I'm looking for information on Caroline and John Tindall. I believe Caroline's name was Marshall. I have found them on 1881 census with 3 children, they were probably both born around 1850 and were possibly married around 1874/5 ish. They lived in Scarborough at the time of the 1881 census.

Yes, that is a family name - so looking at previous message maybe William's initial was K for Kingston? I didn't know when or where William Kingston died.
Thank you very much
-
It's all good news - there is an elderley uncle who is sitting on a load of certificates and won't pass them all thouigh it isn't his family and he insisted the Tindalls were all from Sunderland!!Knew he was wrong - my husband's family but I did listen when his gran talked.
-

According to 1851, they were all born at Scarborough too
(both William and Ellen are age 54 in 1851. The IGI has a possible christening for Ann in Scarborough)

Interested in details?

Wouldn't dream of telling you to shut up Tati - it's going to cost a fortune for all the certificates but can't wait to tell uncle he was wromg, wrong , wrong!

Fantastic, Tati! It is Caroline Marshall I'm most interested in - my eldest daughter is named after husband's mum who was named after her great grandma Caroline Marshall! Caroline married a Tindall and one of her daughters was Daisy Tindall who was my husband's gran. You have saved me a lot of money but more important to me is time - I really struggle. I did find Caroline on I think it was 1881 census with 3 children, youngest was Kate, Daisy as yet not born - but can't find it again. Only sendingfor certificates I'd really like to have.

Thank you so much, :D

John Tindall born c.1760 m. Isabella before 1786. Children William born 1786 and Isabella born 1793

Hi Cris
I was very interested to see your posting about Rachel APPLEBY, daughter of John and Mary and wife of George MARSHALL.
I am tracing the victims of the Sheffield Flood [12th March 1864] and one of the victims was Mary APPLEBY nee MARSHALL who was the wife of Cowton APPLEBY. Her son John Cowton APPLEBY and her Grand Daighter Mary APPLEBY also drowned.
Cowton too was born to John and Mary although the jury is still out as to whether it was Mary Cowton or Mary Harrison - long story here!!
I would be interested in making contact with you to see if you have traced Rachel's parents and I will happily pass on details that I have about the family.
Hope to hear from you

Hi, I looked at St. Mary,s Scarborough PR today I,m sure I saw the name Tindall
I,m going again Wed , can I be of help
Best Wishes Clive
-
Hi Clive - loads of Tindalls in Scarborough, I think there is even a book about them - hoping to get to visit one day. They were Quakers and I'd love to find more infoon the family.
Karen - I will get back to you on the Appleby's - I seem to have mislaid my file on them!
Chris
-
I have read a copy of the book in private hands. It takes the Tindalls in Scarborough back to the 1400s, which would explain why the name is common by the late 1700s. The reason for the book is that they were very important as a ship building family in Scarborough.
I made a note of the dates and names but not the details of the story, if you are interested?
-
Penndennis that would be fantastic - I'd love a copy of the book but don't suppose you know if that is possible?
Chris
-
I've spent the last hour and a half trying to get the whole thing down, and posted it, but for some reason it hasn't turned up yet. If it 's not here by lunchtime I'll try again.
-
Would my email address be any help? I do appreciate the trouble you are going to, my husband's gran was a Tindall.
Chris
-
I'll try again, because there are a few people following the discussion who may want the info. If that fails I'll ask for your e-mail and send it straight to you.
Thanks
Bill

Attempt the third.
My connection with the Tindalls is Isabella who married Edward Harris. I did not make notes from the book for the Tindalls after that date. I don't know at what point you will be able to establish a link. I might be able to recontact the original source, if you can't make a connection.
The book is a substantial and elderly hardback so copying isn't possible. I suppose theoretically a reprint could be done, but it would be expensive.
If I only show a year then this should be read as approximate. I have not given all the details of spouse ancestors. I’ll start from Isabella and work backwards
Isabella Tindall (9 Aug 1791 - 20 Jul 1868) married (on 12 Oct 1814) Edward Harris (1787-1852)
-------------------------------------- The book -----------------------------------
Her father
John Tindall (27 Feb 1755 - 1809) married Isabella MacIver (1755 - 1836)
His father
John Tindall (28 Oct 1722 – 1773) married (in 1745) Jane Dowker (1725 – 1802)
His father
James Tindall (28 Feb 1688 – 1767) married Ann Hall (1690 - ?)
His father
John Tindall (1645 – 1698) married ? Cockerill (1660 - ?)
His father
John Tindall (1604 – 1675) married Mary Blackwell. This man is recorded as from North Grimston (my comment, probably the one who started up in Scarborough).
His father
John Tindall (1580 – 1640) married Margaret Simpson (1580 - ?). He is also North Grimston
His father
Ralph Tindall (1550 – 1605) married ? Foster (1560 - ?). He is recorded as Yorkshire.
His father
Thomas Tyndall (note change in spelling) (1537 – bef 1574) married Joan(?) Harrington. He is from Danby Wiske. (My comment, either his birth or that of his son above or both must be the wrong date)
His father
James Tyndale (1510 – 1557) married Alice Culdwell (1521 - ?). He is recorded simply as North East England.
His father
John Tyndale (1480 - ?) married Emote Thornton (1490 – 1554)

I was given information from someone who has researched the family back to about 1100 and owning castles in Northumberland but I haven't checked any of that out. All the Tindalls I found belonged Scarborough.
Chris
-
Just checked my notes and I have John Tindale died in 1675 as starting up the Shipbuilding in Scarborough, Born North Grimston and buried there. I really must spend some time writing up these notes and bringing trees up to date.
Chris
-
We're obviously both looking at the same family anyway.
Bill
-
So it seems Bill, have you looked at the Tindale- Munch tree at all?
I have pics of Tindalls mainly of Caroline and John's family but also one of Caroline Marshall and am willing to share any info if you there is anything you'd like to know
Chris
-
Thanks for the offer. At the moment we're concentrating on direct line only, and even that is expanding so much that it is difficult to keep track! It would be interesting to know at what points our lines divide.
To reciprocate, I've contacted the man with the book, to see whether he can find anything else. If you want the Harrises (Edward Harris married Isabella Tyndall) I'll be happy to pass them across.
I have a tree on OneGreatFamily.com if you're ever on that site, and another on Friends Reunited.

Scarborough has a Tindall Street. No doubt named after the family of Tindall who were prominent in the town for years. Exeter University site has detailsof their shipbuilding business in 1700s
-
Thanks Yorky. As you say, almost certainly named after the family. By coincidence my m-in-law lives near Exeter so I may try and get her to follow up the Uni link.
-
Thank you Yorky - and Pendennis, I'd be interested to know if you find anything more out. I can't recall where it is you live but in a few weeks we shall be moving to North Yorkshire and we will be visiting Scarborough to see what we can find there so if there is anything in particular I can help with in Scarborough please say
Chris
-
Hi i have a copy of the Tindalls of scarbourough.printed 1927 for private use.are you interested?
-
Hi
