Unable to find birth data for William Taylor, born around 1850, son of William Taylor and Mary Ure who married in 1848. He worked as a bricklayer and died in Glasgow in 1906, aged 56. He was married in 1872 to Annie Carse (who died in 1873) and then in 1874 married Martha Irvine. I have the census data for 1861 to 1901 inclusive all of which report his birthplace as Glasgow.
The 1851 census shows a William Taylor, Mary Taylor (the right ages for his parents) and John aged 1. John was a brother who later died in 1855, so the lack of William on the 1851 census indicates he was born after that census. He also had a sister, Rachel, who was born 1853-54 and also died in 1855 - her death cert. says she was born in Dale St, Bridgeton.
Cannot find any record of the birth of any of these 3 children (John, William and Rachel). Can anyone help?
Thanks

I suspect the OPR records either weren't made or have not survived for these births prior to 1855. You're fortunate in that you have a very narrow window in which he must have been born so that your age estimate has got to be close. By searching the IGI you learn that this couple continued to stay in the Bridgeton area for awhile and this is a list of subsequent births to them:
JOHN TAYLOR
Birth: 31 JUL 1855 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
RACHEL TAYLOR
Birth: 27 FEB 1857 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
DANIEL TAYLOR
Birth: 29 SEP 1858 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
HUGH TAYLOR
Birth: 11 MAY 1860 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
MARY URE TAYLOR
Birth: 29 JUL 1861 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
HUGH TAYLOR
Birth: 03 APR 1863 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
ALEXANDER TAYLOR
Birth: 18 JUN 1866 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
MARY URE TAYLOR
Birth: 02 APR 1868 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
If you view the BC of John recorded in 1855 on Scotlands People it will contain a reference to how many children previously born to this couple that are living or dead in 1855. Unfortunately no names will be given but you can further estimate from this if you have accounted for all the births you think you are missing. Hope this makes sense?
Best wishes

Thanks Jean - yes, I have all that data and the 31 Jul 1855 birth cert of John Taylor says that there were 3 prior children, one boy deceased (presumably the first John, shown in the 1851 census, who died 7 May 1855), one girl deceased (Rachel who died 12 May 1855) and one boy living (presumably William). So I am fairly confident that I have found all the children, of whom only 3 survived childhood - "my" William, John who married Jane Walker and Hugh who married Catherine Reid. It is just that the William Taylor I am looking for is my direct great grandfather and it is aggravating to have no formal confirmation of birth date and location.
Arrghhh.

Hi there,
Bizarrely, the only William Taylor that I can find that remotely fits has a mother Mary URE but father Humphrey Taylor ??? He was born in Barony parish, which is the same parish in which Mary URE and William TAYLOR married. I can find no marriage record for a Humphrey Taylor and Mary Ure. I am wondering if there has been either a mistranscription of William Taylor's (father) name (would have to have been very bad handwriting!), or if William was also known as Humphrey at some point ??? Of course, it could just be coincidence and 2 men called TAYLOR may have married 2 different Mary UREs.
Cheers,
Clare

Thanks Clare - I've seen the entry for Humphrey Taylor / Mary Ure, but have not been able to prove or disprove it is the "correct" William Taylor - but it is probably unlikely because (I think - I'm not in front of my records) that Humphrey and Mary have lawful children before and after the marriage of William Taylor and Mary Ure.
Thanks anyway

Thanks Joe - I have the info from all the census returns from 1851 to 1901 for this family but thanks anyway for taking the time to look into it. The problem is locating the birth record for the first 3 children (see Clare's first note of 7th Aug 2006 and my reply), but it looks like the formal records don't exist although I have not yet finished checking the OPR page by page by page by page by.... you get the idea :)
I have also found William's business recorded in the PO Directory for Glasgow, but there is no additional information
Thanks again

been there....done that :) , but still no eureka moment :(
And the Mitchell Library in Glasgow is cheaper (i.e. free) for Glasgow records
