Hello,
I am looking for information on the above gentleman, Sir Charles E. NIGHTINGALE of Cambridgeshire.
I have the marriage entry from the OPR of his granddaughter:
"On June 13 1866, at the Church of Notre Dame, Montreal, Canada East, by the Rev. V. Sorim, Mr. Francis Duquet, of Montreal, to Louisa Maria, daughter of Ernest Nightingale, Esq., and granddaughter of the late Sir Charles E. Nightingale, Bart., formerly of Kneesworth Hall, Cambridgeshire, England."
Firstly, where in Cambridgeshire was Kneesworth Hall?
Any information would be gratefully appreciated including census entries which hopefully would list his wife and children. I have a number of NIGHTINGALEs in my Montreal family tree with little information. Many of them appear to be of British origin.

To Suzard & Liverpool Annie,
I am very thankful for the information you both sent. Like so many of us involved in genealogy I am also interested in genealogical locations and attempt to find out as much information I can regarding my ancestors. I have not yet had the opportunity to digest the information you sent but, #1, I will look up the location on my M/S Autoroute software and pinpoint the location exactly along with a map and study the balance of this interesting facts sent. This is my first venture into the County of Cambridgeshire.
I realize these aren't your ancestors, but I found something else last evening on Sir Charles which I would like to share with you and other listers.

Editor: Edmund Burke
At Bath, (July, 1843) aged, 59, Sir Charles Ethelstone Nightingale, the seventh Bart., of Newport Pond, Essex (1628).
He was born Nov. 1, 1784, the second but eldest surviving son of Sir Edward, the sixth Baronet, by Eleanor, daughter and heiress of his uncle, Robert Nightingale, esq., of Kneesworth Hall, Cambrideshire. He succeeded his father, Dec. 4, 1804. Sir Charles Nightingale formerly resided at Kneesworth Hall, Cambridgeshire, but had lately dwelt entirely at Bath. He was constantly attended by Dr. Greville, to whom he left the whole of his property, overlooking Lady Nightingale and his children, and in consequence, some suspicions were raised respecting the cause of his death.
Dr. Greville undertook to have the body examined by any medical gentleman, but some dispute ensuing with the family, the doctor sealed the doors of the room and thus left an inquest as the only means of making such an examination. Mr. Thomas Nightingale, a son of the deceased, swore to his suspicion from the appearance of the body after death, that his father had been poisoned by the administration of arsenic. Dr. Greville deposed to having attended the deceased professionally for several years.
For the last four months he had been in a variable state of health; his last illness had continued nearly five weeks and his death was occasioned by a complication of maladies, dropsy being superinduced.
Dr. Lambert deposed that he was called to attend the deceased and found him vomiting. Deceased's (sic, vomit) was not the coffee-ground vomiting which is symptomatic of the last stages of organic disease, but appeared to be the inflammatory action of the stomach which Dr. Abercromby and M. Louis state never take place except in cases of acrid poison. The stomach was more distended than in ordinary cases. He felt bound to state that these circumstances created great suspicion in his mind.
An adjournment of the inquest took place and Mr. Field, surgeon, having in the interim made a post mortem examination of the body then gave it as his decided opinion that no arsenic had been taken or administered. The jury then consulted for a short time and returned the following verdict ---- "That the deceased died of haematemsis, by the the visitation of God."
Sir Charles married in 1805 to his German cousin, Maria, only daughter of Thomas Lacy Dickenson of West Retford, county Nottingham, esq., by whom he had issue six sons and one daughter.
Once again, thank you so much! I really appreciate it! :)

Wow Dorothy ! That's great !! :)
What a lot of information you have there ..... ! I love stuff like that .... and how intriguing they thought the doctor did it !! :o
I'm very pleased you're on a roll now .... I'll do some more looking and post what I can find !

Hi Annie,
Sounds like an Agatha Christie novel, doesn't it! :)
I'll gladly take any other information that's out there.
Many thanks!

Hi Dorothy! What a neat story you have going here.
The Nightingales are on the IGI in Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire (location of Kneesworth Hall). There are MANY baptisms and marriages - they seemed to have had large families back for several generations...
According to the IGI, Charles Ethelstone Nightingale married Maria Dickonson on 09 Dec 1805 in West Retford, Nottinghamshire.
They had 6 children christened at Bassingbourn:
Charles (christened 1809)
Thomas (1810)
Eleanor (1811)
Edward (same day in 1811 - twins?)
George Manby (1812)
Manly (1813)
(Charles Ethelstone's baptism and those of all his siblings are there too. )
And 4 more christened at Royston, Hertfordshire (3 mi from Bassingbourn):
Gamaliel (1820) (family name)
Alfred (same day in 1820)
Ernest (1821) - father of your Louis Maria?
unnamed child (1822)
There must have been more in between, but I do not see them.
However, I cannot find any of these people on the census! I have been searching the 1841 and 1851 to no avail. They must be somewhere! Charles Ethelstone must be on the 1841, since he died in 1843, but I cannot find him. ???

Hi Neighbour! :)
Usually the IGI is one of the first places I check but in this case, I never gave it a thought. However, I didn't know about Bassingbourn until yesterday. I will definitely have a look.
Ernest (1821) - father of your Louis Maria? You bet - thank you so much!
Strange this Nightingale family does not appear on the various censuses. Thank you for trying.
This heat wave is a killer - absolutely hate it!
Dorothy
-
Hi Dorothy,
I fully agree with you on this heat! Today in particular is just so sticky, I can't wait for it to be over.
No more luck on the census - Nightingale is actually a very popular name, much to my surprise, and since they all have fairly common first names it is proving difficult. Most of the people I'm finding seem to be labourers and such - you'd think a titled family would be easy to spot, but... Maybe since they had sold their estate in the early 1800s they have come down a bit in station...
Do you know when Louisa's family arrived in Canada. Did Ernest come with his whole family or was it just Louisa?

Hi Dorothy !
I'm wondering if you could ask Keith Sherwood on this board - for a look-up the next time he goes to Shire Hall !! - Bedfordshire Boy and a few others are very knowledgable - so I hope they pick this up !!
Annie :) :)

Hi Annie,
This would be just great if Keith or someone else would do this for me! I haven't come across Keith Sherwood's name yet. As you mentioned, I hope this is picked up. Any suggestions how to go about this?

Hello,
I doubt that my Charles Nightingale nor his descendants ever sang in Barclay Square as he lived at Kneesworth Hall in Cambridge. :( However, his ancestry is important to me.
A little 'bird' from Liverpool mentioned that some of you visit Shire Hall from time to time. As it is very difficult for a Canadian like me to visit there, would there be a kind soul on this list who would be willing to find some information on Charles and his descendants for me? Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi, Dorothy, I think you wanted to post that message on another board!?
Found you on a "moved topic" earlier....
I imagine you have already found this...Edwards marriage Eleanor Ethelstone
August 28th, 1724 Saint Luke, Chelsea, London on the I.G.I....
There are also many children born to this couple as well...although they need to perhaps be sorted from other Edwards & Eleanors...all extracted files...there are some pedigree listings also...
More on Ethelston side

Dorothy, you may want to peek into the 1851 census while it's free, there are only 2 born Eng, but they are in York... but you may find other familiar names...

Hi J.J.
Yes, they are gems of genealogy. However, I cannot connect the later ones to my family. One of my maternal gt. aunts married a Walter Nightingale in Montreal in 1918. His father was a William Nightingale but I have no ancestry on this William. Will just have to continue working on this.
Many thanks for the websites. I haven't had a chance yet to review them all but I have written Karen Ethelston and will check out the balance tomorrow.
I become really rattled on this site as to where to post my messages. A few of them have been moved.
Thank you so much for Edward's marriage to Eleanor Ethelstone - I didn't have this. This 1724 date fits in nicely with their approximate dates of births. So far I show only 4 children born to Edward and Eleanor - will check out the IGI.
Many thanks for your help.

Hi there, this is how my line goes - it starts in Essex:
John Nightingale had son William Nightingale who died in 1571.
William married Gonar Thurgood.
They had Geoffrey (1550) who married Catherine Clamps (I have a picture of them).
Geoffrey and Catherine had Sir Thomas - 1st Baronet - High Sherriff of Essex.
His first wife was Millicent Clerke (I have a direct line of her family traced back to 980 - fascinating) and they had Thomas in Bassingbourn in 1609.
Thomas married Jane Ventris and they had Robert in Whittlesford in 1639.
Robert married Constantia Newlin and they had Granado in Hauxton (he eventually owned plantations in Barbados).
Granado married Ann Paine and they had Joseph in Toft.
Joseph married Hannah Ivett and they had John in 1755.
John married Elizabeth Thurlborn and they had John in 1797.
He married Sarah Asplen and they had John 1824 who married Eliza Hickman.
They had James George who married Mary Ann Thorp.
They had Harry.
Harry didn't marry Alice Maud Ranscombe (she was previously married) and they had my precious Nan who is 96 years old - Cynthia Leah May Nightingale.
In amongst that lot are hundreds more children, branches off, marriage dates, death dates, birth dates - loads but obviously I have just summarised my direct line. Also, it is important to point out that my later ancestors seem to have been the poorer ones so probably 3rd or 4th children of an esteemed couple - you know, 1st inherits, second in army, third to church...... that's how it used to be.
Would love to know more about your line too.
Kate

All I can say is ..... wow !!
Kate ... you really have a good line there !! ;D
I hope you and Dorothy can find a connection !

Hi all,
I can't believe it....I've actually found someone else related to the Nightingale Baronetcy....and this after trawling the net for about 8 years....!
If I get 10 minutes, I'll post my line.....
I really must update my family tree I was working on (until about 3 years ago, when my business took over my priorities !).
regards
Tim O'Malley
Grandmother: Lilian Bertha PRESSLAND, dau. of Louisa Maitland ADDISON and her 2nd husband, Herbert Caleb PRESSLAND.
L.M ADDISON was the 1st wife of Edward Henry NIGHTINGALE, by whom she had a son Edward Manners NIGHTINGALE (who subsequently inherited the Baronetcy making him the 14th Baron and to whom "my" grand-mother was his younger half-sister). This means I'm not in the direct bloodline of the NIGHTINGALES, but it's an interest all the same... :)
E.H. Nightingale (who died young, age 39, in 1895, after 8 yrs of marriage) was the son of Henry Dickonson NIGHTINGALE, who was the son of Charles NIGHTINGALE, who was son of Charles Ethelston NIGHTINGALE, which is where I link to the OP.
BTW: Most of the info I have on the NIGHTINGALE's, I got from their entry in Who's Who....but there are some distinct differences between some of the info posted on this thread and the Who's Who entries...I'll have to refer back to it and see if the commanality of first names used by the family might have caused errors to crop up.
Edit: There's a useful NIGHTINGALE family tree here:

and the lineage of the Baronetcy is here (some way down the page!!):

Hello everyone.
I realise I'm 9 years too late to reply to this thread, however, I couldn't resist not connecting with other Nightingales from around the world in regards to the Nightingale Baronetcy. To introduce myself, I'm Edward (Nightingale) and I have a direct lineage to Sir Thomas Nightingale (1st Baronet) and currently in line to be the 20th Baronet. I am also based in the UK, though quite away from Knessworth Hall. When I get a chance I will post my lineage as it is very rich but as the family dates back to the 14th century it may take a while. I am in the mean time putting together a family tree on PDF form so if anyone is interested in having a copy please let me know and I will e-mail it to you.
I hope to hear from some of you soon.
Edward

Also found this thread recently. The Nightingale line in my family goes back to the 1600's, with roots in both Australia, England and New Zealand.
-
I know this discussion is on the older side, but hoping someone might come across it.
My family descends from the Nightingale's in Barbados. I understand that Grenado Nightingale might have had properties there. I'm trying to understand if they connect with the Nightingale Baronetcy at all. The family names of Grenado and Gamaliel stand out, and were used repeatedly throughout the generations.
My line starts with:
- Elizabeth Jane Nightingale - b. 1790 in Barbados to Nathaniel Nightingale and Ann Evanson, m. 1808 to Nicholas Evanson in Barbados, d. Unknown.
- Nathaniel Nightingale - b. 1761 in Barbados to Gamaliel Nightingale and Frances LNUK, m. 1789 in Barbados to Ann Evanson, d. unknown
- Gamaliel Nightingale - b. 1745 in St. Philip Barbados to Grenada/Grenado Nightingale and Mary Burton, m. about 1759 to Frances, d. Unknown
- Grenada/Grenado Nightingale (spelling varies on docs) - b. 1706, Christchurch Barbados to Capt. Nathaniel Nightingale and Catherine Ragg, m. 1732 Barbados to Mary Burton, d. Unknown
- Capt. Nathaniel Nightingale - b. 1676 or 1677 in Barbados to Granado/Granader (sp. varies) Nightingale and Susannah, m. 1698 Barbados to Catherine Ragg, d. 1736 Barbados
- Granado/Grenader Nightingale - b. circa 1650 location unknown to Nathaniel Nightingale and Elizabeth Richardson, supposedly. I am not confident where I got those names and can no longer find the documentation, so they could be incorrect! m. about 1670 to Priscilla Webb who died in 1676, 2nd wife Susannah m. about 1676 (assumed since wife died in Jan. that year, and Nathaniel Nightingale was born in January of 1677. Not a long mourning period, but he had 3 very young sons from the first marriage... life goes on I guess!)
That is as far as I was able to trace, and it was very early on in my genealogy career, so my documentation is terrible. I'm going back and filling in the gaps, which raised the question for me. Someone on another forum pointed out the connection to the baronetcy, which I'd never heard of. The names of Gamaliel and Grenado are particularly unique, so I wondered how I might find out if there is in fact a connection.
Thanks in advance for any assistance or insight anyone can provide!!!
