Hi
We have worked back from my husband's grandmother, Baker (still alive) and know that her father was married to Emily Winn in 1907 using the name Woolf. We have the marriage certificate showing Phillip was 27 and a tailor - father was Abraham Woolf, Tailor. We now believe that Phillip Woolf was actually born Phillip Lupinsky (lupine - of the wolf?!) to Abraham and Rebecca Lupinsky.
Abraham came from Poland and as we can't find him prior to 1871, presume he came to England shortly before this. Rebecca was born in London. Their children were Sarah 1866, Joshua 1868, Barron 1870 (died 1871), Abraham 1875 and Phillip 1879.
Rose believes that the name change to Baker came after Phillip's marriage due to pressure from the Winn family (non-Jews), so it was possibly only Phillip that became Baker.
A few requests :- can anyone give direction as to where we might find information on the family prior to their arrival in England.
Can anyone find a marriage between Abraham Lupinsky and Rebecca?
Can anyone find Phillip Lupinsky/Woolf/Baker or any of the rest of the family in 1901. The last sighting was 1891 - RG12/235 f120 p1.
Many thanks.

Hi Rambler
Fantastic - thank you. Don't know why I couldn't find it ???
I will have a look for Rebecca on 1861 now.
Many thanks.
Tracy :)

I have found Rebecca Lewis on both 1861 and 1851 but no luck with the family in 1841.
1861 is RG9/210 f76 p52.
1851 is HO107/1543 f515 p23.
Any help with 1841 would be appreciated :)

My great great grandparents were named Abraham and Rebecca Lupinsky. It would be amazing if they were the same people you are researching. Here is what I know...
Abraham Lupinsky (deceased)
Immediate Family: Husband of Rebecca
Father of Rose (Bud), Molly, Jack, Rachael and Fanny
The only detail that I know is about Rose: born May 15, 1897
Death: February, 1979 (81) in Philadelphia

Hi Laura and welcome to Rootschat Jamienet :)
It would appear that Philip Lupinsky is not the same as Phillip Woolf who married Emily Laura Winn.
The original marriage entry in the parish register shows:
St John the Evangelist, Kilburn, Middlesex
October 13th 1907
Philip WOOLF (vicar uses one L)
Bachelor
23
Omnibus conductor
? Cambridge Road
Father: Abraham WOOLF, tailor
Emily Laura WINN
Spinster
20
115 Cambridge Road
Father: William Charles WINN, stevedore
Phillip (he signs with double L) and Emily signed the register
Witnesses: Adam BRIDGMAN, Florence WINN
In the 1911 Census indexes there are :
Phillip WOOLF 1886 with Emily Laura and child in Willesden, Middlesex
Philip LUPINSKY 1880 with parents Abraham and Rebecca in Hackney at the same address as the 1901 Census
There appear to be at least three children with Woolf as surname and mother’s maiden name as WINN:
Dec Qtr 1911 Willesden Vol 3a Page 350
Annie M
Dec Qtr 1915 Islington Vol 1b Page 266
Rose A
Jun Qtr 1917 Edmonton Vol 3a Page 811
William A
And there is a Millicent Emily WOOLF who could be the child with Phillip and Emily in the 1911 Census:
Sep Qtr 1908 Hendon Vol 3a Page 279
Is this the right family? Do you have Rose’s birth cert?

Jamienet, there is a Petition for Naturalisation document for Abraham and Rebecca Lupinsky made in Philadelphia and dated 20th November 1912, with supporting document of intention to become a US citizen dated 7th August 1906.
According to this naturalisation document Abraham was born 18th July 1868 at Bornitch, Russia. He emigrated from Russia via Bremen aboard the vessel Darmstadt on 25th November 1904, arriving Baltimore on 8th December 1904.
He was married to Rebecca born ?Boizin Russia. Now residing at 544 ?W ?Moyamensing Avenue, Philadelphia. At that time he had three children:
Fanny b 3rd March 1893
Rose b 12th December 1896
Rachael b 10th May 1901, all born Benditcher, Russia
Referees:
Benny ?Smiler and Louis Powell, both Laundrymen of Philadelphia
Abraham was 5’7”, complexion fair, eyes gray, hair dk brown, no distinguishing marks; wife’s age 47
Kind regards
Gaie
Added: Abraham's occupation was Shirt Operator

Just as background info: LUPINSKY to WOOLF is probably "anglicisation"
In an english speaking country, he would probably have wanted to, or been recommended to change his name, to something "more english".
Lupus (latin) = wolf, so WOOLF would be a logical choice, but still just that little bit different.

How do I get a copy of te naturalization paper and the form that says the boat name? This is so interesting- but could be a fulltime job and very $$$. Worth it- but it is so hard when you do not know where to find things. I really appreciate your help!!!

Hi Jamiemet
I've sent you a PM ;)
At the moment I'm trawling through the ship's manifest for the Darmstadt to find Abraham; he's not showing up in the transcriptions but it's very badly written so it's a case of going through all 48 pages to find him! That's if he came over under the name Abraham Lupinsky..... ::) I'll get back to you with what I find.
Kind regards
Gaie

There is an Abram RAPINSKI on board the Darmstadt, aged 38 (so born c1866), occupation tailor; can read and write; nationality Russian; race Hebrew; looks like he came from Boisan; going to Philadelphia; he had $65 dollars; been to the US before in 1890 or 1892; who he was going to stay with has been crossed out - it looks like xxx Rapinsky in Philadelphia - and friend Hersch Korenfeld has been written in. He appears to be accompanied by a son, Faima? aged 17.
That's the closest I can find in the lists. The dates Abraham gave in his naturalisation application for the Darmstadt leaving Bremen and arriving at Baltimore are correct.
Kind regards

There is this ship's manifest which may be Rebecca arriving with the children:
SS Breslaw sailing from Bremen 27th July 1905 arriving Baltimore 9th August 1905
?Rilke LUPINSKI 40 Russian Hebrew; going to Philadelphia; fare paid for by husband; in possession of $1; going to husband Abr Lupinski, Philadelphia 144 ?; c/o Morris Waner, Lowell Street.
Children:
Malke 20 Female
Frige 15 Female
Reise 7 Female
Rachel 4 Female
So this may account for the four girls, and Jack being the son accompanying Abr(ah)am in 1904.

Jacob Lupinsky also applied for naturalisation:
Jacob LUPINSKY of 544 W Moyamensing Av (it says W Montgomery Av on the declaration page), occupation driver, was born 5th August 1887 in Berditcher, Russia. He immigrated from Bremen on 25th November 1904 and arrived Baltimore on 8th December 1904 on the Darmstadt. He declared his intention to become a US citizen on 29th April 1910 in Philadelphia and petitioned for naturalision 12th November 1912.
He was not married. Sponsors: Benny ?Snider and Louis Powell, Laundrymen. He was of medium complexion, 5'6" tall, brown hair, brown eyes, no distinguishing marks. Sworn in court 11th July 1913.
It's all coming together!!

I wonder if Abraham's and the children's place of birth was Berdychiv now in Ukraine (Barditchev in Yiddish).

I googled it this afternoon and thought the same thing.
Berdychiv (Ukrainian: Бердичів, Polish: Berdyczów, Russian: Берди́чев, translit. Berdichev) is a historic city in the Zhytomyr Oblast (province) of northern Ukraine.
I started a 'tree' on geni and already have about 1000 people attached to it! But... the most important thing to me is to find all the great great great grandparents... with your help I have found 2 of the 10 people I am looking for :-)

Hi all
Sorry to take so long to respond, but the notification got filtered as junk by Yahoo!
Don't worry about the highjack! Just glad jamiemet has had such success.
I need to spend some more time on Philip Woolf then. I now know he was born in Poland (from 1911 census), but there is still a mystery about the name change to Baker and his birthdate (some docs give 1880 some 1884).
Sadly Rose died last year aged 87 but, unbelievably, her older sister is still alive aged 101 so probably need to try to find out more from her.
Best of luck with the rest of your search!
Tracy
