Title: HEATON NORRIS - Old Pictures/Photos Wanted
Post by: Kate on Saturday 22 July 06 21:02 BST (UK)
:)
I have traced my BANKS Ancestors back to Heaton Norris and have managed to obtain many certificates but have no photographs or pictures of them or Heaton Norris.

I have gone back to 1797 with my 3 x Gt:Grandfather, Rivers Banks and his sons John Green Banks (Overseer), Joseph Edward Banks (Royal Artillery and who came to London) and William Banks (Chemist/Druggist).

Does anyone know where I can obtain old photos/pictures of any of these people or places in Heaton Norris so that I can feel closer to them.

Any suggestions would be welcome.    Many thanks...........Kate.

Hi Kate,
You could try e-mailing Stockport heritage library, they
have a good selection of old photographs and may be able to help you.

Hi Pat,

Many thanks for your reply.  I have been in touch with the Stockport Library before for other things and they have been very helpful.  Unfortunately, like everyone else, they are extremely busy now and suggest using a Researcher.
I was just hoping that there may have been a site who stocked photographs of the past for the Heaton Norris area.

Kate.

Hi Kate,
I don't know of any site for Heaton Norris, perhaps someone else will be able to suggest something.
I noticed on the Stockport historical site an entry for 1872, William Banks, Chemist, 72 Lancashire Hill, have you seen it? I seem to remember that someone wrote a book about Heaton Norris and that there were photographs in the book but right now both title and author are refusing to come to mind.
Regards,
Pat.

Hi Pat,

Should the Title and Author come to mind please let me know.

I am pleased to say that William Banks (Chemist), John Green Banks (Overseer
etc:)  Rivers Banks (Surveyor)  Amelia Banks are all mine and I believe that
John and Sarah Banks of the Old Star Inn were my 4 x Gt:Grandparents but
cannot prove it.

Kindest Regards.

Kate

Hi Kate,
Next time I'm at the library I'll see if the book is on the local history shelf and of course I'll let you know.
Do you know where  the "Old Star Inn" was or still is?
The only one that I know of is on Hillgate in Stockport.
Regards,
Pat.

Hi Kate
there was a slim book of old Stockport published several years ago - it is likely that there are some old photos of Heaton Norris within.  Unfortunately, I don't know the name or compiler of the book - pretty sure it is something like Old Stockport or Victorian Stockport or the like

Hi Pat,

The Star Inn, Dale Moor.      Erected 1825 - replacing an older inn.  It was teneted by a John Banks and then Mrs Banks who left in 1833. Were they already in the older inn?. This is all I know about it.     I believe this John was also a Gardener.  I have a Marriage photocopy from Manchester for a John Banks and Sarah Hope for 25th December, 1794 - both from Oldham.
Unfortunately the name of witnesses is unclear and it gives no more information.       Should they be the correct persons then their first child would have been Rivers Banks born 1797 (my 3 x Gt:Grandfather).

I would be very grateful if you could look at the library shelves when you are next in there.

Many thanks.........Kate.

HI Kate
I was in Waterstones today and looked at 3 Stockport books - Images of Stockport by Morris Garrett has only 1 picture of Heaton Norris and that was taken in 1978  (depends on your definition of old :)).  This is of the Club House pub.  This however looks a really nice book jam packed with old photos of old Stockport.  The Steve Cliffe book that IGS mentions also has a photo of old Heaton Norris - a wonderful picture of a horse drawn outing - an old carriage filled to bursting with daytrippers.  This did not really give any idea of H/Norris was like however. There was another book, Stockport Memories but this did not have any photos of H/Norris.
Hope this is helpful

Hi Sallysmum,

I am so grateful for all the help you have given me.

I have been onto Amazon and found the 2 books and could not resist ordering them.  They may not have much about Heaton Norris but will
give me an insight into the Stockport area.  I can't wait for them to arrive.

Kindest Regards....................Kate.

Hi Kate,
As it happens, I have just started a website on the Heaton Norris area. I have included a link below.
There's not much on it at the moment but hopefully I will be able to gather more material to improve the site.
I'm afraid that I can't help you with the people you mention but perhaps my site will be of som interest to you.

Potentially interesting site Bill. I've bookmarked it and I'll come back to it at a later date.

One potential obstacle you might wish to consider is defining exactly where the boundaries of "Heaton Norris" are, particularly over time, as the boundaries have changed several times over the years. There certainly is no specific boundary to the area nowadays and it's tends to melt into the Heatons Mersey and Moor and into Reddish (or Heaton Reddish as it once was).

The other thing to consider, of course, is whether we should be discussing this on the "Cheshire" board as Heaton Norris is north of the river and consequently, apart from a very brief period, has always been in Lancashire!

Part from this, if the original poster is still around, I'd be interested to know if any of your BANKS line connects with the name HOOPER in the 1950s.

Thank you Bill...I have also bookmarked your website and will keep watching.

As you say Ray T it is difficult to define where the Heatons begin and end.  I was born in the mid 1940s in Heaton Norris on Didsbury Road.  The theory going back was that Heaton Norris finished at Bankhall Road off Didsbury Road...if you took a right onto Bankhall Road you were in Heaton Moor carrying on to Heaton Chapel.  Carrying up for a short distance on Didsbury Road it became Heaton Mersey...where I attended both St Winifred's schools.

As BMDs from the Heaton Norris area are found on the Cheshire BMD site I would think it would be most appropriate to discuss on this Cheshire board.

Kindest regards..

Linda

This has recently appeared on the web:

I've seen some of the pictures in Stockport Archives and perhaps more are from there, if not all. Anyway, they are together in one easy to view place.

For anyone who is interested, there is a talk/visual at The Civic Hall, London Rd Hazel Grove on 20 May at 7.30 (for tea/coffee) entitled 'The Four Heatons', organised by The North Cheshire Family History Society. Check the website. I believe the speakers will be promoting their book.

I regret to advise that "Kate" passed away a few years back.
We had connected as her Jane Boome Banks married my Cephas Wyatt of Glossop Derbyshire.
A son Joe Rivers Wyatt migrated to Alberta Canada whilst other Wyatt family came to Australia.

Rex,
This is such sad news,
I replied to a few of Kate's posts when she was trying to connect the Stockport branch of the Banks family to hers, must have been way back in 2005/6.
I'm so sorry to hear that she has passed away.
Thank you for letting us know.
Pat.

Thanks Pat
She had become ill but gladly we had solved a number of queries for her.
Joe Rivers Wyatt prospered in Alberta Canada.
Janice had cared for her mother for many years.

Sorry to go entirely off topic but do you have a connection with the Banks family in Stockport?

If so, do you know of a Banks/Hooper connection? I ask because I'm trying to repatriate a set of WW1 medals and a box of family documents to the Hooper family.

Please send me a PM if you can help.

I'm sorry Ray,
I haven't any connection to the Banks family I was just trying to help Kate.
Good luck with it.

Hi Ray,

I'm sure you've explored every avenue with this one and I think you must have made some headway with it. If it's in this neck of the woods and you think that I might be able to help in any way then please get in touch either here on the board or PM.

Cheers,
Pat.
