Hi
There is an Ada Elizabeth Ask registered in Goole (Yorkshire) in the September qtr of 1875 - this would have made her 16 at the time of the marriage! Do you think she might have lied about her age? I can't see another one on 1872/3.
The UK BMD indexes can be viewed free on Ancestry.co.uk.

Margate, Kent
1 Sandringham (something)
Ada Aske, serv, 17, General servant domestic, b. Hampshire Portsmouth

Charles's naval record can be downloaded from the National Archives website. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ It appears he was born 27 February 1866. It also appears their son Charles served in the Navy as well, date of birth 2 July 1896.

Hi Bill many thanks for your reply, i really appreciate it,you may be right about her, did she lie about her age? i notice on her marriage certificate that it was her father George Ask who was a chimney sweep, that signed on the certificate, & not her mother, makes me think her mother was dead? as my Gran married a Charles Denham & the witnesses on the marriage certificate were named Emily Denham & Peter Henry James Denham, if her Mum was dead was she being brought by this Denhams? this thought has justRegards occur ed to me what do you think? Hi Tati many thanks for your reply , it sounds as if you may be half right ?as on the marriage certificate Charles Edward Denham was a Stoker aboard the H.M Duke of Wellington 1892 the day of the marriage ,and age was 26,Ada my Gran was 19yrs old,so these ages you have i.e 34& 27yrs old . & they had a son Charles but ihave not heard of the George son?her dad,s name was George Ask as was on marriage certificate, did you get that info from 1901 census, because 19yrs in 1892 when she married , she would have been 27 or 28 what do you think?by the way what does do.stand for? Kind Regards Leslie Webster 11 St Hughes Place Salisbury Dns 5108 Adelaide South Australia

Hi Leslie,
Ages are not always 100% accurate on census. Then again, you have to consider the exact date. The census was taken on 31 March 1901.
do. ist short for 'ditto' (= same as above)
I do think the 1901 census must be right - there certainly isn't anything closer.
Whose father was a chimney sweep, then? Ada's?
Mother's names are not given on marriage certificates so unfortunately there's nothing we can conclude from that....

Hi All
I checked the GRO indexes for births for Ada ASK, there were none in 1873 or the 1st Qtr of 1874.
There were 2 under the surname ASH.
Ada ASH born 3rdQTR 1873 Birmingham
Ada Emily ASH born 2nd QTR 1873 Islington.
I notice on the 1901 census at the Parish of Portsmouth Workhouse
Rose ASKE widow aged 67
and on 1891 census at the Portsea Island Union Workhouse is a
Rosina ASK widow aged 55
Could this lady be Ada's mother.
The Peter & Emily DENHAM who witnessed the marriage appear to be Charles' brother & sister-in-law. They didn't have anyone other than their children living with them on the 1891 census.
Was Ada's father deceased when she got married? She was under age, who gave permission for the marriage?

Hi Leslie
The fact that her mother did not sign the marriage certificate is not really significant. The witnesses might have been friends, other members of the family, or even one of the church wardens - anybody will do. It might be that her mother could not write - not at all unusual in those days - and didn't want to sign with a cross!
