Title: Grandads WW1 History. Help needed.
Post by: dudjac on Tuesday 25 July 06 12:16 BST (UK)
Hi.  Could someone please point me in the right direction?
My grandfather volunteered  for the WW1 conflict  At some stage he was captured and was a p.o.w.  He returned home after the war. Thats about all I know.  I understand he may have been awarded the war medal but on 'archives' there are six people with the same name. Apparently war cards do not give give dob's
nor places of birth so any of these cards could be him.
After the war he became a builder and two of the houses he built were named Courtrai and Galliope, and still are today. I know courtrai was a famous battle in WW1 but Galliope I'm not so sure. There was an HMS Galliope... did this vessel carry him overseas?
Any help appreciated.  Dud.

Hi Dud

Your first action should be to post everything you know about him here ;D ;D ;D

Ideally we want to establish his Regiment and Number so search for his Medal Index Card at The National Archives to see if you can make a match.

They also publish a Research Guide for POW's which maybe of interest to you.  Here is the link

Hi Wendi.
Many thanks for your reply.  My knowledge of him is somewhat limited.
His name was Mark JACOBS.  He was born in Parkstone, Dorset 16th August 1884. When he joined up in about 1914-15 he was living in Camberley, Surrey. The info regarding his joining up
comes from my mother (aged 95). All she can remember is that he joined up, was captured, and came home.  As I said previously he was a bricklayer by trade and on returning from the war he started his own building firm.  He seemed to love naming places after his earlier years.  The drive in which he built two houses called Courtrai and Galliope  (both I assume after his war experiences) was called Parkstone Drive after his home town as a child.  I can also recall a picture he had hanging on the wall of  his dining room (I'm going back to about 1945 now) which was called Goodbye my old friend by Matania. This depicts a soldier cradling the head of his dying horse. ( can be seened on www.directart.co.uk/mall/more.php?ProdID=10408   )  Was he
conected with horses I wonder?
Thats all I know about his career in the army.  Not a lot is it??

Dud.

No it's not, but it's a start.

BTW - lucky to have your Mom, 95, WONDERFUL, my respects to her.

Do you have any WW1 photo of him?  Where are his medals?

There are only 6 Mark Jacobs with Campaign Medals, so presumably he was to be one of them.

All we have to do is work out a way of identifying which one  ::)

another thought

of the 6 soldiers listed, only the first ( the Army Service Corps) soldier's work is directly connected to horses  ( hore transport to be exact)

Hi All.

Many thanks for your replies.
The name of the house is definitely Galliope. ( I was born next door)
No idea as to where any medals are. None of his family are alive.
No WW! photos of him either.
Not a lot to go on is it?  Is there anywhere I could obtain a service record?

Looking at the 6 medal card entries on the Archives site (they often appear 6 up on the one image) and 4 of the 6 Mark Jacobs are on the same Image reference 27574 (including the Army Service Corps soldier), and the other two are on the previous card 27573.

So at most it will cost you 3.50 to see 4 images and none of them are your man then another 3.50 for the other 2 soldiers.

Elementary my dear Watson.  ::)

Don't mind me, I am hyped up on red cordial  ;D

Hi All.

It is very good of you all  to show interest and to take time to reply to my somewhat vague request.

Susan..... See what you mean, but the medal cards only give the persons name...no dob or anything else ( I believe I am right) so any card could be him.

I may have misled you I wrote to Kew to find out about my grandfather as he was in the was 1916 when the last baby was born shown on the birth certificate also he had served as a young man in the Coldstream guards before he was married
Kew got back to me to tell me they had no records of him and advised me to get onto The Coldstream Guards at London ,Like you I had nothing on paper only photos and I knew  the buttons on his jacket were those of the guards
i have an e-mail for the barracks at Aldershot but would have to look it out this is also an idea

Hi Elizabeth.

My grandfather joined up whilst living in Camberley, Surrey. I suppose it would be possible for him to have reported for duty at Aldershot barracks as this is only 6 miles away.

I will write to Kew.  You never know your luck.

Thanks Dud.
