Hi Gladys

There is a death of an Edward William Potts in 1882 Chester le Street, Durham (10a 287).

Do you think that might be him ? (If you cannot find him anywhere else).

I see from the 1881 census that Edward William Potts was born in Camperdon in Northumberland in about 1839.

Hi Gladys,

It's been a while.  Please check out the ship Lord Clive in 1881.  I am thinking that 'if' this is my great grandfather than maybe he went to the USA and then possibly returned by 1891.  On the Lord Clive he seems to travel with Smith's which we know was his sister's married name.

Jim

Hi Jim,  i would take it that is your great grandfather on the Lord Clive Ship as his age fits with his birth 1839.  Your web site is brilliant.  I am kept quite busy with my family trees and keep getting more contacts and it takes so much time to see to them and with having other dutys to do. Keeps me busy.   gladys :)

Hi Gladys,

Glad to hear from you.  I also 'think' that he may have returned to England at some point prior to the 1891 census.  Do you know of any way to check that?  I have also seen an Edward Potts as a laborer in Philadelphia in 1890, but by himself.  My Great grandmother shows up in the 1900 USA census with 2 of the children (my grandfather Robert and his sister Phoebe, both born in Easington), but no evidence of Edward.

Hey Gladys,

Are you saying that your granny went to the US an returned prior to 1891?  Do you think they traveled together?  What evidence or info do you have surrounding this?  Do you think the Camperdon "Edward" is our Edward?

Hiya Jim, As we know Edward William was staying with the Smith family in 1881 census and the census would have been taken in April, what was the month and year the Lord Clive sailed for America, he was with the Smiths on that ship and his age fits. Did you ever find him in 1891.   My granny went to Pennsylvania when she was ten with her grandparents 1884 on the ship`
