I have a James Brennan, a weaver living in Exeter, Devon. The story goes that he may have come over from Ireland. Check the below website for details.

I am also descended from this James Brennan (and wife Elizabeth Mitchell).

I have a James Brennan as a witness on a birth of a Margaret Palmer in 1878 Antrim [to Samuel Palmer and Rachel Kinnon]. I only see him once though and don't know what the connection was.
When would your James Brennan have been born?

Thank you all
my James Brennan Kirkpatrick was born in 1885 to Thomas and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick nee McIlhennie.
Found them on the 1901 census in the Grange of Doagh but James was not with them only David and Charles his brothers.
My family with out fail always named the children after relatives even up to the 1960's........
So I do believe that I have a relative called James Brennan (he could be called after a" great grandfather" much like his brother "Charles Marshall" )
Any help will be most welcome

By the way - quote from book - Boyhood in Antrim:
The Brennan brothers , Sam and Harry, had a paint business near the Market Square......
Just in case it helps!

Hello again Steve, Couldn't post photo's but I forgot to mention, it's thought that Thomas came from Kilkenny, his father was also Thomas Brennan a Land Steward from a large farm estate in Kilkenny and also thought Thomas had a brother in the priesthood. Regards Jackie.
-
Thank you Jackie
we seem to have a few that fell into priesthood..(not a Brennan yet)
many thanks

Hello again Steve,
It's odd I posted you rather a long message re McElhinney/Brennan connections but it does not appear to have shown up. I have to go out but will get back. My Brennan/ McElhinney connection originates in Lifford/Raphoe and Strabane. Regards Jackie
-
DO YOU HAVE TO GO OUT.......hee hee
you might be my missing link..... :'(

Hi Steve. My Brennan's are very sketchy. My late father was Alan Frances Brennan DOB 1925/6, his mother was young and unmarried at the time of his birth and settled in America soon after. I've still no idea where Dad was born (not even the country) never been able to obtain his birth cert, now seems poss he was born in Queens N.Y. His mother was one of 4 children born to Thomas Brennan and his English wife (all children born Ireland) Thomas Brennan is thought to have originated from a large farm Kilkenny where his father also Thomas was a Land Steward. Thomas is thought to have had a brother in the priesthood. Thomas was a travelling musician with his own concert company, his wife was a concert singer. Thomas and wife separated in 1925ish. Thomas was actively involved in the Uprisings he was in Dublin 1920. Nothing more until 1929 when he is living in William St Raphoe. Found details in St Eunan's Raphoe my father Confirmed 1934 Raphoe, living in William Street (most likely with his grandfather Thomas Brennan). No nothing more about my father until he met and married Mum in Manchester England 1947. He was then living with Susan McElhinney and her family. Susan's died 1952, her husband Bernard died sometime earlier. When Susan McElhinney died she left her house and contents to my father not her own children. The McElhinneys originated Raphoe, Lifford Strabane in contact with their family researcher but haven't discovered the connection with my father, no idea if blood connection or not . Raphoe grave yard have many McElhinneys burials. 1900's Raphoe church had priest James and Patrick Brennan from Andara (spelling?) but don't know if related to my Thomas Brennan. Have contacts with other McElhinney researchers can give you details but off line. I do have some other details re Brennan but let me know if any of this connects with you Brennans/McElhinney's. Regards Jackie
-
Hi Jackie
sorry I have been off line a while....... :'(
The honest answer is...I have not got a clue if we are linked...but you have a McIlhenny(spelling can change)..link to Brennan(spelling can change)......and this is a first for us.
I have always believed that James Brennan Kirkpatrick was named after his great gradfather on his mother side...much like his brother whom was named after his ggfather on his fathers side.
McIlhenny's are very thin on the ground.......and I have now lost the plot completely (these rellies do my head in daily ..lol).... ;D...with the Brennan's.
What Brennan's I do have ,are not yours or mine.... :'(
BUT......this is intresting...might be yours and mine missing link.. ;D

Antrim isn't anywhere near Sligo or Roscommon so unlikely to be a connection to the Antrim one that stevenson is looking for. See that you've posted a few places about your Brennans- the Liverpool one might be the same family?
