylor) again from Ireland around 1925/6? again they lived in Hebburn County Durham.
Any links no matter how small will be of great value..a sincere thank you to anyone who can help.........Summer
-
Her first marriage is on Free BMD:
Marriages Dec 1912
LYDON Thomas (spouse's surname SCANLON)
SCANLON Ellen (spouse's surname LYDON)
S.Shields 10a 1622
If I cut and paste the link to FreeBMD, it gets changed to something else when I post: either google "FreeBMD" or try pasting this link into your browser, then remove the spaces in the middle!
http://www. freebmd.org.uk /cgi/search.pl
Later years aren't covered very well on FreeBMD yet, but you can search the complete GRO index free at
http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx
It takes a little patience to work through the quarters (and the indexing is a little iffy at times), but you can usually find what you're looking for. Look for LYDON births from 1912 onwards: by this time, the mother's maiden name is also given in the index, so you should be able to find the children's births.

Hi Rambler.......Yet again I have to say a sincere Thank You......I will try the links later on, and add the details to my fast growing lists.
I hope to catch up with cousins next week and fingers crossed they may have a photo of Thomas........my heart is racing again at the thought they may just have one picture..I have a number of family photos that go way back, but non of Thomas.....so it would be lovely.
mega magic thank you again....you are truly brilliant..cheers Summer

Now as I am recently retired, I can restart my family research. May I take this opportunity to pass on a trillion blessings to those who helped me find my way in the early days.
Its one long 'Adventure' when you start seeking your 'Family Roots'. Yes the roads may have many twists and turns..but the end rewards are truly worth it as you find out 'Just Who You Are'
Sincere 'Thank You' Summers :)
