Title: Stephens
Post by: erthomas on Friday 04 August 06 20:29 BST (UK)
Can anyone help me find Valentine and Sarah Stephens on the 1910 census?  I have a marriage for the two from LDS in 1906 and the births of 2 children approximately in 1911, sons Paul and Lloyd.  The family would have been in Ohio, possibly in Elk Township in Noble County.  It is also possible that they were in Monroe Co.  Any help on this would be appreciated.

Hi Erin

The IGI, incorrectly or not,  has them as STEVENS, and Sarah as nee: Sarah E SNYDER. Was looking for ages & birthplaces to help locate in 1910 - and found them first on 1930 as STEVENS -  According to this their son Paul wasn't born until abt 1915, but a son Sylvester was born bf 1910:

1930 - Salem Twp, Washing Cty, Ohio State
REF: Roll: 1887; Page: 5A; Enumeration District: 30
Head: Valentine STEVENS 56, first married at age 34. Occ: Teamster - Oil Field.
Wife: Sarah E STEVENS 54, first married at age 32.
Son: Sylvester STEVENS 21, single, (no occupation stated but YES - attending school)
Son: Marion L STEVENS 18, single, Laborer - Farm
Son: Paul STEVENS 15, (YES - attending school)
Valentine owns their home and they were all born in Ohio of Ohioan parents

I'm thinking son Marion L - is very possibly the son Lloyd you have record of - ie Marion Lloyd.

Here they are in 1910 - and it is......... interesting!!!   ;D

1910 - Flag Precinct, Noble Cty, Ohio State:
REF Roll: T624_1222; Page: 3A; Enumeration District: 113
Head: Valentine STEVENS 36, 2nd Marriage. Present marriage 5 yrs, Farmer - General Farm.
Wife: Sarah E STEVENS 33, 1st marriage, Present Marriage 5 years.
Son: Alva A STEVENS 14, Farm Laborer - Home Farm.
StepSon: Lawrence KEYLOR 11
Son: Leslie O STEVENS 9
Dau: Ina (Iva?) O STEVENS 6
Dau: Stella L STEVENS 3
Son: Sylvester STEVENS 11 months
All born Ohio of Ohioan parents.
Valentine owns the farm with a Mortgage.
According to the Census, Sarah has given birth to 6 children, all of whom are still living.

The enumerator visitation number for them was 29.
Next family visited was nr 30 - and I suspect (only!) that they are in the same household or Farm, and are Valentine's parents:

Head: Sylvester STEVENS age 64, married once for 40 yrs.
Wife: Lyddia STEVENS 58, married once for 40 yrs, has birthed 11 children, 6 still living.
Dau: Viola STEVENS 21, single, Occ: Housekeeper (to) Private Family
Dau: Sarah E STEVENS 16
Grandson: Edward E STEVENS 3
All born in Ohio; All with Ohioan parents except Lyddia's mother who was born Delaware.

I can see them in Salem Washington Cty Ohio in 1920 (and Valentine's suspected parents Sylvester & Lyddia are in Muskingum, Washington Cty, Ohio)' I'll  post them in a sec, as from what I can read, you don't already have it.....    ;D

Cheers

I also just noticed:
In 1930, a couple of households above Valentine & Sarah, is a farmer Lawrence D KEYLOR aged 31 with wife & chd - this could be the Step-son who was with them in 1910 - do you want full details of this and of him in 1920 if I can find him?

Cheers
