Thank you so much, Pam. The 1841 family is obviously the right one. William apparently fought in the Peninsular War. I don't think the 1851 lot are mine-none of these Christian names run in the Chalmers family. Unfortunately, Chalmers was a popular name in Fife.
Best wishes,
Elisabeth

Can I ask for some more Chalmers/Chambers in the 1841 Clackmannan census, please? I have found my William, Janet and family on the 1851 census and was astounded to see that in the two houses next door to them at Howtown were John and Betsy Chalmers(b. about 1821 in Clackmannan) and Andrew and Helen Chalmers(b. 1816 Clackmannan). I have no idea who these Chalmers are, but I can't imagine that it is just a coincidence. I think John and Andrew's parents may be David and Margaret Chalmers, so any sightings of these names in 1841 might give me a clue.
Many thanks

Thank you Monica and Pam. What are the chances of three families of Chalmers being at Devon Iron Works and one not being related, I wonder? Unfortunately, I've already traced the David Chalmers in my lot(William's brother)-he was in Alva in 1841/51 with his family- so I don't know how David Chalmers and Margaret Harrower's family could tie in. Don't start me on Harrowers! My gg grandfather was a Harrower from Clackmannan. Every second surname in Clackmannan is Harrower or Hunter. It's never easy, is it?
Regards,
Elisabeth

I know it has been a while since this was posted but I found this by accident. I have been doing some family research and among some papers that I found in an old family bible was a paper about William Chalmers about which nobody seemed to know anything about, it gave more or less his history bit was headed death of a Peninsular War hero. He was a sergeant in the Coldstream Guards I will attach this. From my research he was born in 1793 in Flisk in Fife and died in 1864 and is buried along with his wife Janet Fenton spelled Fenten on on the stone in Clackmannan Parish church graveyard this I only found this week the stone being in good condition. His daughter Ann married a man called John Westland whose daughter Margaret married James Mckenzie from Alva who was my great grandfather making William Chalmers my 3 times grandfather. Ihope this is of help. Ian Hall.
