Hi,
Can anyone help? I'm trying to find a Fanny (Frances) CROSSKEY in Hand Cross in abt 1808. I think she's possibly got siblings Caroline, Clark & William. If anyone can help it'd be fantastic - this is a real dead end for me !

Hello - I've just seen this post, and as it's a few years old I wondered if you'd got any further with your search? I ask because I have an ancestor called Clark Crosskey (b. c. 1812, Rye, Sussex) and haven't been able to discover his birth or parentage.

Great to hear from you - but....NO! i've got no further I'm afraid :( I'm convinced she is Clarks sister but have never found proof of any of them.

If you think Caroline Crosskey could be a link, try Genes Reunited. Caroline is in the family tree of Stephen ******* who has her born Handcross 1810. Stephen also lists Clark (born Rye 1811) as a family interest.
Also on Genes is a Christopher ****** who lists a Fanny Crosskey (born Cuckfield district c1809) in his ancestry.
Hopefully, contacting either of those and pooling information could help you find an exit from your dead end.
The link with Rye seems to be pretty sound for in the 1851 Rye census, William (born 1806) gives his birthplace as Slaugham, which can also be considered as Handcross.

Crosskeys of Rye are also mentioned in the 1823 Pigot's Directory of Sussex.
Included are John Crosskey, Toy Dealer of Rye, John Crosskey, Turner & Chair Maker of Rye, Wm. Crosskey, Hatter of Rye, Wm. Crosskey, Tailor & Draper & Slopseller(?) of Rye.
The following has no proven basis, especially as the family seemed to put down permanent roots in Rye in just over a decade, but it may nevertheless be worth consideration.
Noting that Clark Crosskey was also a chairmaker, and William a hatter. If the family were originally "Bodgers" (makers of rustic chairs and straw bonnets) they may have once lived an almost gypsy lifestyle travelling from woodland to woodland with no permanent abode. If so, you may be fortunate and find more about their origins from a website that specialises in recording the movements of travelling people.
