Title: 1841 or 1851 census look up
Post by: shelagh2 on Tuesday 25 July 06 17:30 BST (UK)
I am looking for information on the Cooper family, parents Francis and Jane

Their son Thomas was born in Ripley in 1823 and I have the parents names from the IGI , and also Francis from Thomas' marriage cert. At the time of this marriage in 1848 Francis was an Overseer, and Thomas lived in Cheetham.
I had tried on the W Riding site to find the parents but with no luck so would be interested if anyone can see them in Lancashire. The reason for looking in Lancashire is that Thomas married Ann Tomlinson in Manchester in 1848.

I'm afraid I don't know Francis and Jane's ages (in 1841). They may even be on later census returns

I would like to confirm Thomas' parents names, and find their years of birth and birth places if possible

Regards

Shelagh

Hi Shelagh,

I have been puzzling over Janes place of birth and although it looks like Harswith I suspect it is possibly Hartwith which is four miles west of Ripley.

HTH,

All this info has got me thinking about my research again !!!

I would also be interested in Ann's parents. She was a Tomlinson . On the marriage cert (1848) she is 20 ( and 23 on the 1851 census you gave me)  her father is Peter a Joiner.
there is an Ann christened at Cathedral Manchester in 1828 on the IGI giving  parents as Peter and Alice and her residence is Boundary street, Hulme

Mo,

Thanks again for the info.

Shelagh

If anyone can see the 1851 census that would give me more info re Peter and Alice's birth.

However I guess I've got back as far as I can.
Does anyone know how to go back further, with any degree of confidence.

Hi Shelagh,
I was idly looking for Francis Cooper's birth (not successfully) when I found your posts.
He was a farmer in Ripley and married Jane Skaife in Ripon in 1816. That's all I know about him. Jane was baptised in 1794 to Robert and Mary at Hampsthwaite near Harrogate. There is a reasonably well-authenticated line of Skaifes in the area going back as far as 1691 (all in the IGI).
My interest is in Thomas Cooper - I still don't know when he died - and his  daughters Ann Eliza and Hannah Skaife. The former married my G Grandfather and lived in Glasgow. Her sister took her place when she died.
Hope this is useful if you don't already know it.
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

sorry I didn't spot your reply earlier.

I  am descended from Thomas Cooper and Ann Tomlinson via their daughter Mary Ellen Cooper.

She  moved to glasgow after her first husband died (1883) and  I always wondered why. but  presumably  she moved there because her only family was her sisters and they were there.

Since my original post here I have quite a bit about Thomas and also the Skaife's which I will dig out for you and send in a few days

I'll be in touch

Shelagh

And the move to Glasgow also coincided with her sister's death!
My mother, who lived in Pollokshields, remembers her (she was known as Polly) living in Shawlands so the two sisters must have exchanged visits.
What I have on the Skaifes/Coopers is at http://windhillorigins.co.uk/familyhistory_files/skaife/index.htm.
Funnily enough, I visited Hampsthwaite at the weekend to see what it is like.
Will look forward to an exchange of info.
