Trying to work out what George H ? surname is.
It is written on the back of a old photo of my Granddads.
It does not begin with a M, I have checked with other hand writing of his.
Thank you
-
Is it George Henry?
I would say it begins with an H.
Kerry :)
-
Thank you :) for that suggestion Kerry
I will bear it in mind
Reyz
-
Hi Reyz
I think it might be a P with an L after and looking at the other writing third letter an E, not much help
Mimosa
-
Hi Reyz
Could it be Flewers ?
Hope so, cos thats one of my ineterests ;D

Mimosa
You are a help just by answering and will bear that in mind too
Thank you :)
Babs
Thank you
If your Flewers were in Canada c1905-1919 it might be? :)
Names written on the back of one of my Granddads old Army pictures. Thought it might be nice to trace relatives. I have sent a copy to the Canadian War Museum.
Thanks again everyone

Reyz
It is a shot in the dark but my gran said she had older brothers "shipped out" to canada befor she was born in 1908. I have not been able to trace them as her mother (granny Flewers) tended not to marry her partners and her children were registered under different surnames :o

Always worth a try :D
going to attach the photo (I hope) the Regiment :
No 2 Plan A Coy 5th Can Rfl Troops - they went to Leuze
Granddad was born in 1889 and went back to England to live.

back left : Bert Osborn - Middle George ? - back right Allan Marcotte
front Granddad

Oops is that too big? Might have helped if I said which one was George :
George is standing in the middle.
Best wishes

Thanks Reyz,
Will keep it in mind!

Looks to me like Plevery. It is a name which does exist. If you Google Plevery it will give some info.

Hi Geoff
Now you have pointed it out, it does say that !
Many thanks :D for your help. Off to see what I can find.

Me again
I have looked on the Canadian Soldiers of the 1st World War site
Granddad 's details I already have
The other two chaps in the photo I am pretty sure I have found :)
but a George PLEVERY is not on there..
So I think maybe it was written as it sounded?
Tried loads of variations Palfrey Pulver and similar no luck
Any suggestions? Thank you.
-
how about george P. levery?
or George Hevery,
anne
-
I don't know why, but it looks like Stevens to me.
:-\ (Shoot me now and get it over with) :-\
g a r
-
hi all ,is this any easier to see?
anne
-
It looks like Hevers to me.
-
It looks like h
Hevers to me too, or Plevers P. Levers?
I notice the writer misses fragments of letters as he writes quickly. On 'George' he drops the top of the 'g' after the 'r'. Likewise he drops part of a letter 'y' in 'myself'. so maybe its Plevery.
It is possible perhaps that the first stroke of the first letter could be strong because he is striking out something underneath ( that looks like the loop on a 'P') if that is the case, it could be 'Henry' but I would think as he is writing his own name he would not make a mistake.
-
I thought it looked like Hevers too, at first glance.
Prue
-
It looks like Hevers to me.
Wiseowl.
-
I still think the first letter looks like an H, so I would go with Hevers.
Kerry
-
Hello
Or maybe 'Havers' or 'Lavery'?

I'd go for Plevery

Update : I have checked on the Canadian 'Soldiers of the 1st World War' Site.
Found a : George Arthur HAVERS, George Francis HAVERS and a George Edward LAVERS.
So that gives something to go on, for now .. Thanks! :)

Havers with a badly written s
Dave

Thank you Dave again
Reyz
-
Oh I'm very fickle with my interpretation of handwriting :)
Dave
-
I have looked again, ;D and I think another interpretation is Henery. It might sound unlikely, Thats what I though but I went and put the name into free BMD and there were a few listings of 'George Henery'.
Do you know where he was born?
-
Dave :) everyones suggestions look possible to me too
griz : Thank you for your input
I checked on the Canadian Archives soldiers of the 1st World War site again
A few HENERY's but no George
Tried HENEY no luck
There are 27 George HENRY 's
No idea where he was born. I 'might' ??? have found the other two chaps in the photo.
'If' I have them correct
Bert Osborn was 5ft 1 and born in Farnham Surrey
and Allan Marcotte being 5ft 5 born in Ontario Canada.
Their heights seem to fit in with the picture.
They all joined the Army at different times, so no clue there.
Granddad was born in England and has put his age as two years older than he actually was. He is on the Canadian 1911 Census in Battleford Saskatchewan . Worked in Prince Albert Saskatchewan as a Lumberjack for a time. He went back to England to marry Nan.
Thanks again and if I get anywhere, I will post on here.

Best of luck Reyz
Cheers Dave
-
Thank you Dave :)
I found Granddads demobilization papers.
He enlisted in the '8th Draft Railway Construction '
Canadian Expeditionary Force Toronto.
Served in France and Belgium.
Signed by the Issuing Office - OC No 2 District Depot Toronto
So that might turn out to be a help? Will let you know.
Reyz

Hi Reyz, I also wish you good luck!. :)

Thats nice of you too Griz :) Thank you!

Oh, bother I have racked my brain for hours with this one!...
getting this back to the top so that it can drive everyone crazy once again...
maybe try scanning in the whole back so that the handwriting can be deciphered
from more letters......
My first impression was Plervers/Plevery...but after staring at it for way too
long...I am starting to see a comma rather than a letter... Heron, Pleven,
Plevon, Hevor, Heven, ...Don't bother checking...I already tried 9 million combinations...
There are a few George Heron.
I even thought it could be Ll as a beginning...Tried all the maybes with $
Ibr$...Ile$..Pl$.....oh, yes...the mind goes... :-\
The Henery looks good if it's an "H"....If it was Henry and the "e" was added
by mistake...or he may have used his middle name...which is another possibility...
*BLINK*blink*BLINK*BLINK*blink*BLINK* :P
Here's a funny thing, tho....Reyz... my hubby is from Prince Albert! J.J. :D
-
Looks like Havers to me ..... I found these ..... ::)
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0rr/
I just want to say .... what beautiful eyes he has !! :)
Annie :)
-
Hi JJ :)
Many thanks for your efforts
I have a picture of Granddad working as a lumberjack in Prince Albert.
Looking at GD's Canadian stuff yesterday and there two books of postage stamps, 2 dollars each. On the back of one of them he had written in pencil 'Winnipeg' .... is he trying to help me 80+ years later?
Hi Annie :)
Many thanks too, that is great! We have to go out soon but will have a good look later.
I thought George was rather nice too ;). Have a large group picture and he is in that too.
I made contact with two MARCOTTE researchers but they did not have an Allan. However they are going to keep an eye out.
Thanks again Ladies

Could it - with any stretch of the imagination - be 'STEVENS'?
Lyn S
-
Oh, my goodness, weren't stamps about a penny back then...How many stamps are in this packet? Neat souvenir..... :D J.J.
-
Lyn S :)
Thank you for the suggestion, all worth noting.
JJ :)
I packet has two stamps in and the other has 6 out of 12. George V on them.
As suggested I am going to try and attach the whole of the postcard.
-
:P Bit small for my eyes...any chance we can get it bigger ( higher res?)
asking to much of him? and while you're at it...just the surname as big as
possible? ::) :P :-\ oh he's gonna like me isn't he?
Hey, why not throw another wrench into the works and tell you I also found a Bert Osborne... :P :P :P :P
-
Seeing as you asked JJ, my husband scanned it.
He enlarged it a lot and spotted a mark above the second letter and thinks it is STEVENS ..
Hopefully I will be able to attach it.
Reyz
-
;D Now that's big! No complaints here...tell your hubby that that was what I saw when I darkened the smaller one and was my thought also that it might be a "t"
It's a bit of a stretch, as that looks like a "P" to me but it may well be an "s"...
( How many versions of "r" do I see? :P )
Anyhoo...tell him he's a love and did a great job! :-*
Here's another wrench into the works, though... ;D
George Steven comma...

all the best...J.J.
-
Thank you yet again JJ and I will pass your message on.
I am going to go for STEVENS I see there are a few on the Soldiers of the 1st World War site. Will go through them.
Thank you again :) to everyone who posted on this thread and a gold star to gar and Lyn S.
If I ever find anyone I will post on here.

Here's a black and white version to sit and stare at for hours ;D J.J.

Looks like Plevey to me.

Thanks yet again J.J.
Thank you for your input yn9man.
Looking at the black and white version it does look like PLEVEY
When its really enlarged it looks like STEVENS ???
I will try all suggestions, though STEVENS is the favourite .. for now :)

How about HERON or HERVY

Spent several minutes looking at the various pictures. The more I look the more variations I see.
I don't think anyone has mentioned the following: Hesey, Heror, Herer, Hevey, Plesey, Plesery.
Good luck
