Hi there
Can anyone find the following four brothers' arrival in NZ?
William Lisson BAILEY, c1857
James Alexander BAILEY, c1857
Walter Ambrose Lucas BAILEY, c1860
Henry George BAILEY, c1872
The first three went goldmining so they may have arrived in the South Island. Henry settled in the North Island.
Cheers
Doug

Hi Doug
Can't help with their arrivals but found the following which you may already have.
Found several sites in connection with this family, but you are probably already aware that there are others out there looking for them.
Found the following at Archway
William Lisson Bailey died 1915
Walter Ambrose Lucas Bailey died 1917
both probate are for Palmerston North, with the records being held in Wellington
didn't find any for James Alexander Bailey there are however 51 James Bailey.
hope this helps.

Thank you for this info. I have much of the information on the brothers after they arrived in New Zealand, but their arrivals and first few years on the gold fields are somewhat vague. The arrival dates are taken from their death certificates.
-
Hi Doug,
Sorry not to be bearing good news but could you let us know where you believe the brothers to have sailed from, i.e. which country? That would help us to narrow down the search a lot!
Cheers

The brothers were all born in Tasmania, Australia but their mother, Jane Manning BAILEY, returned to London about 1856, leaving just William and James in Australia. They visited London in 1857 and then sailed to NZ together, Walter following three years later.
All sailed from England (the family was living in London), but William, James and Walter may have stopped in Australia (Tasmania) en route to catch up with friends.

Hi Dougnz
I am currently researching my wifes family who were early settlers in Feilding. Your Bailey names seemed familiar to me and this morn I rediscovered where i saw them. Three of them, William, Walter and Henry occupy a page in the book" Swamps, Sandflies and Settlers" the history of Feiding and the Manchester Block. Pub Feilding and Districts Historical Society, 2000.
Have a look at it.

Thanks, alamar. That's them, all right. My g-g-grandfather, Wal, was 13th mayor of Feilding if my memory serves me right.
What is the name of your wife's family?
Cheers

Hi DougNZ
My wife's gt grandfather was a Henry COOMBE who married Christina MURRAY, one of the highland Scots from Turakina. They moved to Feilding when land was first made available for public sale. They had a farm in what is now North Street. All of the COOMBE graves and almost all of the MURRAY graves in the Feilding cemetery are her families. Poor old Henry suffered the ironic fate of being gored to death by his own bull as he led it along the Makino Road in 1892. Send me a PM if you want more info.
In relation to yr BAILEY brothers and as a born and bred Dunedin boy, I have to point out that gold was not discovered in Otago until 1861. They could not therefore have travelled to the Otago goldfields in 1857. Nelson perhaps but certainly not Otago.
-
Small world; I know the names, but only vaguely. My grandparents lived almost on the corner of North Street and Kimbolton Road. Originally it was a Sandilands' property until my great-grandfather bought it about 1930.
I over simplified the goldfields for this forum, although I wonder if the older two boys caught a sniff of the Nelson or Southland rushes in 1957. Prior to that they were on the goldfields of Victoria in Australia. They seem perfectly placed for Reid's discovery at Tuapeka in 1861 and were mining until at least 1864 when they turned their hands to sawmilling, eventually owning sawmills throughout Manawatu and Rangitikei.

The Coombe family farmhouse was on the site now occupied by the Coombrae old peoples home.
Have you tried the Dunedin NZSG. They have an index of early Otago settlers. The settlement was founded 1848 so 1857 would qualify as early I would think. Especially since it was before the inundation that the gold discovery caused. Also the Wellington Public Library keep a Pioneers Roll of early arrivals into Wellington. My wife's other side who settled in the Hutt, Palmerston North and Turakina/Marton are all recorded on it.

Good suggestions. Thanks, alamar.

Hello
I have just come across this while researching my ancestors in New Zealand.
Frank Evans Bailey was my great great Grandfather.
His brothers, all by the name Bailey, were:
William Lisson
James Alexander
Henry George
Walter Ambrose
Alfred Manning
Also two sisters Elizabeth Amelia, and Sarah.
I have the entire family tree for all these families from their parents James Alexander, Jane Manning (nee Lisson) to 1997. Which I am happy to share.
I would very much like to get in touch with as many members of the family in New Zealand as possible
-
I also have a photograph of all the brothers, of Jane Manning and various other family members
-
Hi David
Thanks for making contact, cousin. Whose boy are you (first name only, for security, please)?
If you are on Facebook, search for Bailey Family (of Somerset). I moderate that so if you join the group, we can go from there.
Regards
Doug

My g g grandfather is Frank Evans Bailey, my g grandfather (whom I met as a child) is Frank Deane Bailey. His daughter Mimi Kathleen was my grandmother.
I don't know of any Baileys in Somerset. Can you tell me from which of sons or daughters of James Alexander and Jane Manning they are descended?
If they are related I'd like to be in touch.
I did a Facebook search for Bailey Family and found a couple of groups. Can you post the link here for the one you moderate. Thanks.
-
Fantastic, David. I met your great-uncle, John, when he was in NZ (he was great mates with my grandfather) and stayed with Anne & Vernon and met Hazel & Robyn when I was in the UK last. I also met Neil and Rae, and their families.
The Somerset connection is historical, with James Alexander Bailey's father and grandfather, etc, coming from Taunton. Whilst we are a Westcountry family, we are specifically a Somerset family. The Bailey Family (of Somerset) fb page is https://www.facebook.com/groups/550117938724601/ Part of its reason for existance is to attract Baileys from Somerset and to entice them to take Y-DNA tests for us to try and find early cousins.
-
This is v good to know. I only met John, Hazel and Ann once or twice. Through my Uncle Christopher when I was in my late teens/early 20's. (I was born 1967).
Did you know John's sister Brenda only died in the last couple of years, well into her 90's.
Thanks for the link. I have asked to join. It would be good to connect with the Somerset family.
I have been to NZ three times. But I didn't know about/wasn't interested in the family when I was there first age 21.
On my last visit in 2002 I met up with Ian Bailey, he introduced me to several family members in the Palmerston North / Fielding / Ohakea area. I also met some relatives in Wellington. Unfortunately I didn't note down who I met, and it was before the days of social media. At that time unfortunately I didn't have the family tree clear in my mind at that time, so couldn't place people.
Ian did take me to see the graves of some of my great great Uncles in Fielding and Sanson, which I found surprisingly emotional!
Is (*) still alive do you know?
He introduced to someone who remembered as a child visiting my grandmother when she worked in the Midland hotel In Wellington in the 1950's. She came to NZ to connect with the family.
I have photo of all the great Uncles, which I can only assume was taken in NZ in the 1890's. A major trip for the two London based brothers. Who must have heard about their NZ brothers all their lives but never met since children. I'd be happy to share it with you, or should I put it on the FB page?
My nephew has a job in NZ starting this September. My sister's family and I may come out to NZ to visit later next year.
The more I look into the family tree I am not surprised I was drawn to there, as is he. The major mass/gravity of the family is there!!

So great to have made contact, David. Ian is the family historian, having collected details on all of James Alexander Bailey's descendants - a mammoth task! I am more the expert on the UK family history and Ian's understudy on NZ stuff. Ian is very much alive and still going strong. He will enjoy seeing you pop up on fb. I did not know about Brenda; thank you for the update.
I'll make contact through messenger and find out about your nephew and your possible trip.
-
Yes messenger will be easier.
Are you NZ or UK based?
Good to hear Ian is still alive.
Good to hear you know of the UK connections. I'd like to be in contact with Neil and Rae's descendants.
-
I'm NZ-based.
