Title: Sth Aust request for RICHARDS
Post by: cristobel on Saturday 29 July 06 06:07 BST (UK)
Hello
I have three brothers born in SA, to William Thomas RICHARDS and wife Jessie

Walter Eric  b 10 April 1990
Harold Ellis b 22 May 1898 and died Nov 1898
Maxwell Ellis b 6 April 1907

I'm wondering if someone could lookup and see if the two surviving brothers married, died etc.  Any details would be appreciated.  Thanks all.
Chris

Hi Chris
Our National Archives site holding service histories shows Maxwell Ellis correlating birth date] b. WAyville SA Next of Kin is KATHELEEN RICHARDS
So  looks like he married a Katheleen [odd spelling]
This history is for WW2
There is also a Eric Walter  [fully digitised], but birthdate and birth place are not yours.

Hello Jenn & Sue
Thanks very much for your help.

I will check the National Archives site for the war records for Maxwell Ellis RICHARDS, Sue. (and also have a peek at Walter Eric)

I have the siblings for William Thomas RICHARDS, Jenn, so now I need some other kind soul to help out with marriages etc.

Many thanks, Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris,

Couldn't see marriages for Walter or Maxwell on the S.A. marriage Index 1917-1937. There was a marriage for one Walter Richards, but age was a few years out.

regards,

Magoo

Hello Magoo,

Thanks magoo.
OK now I'll go on and try to find when they died & where they are buried.  The think the SA death indexes only go up to 1915, so perhaps someone is able to access other information, but I will browse on some cemetery sites and hopefully it will turn up something for me.

Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris,
The other NAA entry for Richards is ACTUALLY
Eric Walter not Walter Eric [see my posting]
Eerily similar, but just not quite it.  On digitised see
1889 crossed out to be 1890 .  August not April etc.

Hi
I've looked at Maxwell Ellis RICHARDS war record and now  need to find his marriage to Katheleen.   SA marriage indexes finish at 1937,  so his marriage was between 1937 & 1941 when he enlisted.

The parents of Maxwell and Walter RICHARDS (William & Jessie/Edna) are buried at West Terrace, so its possible the sons are there too.  Will try & find those details somehow.  I dont think West Tce is online.
Thanks, Chris

Cristobel you may have found the information you were seeking as your request was three years ago....but in case you haven't

http://www.saghs.org.au/graves.htm
Newspaper Deaths, Funerals, Lest We Forget & Memorials

Surname: RICHARDS
Given name(s): Maxwell Ellis
Source date: A 1983

You can purchase a copy of the newspaper announcement from SAGHS - a link to a downloadable request from on the url above.

Burial record
RICHARDS, Maxwell Ellis
Cemetery Carinya Gardens Cemetery - Mount Gambier
Section    Eucalypt 4
Plot/Grave/Niche    Allotment A, Row 3-4
Date of Death    26 Aug 1983
Age at Death    76 years
Grave Depth    2.13m (7')

The website link given by Sylvia has me a bit puzzled. I couldn't see any reference to Jessie Edna HILLMAN.  Perhaps I didn't search thoroughly enough :-\

Cheers
Cando

Hi Cando & Sylvia,
Yes, since that time I had found 1983 as year of death for Maxwell Ellis RICHARDS.

The Mt Gambier burial details are a bonus.   :D   Thankyou.

I too, had a quick look at the link provided by Sylvia, but couldn't spot Jessie Hillman.  Thanks though, Sylvia - must do a more thorough look.

Cheers, Chris

Hello tasmania1962,
Sampson Richards is not a common name.  My Sampson and Amelia Richards came from Cornwall to South Aust where they had 8 children -  4 of the children died in infancy and as far as I can tell, the rest, Sampson Jnr, Elizabeth, William Thomas and John stayed in SA.  Does any of this fit in with the Sampson Richards in your tree?
Cheers, Chris.
