Title: McGill's of Greenock
Post by: Jimbo of Canada on Wednesday 02 August 06 17:56 BST (UK)
I am searching for info on my great grandfather, WILLIAM MCGILL b. 1848,  his father William McGill b. Greenock c. 1822, his wife Ann (no maiden name) and a baby brother (name unknown) born in 1851 in Greenock.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The I.G.I. lists the marriage of William McGill and Mary McFie on 30 May 1812 in the West or Old Parish, Greenock.
In addition to their son William (bap. 7 Jul 1822, West or Old Parish), they had:
Elizabeth bap. 31 Oct 1815
Mary bap. 13 Jul 1818
They were also baptised West or Old Parish.

Thank you very much for this new info.
I had info that my great great grandfather was born approx. 1822. I didn't know he had  2 sisters and I didn't have his parents names.
I am still trying to find William's (1848) brother's name.   Apparently he was 10 days old at the time of the 1851 census but not named.
William (1848) emigrated to Ontario Canada sometime between  1851 and 1871 ( I don't know if he came by himself when older,or with his parents and brother) and married Mary Weir Nolan in 1888.  I have all the info on him personally, over here but almost nothing of him in Greenock.

The William McGill on the 1881 census may be a relative down the line somewhere but he is not my William as he was living in Ontario as of 1871.

Again, thank you both for your help,

Jim

Update on William McGill:
My great grandfather William McGill b. 1848 in Tipperary Ireland and his 2 brothers: P. or D. McGill b. 1851 Greenock, (10 days before the 1851 census was taken), and I. or J. McGill b. 1854 Greenock, were listed on the 1861 Greenock census at a "ragged school". Only initials were used. Apparently there father, William McGill b.1822, was in a poorhouse at the same time on the census. Their mother, Ann McGill (maiden name unknown, possibly Dowden) was not on the 1861 census. I wonder if she had died at or soon after the birth of their last son or was in a poorhouse as well.

Is their any way to find out the actual names and birthdates of the 2 brothers and Ann not knowing their actual names?
Is it possible to find a poor relief application for William McGill probably made sometime between 1854 and 1861?

I know that William (1848) emigrated to Canada sometime between 1870 and 1871 as he is listed on the 1871 census in Lanark County, Ontario.

What i don't know is:

Did his brothers come with him or stay behind and what happened to them ?
What happened to his father William ?
What was Ann's maiden name and did she die and if so, when and where?

If anyone can help with this it would be very appreciated.

As far as I know thr  poor relief  records (for Greenock) were lost at some point in time -  this was confirmed by the historian of the Watt Library

weemary,

Thank you for the info. This would probably be the only way I could get the answers to my questions so I guess I may be out of luck trying to find the boys names.

Hi Jimbo

Have you tried contacting the Watt Library and checking what records are kept, if any, for the Greenock Industrial School?

From another site, with a similar query:

I contacted the James Watt Library in Greenock, who gave me the following information taken from the Greenock Post Office Directory of 1891 and is the entry is headed

Greenock Ragged School Association:
It is the object of the Association to reclaim the neglected and destitute children of Greenock by affording them the benefit of a good common and Christian education, and training them to the habilts of regular industry so as to enable them to earn an honest livliehood and fit them for the duties of life.
The plan upon which the school is conducted is as follows: The children receive an allowance of food for their daily support; are instructed in reading, writing and arithmetic; trained to industry by employing them daily in such work as is suited to their years; and taught the truths of the Gospel, making the children receive suitable religious teaching.

Hi Monica And Joe,

Thanks for the help, as this is a real Brickwall.

I will try to contact the Watt Library and find out if they have poor relief applications for the period 1851 to 1861.
On the 1851 census it is showing Elizabeth as 43 but she was apparently born around Oct. 31, 1815.
Also, Where is Archibald at the time of the census?

On the 1861 census, Ann is 44 but on the 1851 census she is 23 and William is 29 as he was born in 1822.  William is in a poorhouse on the 1861 census and the 3 boys are in a ragged school at the same time.
It's William's poor relief application I really need to get all the relevant info on him, Ann and the 3 boys.

I have a copy of the 1851 census for William and Mary and the 2 boys thanks to the Paisley Town Council.

Since Elizabeth doesn't appear on the 1861 census of Greenock , I wonder if she had moved away or emigrated to possibly Canada possibly giving the reason young William moves to Canada Then again, where is Archibald?

Also, where is William and Mary's daughter Mary who was bapt. July 13, 1818 ?

It looks like William Sr. has died by 1851 if Mary is now the head of the family. I haven't been able to find Mary on the 1861 census either so she may have died as well by now. Therefore it is possible they may be buried in a Greenock cemetery. This could be another search in the making.

Isn't genealogy fun?

Jim

Jim the Watt library has all the BMD  taken from the newspaper  -  they  have all been indexed from 1843 onwards -  if your family's births or burials appeared in the newspaper it would have been indexed

Thanks again,

Hi Jim
click on the relevant name link and it will take you to the BMD's as they appeared in the Greenock Telegraph
hope it helps, although there are quite a few McGills on there, not all families had the money to put BMD's in the paper,
Elaine
