I am in need of help with the following family as my research has come to a complete standstill. I have been trying to trace the O'Hanlon family of Belfast, but have reached the point where my James O'Hanlon could be any of four candidates in the birth registers.
I have a birth certificate for Patrick O'Hanlon born at 43 St Dock St, Belfast on the 30th June XXXX to James O'Hanlon and Martha Russell.
And a marriage certificate:
Church of St Patrick's, Belfast
14th July 1923 James O'Hanlon aged 20 Bachelor and labourer of Exchange Street son of James O'Hanlon Labourer and Martha Russell aged 17 spinster and spinner of 8 Portland Street daughter of Thomas Russell a labourer.
They may have had the following children:
Tommy O'Hanlon
Bridget O'Hanlon married John McAvoy
Robert O'Hanlon
James O'Hanlon
Kathleen O'Hanlon
Martha O'Hanlon married Franky Corr
I am sorry I do not have any birthdates.
James O'Hanlon senior may have been born around 1903-1904 and I have traced four birth entries all with a father called James! :'( I do not know which one is my James, so if there is anyone out there who can help I will be very very grateful.
Many thanks, Michelle

Hi,
You could try and match up with the 1911 census remembering that children were often named after grandparents.

Hi Michelle. I live in Belfast near the Dock's i know a lot of people there i have a book called the Half Bap & Little Italy.
Two of the Street in your message are in it Exchange Street & Portland Street also in my book there is a photo of a Franky Corr getting married could it be the same man.
The Half Bap & Little Italy is about 500 yards from Sailors Town thats the District were Dock Street is
In my 1949 Street Directory there is a O'Hanlon family living at (43 Dock Street New) not 43 Dock Street they are not the same street.
Sailors Town is where my wife was born 1954 i will see if i can get you some info on them.

Hi,
Thank you both very much for your reply, it is nice to hear from you.
I tried to get a researcher to look at the 1911 census for me (I'm in England), but she was reluctant to undertake the task without more info so I've left it for the time being.
Anthony, your information is exciting. I do wonder if that is the same Franky Corr!
Any help you can give will be gratefully received. Many thanks!
All the best,
Michelle

I am so happy to hear that you have located a relation of the O'Hanlon's! ;D. I would really love to know if Martha is still alive and if she knows anything of James O'Hanlon and his origins.
Thank you so much.

Hi,
I am still stuck with the O'Hanlon family and was wondering if there was anyone out there who knew someone who could search the parish records of St Patrick's for a small fee. I believe the records are still at the church.
If you know someone or could do it for me please send me a pm.
Regards, Michelle

Good Evening,
I have just found this string of posts and was very surprised. Martha Russell was my dad's sister, I have a very old photograph of her in Portland Street with neighbours Nellie and Rosie Kelly. Martha married Jimmy O'Hanlon. They had a boy called Joseph Christopher O'Hanlon who died at 10 months old in 1926, and is buried in my grandparents Thomas and Norah Russell's grave in Milltown. THe address given in 1926 is 21 Caroline Street.
I am the youngest child to Martha's brother Robert and am endeavouring to piece together the family history…help.
I know that at one point Jimmy lived around Ardoyne but since my elderly mother's death in 2009 I have lost my greatest source of information. Hope your search has progressed smoothly. Xavvi2754

Hi Xavvi,
I'm interested in the picture from Portland Street that you mention. My wife's family (Kellys) lived in Portland Street during the 1920s and had a children called Rose and Ellen, I wonder if they are the ones pictured with Martha Russell?
-
Hi I realize this is an old post but just stumbled upon it. Would really love to chat with Robert O’Hanlon’s youngest child and to confirm his wife’s name. Cheers
-
Looks like we made a mistake. I think we have confused Martha Russell and her brother Robert with Martha O'Hanlon and her brother Robert.
My wife Maria is the only child of Robert O'Hanlon and Alice McNally. For a minute we thought she had discovered a sibling she wasn't aware of
Thanks all

If anyone is still interested in this family, I'd love to chat - I'm the grandson of Joseph O'Hanlon, b. 1912 in Stanhope St - his father James O'Hanlon and Sarah Graham.
I've found out a little bit about the family history, but would love to know more/piece what I know together with those who know other bits.
Thanks!

Are these your gt grandparents in the 1911 Irish census?

That's right, Kiltaglassan.
Believe Ellen to have been conceived out of wedlock (she's baptised Graham).
John Henry was injured, and his younger sibling Eliza killed, in the Weaver Street bomb of 1922. I don't have any further info on him. I think Ellen married James McNeill in 1922.

Correct!
Ellen born illegitimate in 1901.

Your gt grandparents married a year later in 1902 in St Patrick's RC Chapel, Belfast.

Interesting, James O'Hanlon was a soldier.

Thanks,KG!
If you or anyone else watching can trace James O'Hanlon Sr back to Armagh, I'd be very grateful. He was a soldier at the time of marriage in 1902. I've found plausible army records, but no definite link. Father given as James in their wedding cert.
I have the wedding cert, and a lot more info on the Grahams (and Sarah's maternal side, the O'Neills/Owens), but nothing on the O'Hanlons until their marriage. Also lack a lot of knowledge beyond 1922 - some info on who my grandfather's brothers and sisters married (names include Pimley, Pedlow, Morrow), but not a lot beyond that.
Particularly interested if anyone knows about John Henry O'Hanlon, or more info on the Weaver Street bomb (found the post on treasonfelony blog already), in which Henry and Martha O'Hanlon were injured, and Eliza O'Hanlon killed.
Thanks KG, thanks all!
