Looking for information on William MCCONNELL b. 1820 Ballyvernstown, Antrim and Letitia FOSTER b. 1816 Antrim. They married abt 1854 and had 9 children (John, James, William, Harriet, Hugh, Mary, Thomas, Elizabeth and Joseph).
They all migrated to Victoria after arriving in Australia on the 'Great Britain'. One of the children died before or during the migration. Letitia passed away 1891 and William in 1905.
I do not have alot on this family, especially from the Ireland side. Looking for any info, especially on who William and Letitia's parents are.

Hello

I AM ALSO A DIRECT DESCENDANT OF WILLIAM AND LETITIA MCCONNELL THROUGH THEIR DAUGHTER ELIZABETH. I AM ALSO INTERESTED IN FINDING OUT INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR GRANDPARENTS.
WILLIAM' FATHER WAS CALLED WILLIAM THOMAS AND HIS MOTHER WAS ELIZABETH. I DON'T KNOW HER SURNAME. LETITIA'S PARENTS WERE JOSEPH FOSTER AND HARRIET SEMPLE.

Hi,
I am a direct descendant of William and Letitia's son John.
I don't have alot of information on the family but am willing to share anything you don't have. I also do not know his mother's surname. None of my info is sourced so it may be incorrect, i haven't had a chance to verify anything yet. I also have some info that was emailed to me on the McConnell's but haven't had a chance to go through it all yet. I could send that to you via email if you wanted to have a look at it.
Feel free to ask any questions you have and if i can answer them i will. I will give you my email in case you want it......

Hi,
Would any of the listers writing about Willam McCONNELL know if he had a sister Agnes born 1841 at Ballyclare, Antrim.
I notice the town Ballyerstown, should that be Ballyeastern.
My Agnes's parents were William Mc CONNELL & Margaret TODD, they married in Ballyeastern 1833.
Ballyeastern & Ballyclare are very close together, about a mile apart I've been told.
Cheers

Hi,
When did the family leave Ireland? Were they married in Ireland and were some of the children born in Antrim? There is a William McConnell in Ballyvernstown Glynn Co Antrim in the Griffiths Valuation.
I think the catholic parish is Larne.
http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showlikerecords&citycounty=antrim&parish=Larne
Some baptismal records are available from 1821 at the National Library in Dublin. Also marriages. This could lead to William McConnell parents and siblings details.

Hi Kate,
The information and documents I have indicate that Agnes came to Australia as a single woman.
She married on the voyage out in May1859.
I have searched every ship that arrived here in that year but cannot find them on any passenger list.
At this stage I have no idea if any of her family came with her or followed later.
Cheers
Geoff

Hi,
Unfortunately the baptismal records from BallyClare start in 1869.

Hi Kate,

WILLIAM MCCONNELL WAS BORN IN BALLYMENA IN1820 AND DIED 9 DECEMBER 1905.
HE HAD A BROTHER THOMAS BORN 1825. HE MARRIED CATHERINE DORAN.
JENNY MCCONNELL WAS HIS SISTER. SHE MARRIED SAMUEL LOUGH IN 1847.
JAMES MCCONNELL WAS BORN IN 1830 AND DIED IN 1874.
THERE WERE MORE FAMILY MEMBERS,I AM TRYING TO VERIFY. WILLIAM THE OLDER WAS BURIED AT BALLYVERNSTOWN. IT IS NOT A MISTAKE.
THE BULK OF THE MCCONNELL FAMILY CAME TO AUSTRALIA IN 1874 ON THE GREAT BRITAIN.
WILLIAM MCKINNEY, A GRANDSON OF WILLIAM AND LETITIA ARRIVED EARLIER.

I read with interest your descendancy chart for William McConnell. His son, James (1830-1874) married my ancestor's sister, Elizabeth (or Eliza) Gilbert, on 17 Jan. 1850 in Ballycarry, Templecorran, Co. Antrim, Ireland. For a while, they lived in the New Hampshire / Vermont area of the U.S. and are enumerated in Colebrook, NH on the 1860 census with just one child, Eliza (b. abt 1853). From census and burial records, I only knew of the first two children. Where were the other five children born/married/died? I think I may have been looking the wrong side of the ocean for the family after 1860.
Where did James McConnell die? Do you have an exact date of death?
It appears that you have more information on "12. iii. THOMAS MCCONNELL, b. 1856." Would you be willing to post more details about him?
Thanks.

v. SARAH JANE MCCONNELL, b. 1860; d. 1863.
vi. ELLEN HELENA MCCONNELL, b. 1862; d. 1927; m. JAMES STUART.
vii. WILLIAM JOHN MCCONNELL, b. 1867; d. 1869.
William John McConnell born 10 Apr. 1868 Co. Antrim, son of James McConnell and Eliza Gilbert.

Thanks. There is also the possibility that Ellen Helena McConnell was born 2 October 1862 in Larne, Co. Antrim. I am going to my local FHC to check the birth indexes today.

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864- before that date there will be no birth certificate.

I am posting this as it might have a link with the names Helena and Letitia
Mary Semple b abt 1836 my understanding this is the Mary Semple who contributed to Oscar Lyle’s book and helped many families with their genealogy
Mary was the daughter of James Semple b 26 May 1825 Ballyeaston and Mary Mawhinney.
James was the son of John Semple and Helena Bikkerstaff other children are
Margaret b 29 June 1822, Letitia 18 September 1827, Samuel 03 September 1829, all born Ballyeaston and John b 14 October 1832 Ballyboley

More to add to above post
James Semple b 1825 ballyeaston married to Mary Mawhinney
Mary abt 1815 daughter of Thomas Mawhinney abt 1793 and Mary Morrison 1793-1883
Mary Morrison daughter of James Morrison abt 1773 Carickfergus and Margaret Gingles
Mary Gingles abt 1773 daughter of John Gingles and Mary Moore abt 1775
Mary Moore abt 1775 daughter of Thomas Moore of Kilwaughter and Margaret McConnell of Browndodd
Margaret McConnell daughter of Hugh McConnell and Mary Lyle abt 1682 Browndodd they also had a son Daniel McConnell
My links are to the Lyle family and I am trying to find my Moore family Raloo and probably links to Kilwaughter Moore family the other names I have found and not researched any further

The information I have came from Nora Elizabeth Elizabeth who married Goerge Hannah and lived until recently in Larne. I corresponded with her for some time and she came to Australia for a visit. Athough keen to write and visit she had almost no other information to add to that I have reproduced below. Hope it helps

Regarding the above information the IGI as some submitted records which might be worth making a note of.
Thomas McConnell (c1856-27 June 1943) m. Martha (name listed as McConnell)
1. Lillian McConnell (2 Jan.1878 Larne-3 Dec.1941).
2. James Edgar McConnell (13 Nov.1879 Larne-14 Dec.1901).
3. Thomas Walter McConnell (10 Feb.1882 Larne-Feb.1967).
Then, there are 2 other children for Thomas McConnell and Martha (but should wife be Maggie?):
1. Thomas Allen McConnell (16 Apr.1915 Larne-14 Oct.1915).
2. Walter McConnell (6 June 1918 Larne-20 Jan.1919).

Many thanks aghadowey and njn123!
I guess it indicates that I was searching the wrong side of the ocean. Too bad Nora did not have locations to go with the dates. Then we would know when that family returned to Ireland.
3. JAMES2 MCCONNELL (WILLIAM1) was born 1830, and died 1874. He married ELIZA GILBERT.
Children of JAMES MCCONNELL and ELIZA GILBERT are:
i. WILLIAM JOHN3 MCCONNELL, b. 1851; d. 1854.
ii. ELIZA MCCONNELL, b. 1853; d. 1873.
12. iii. THOMAS MCCONNELL, b. 1856.
iv. JAMES MCCONNELL, b. 1858; d. 1885.
v. SARAH JANE MCCONNELL, b. 1860; d. 1863.
vi. ELLEN HELENA MCCONNELL, b. 1862; d. 1927; m. JAMES STUART.
vii. WILLIAM JOHN MCCONNELL, b. 1867; d. 1869.
I made a visit to our local FHC to check the civil reg. indexes and here are some results for the above family as posted by njn123:
James McConnell death in 1874 in Larne Reg. Dist. (ref. 11-439), aged 44.
Eliza McConnell death in 1 Qtr 1881 in Larne Reg. Dist. (ref 2-539), aged 52.
Eliza McConnell death in 1873 in Larne R. D. (6-480), aged 20.
James McConnell death in 1 Qtr 1885 in Larne R. D. (1-501), aged 27.

FYI, the first William John McConnell (1851-1854) died and is buried in Colebrook, NH, USA.

Wow, thanks for the 1911 information. I was able to locate Thomas McConnell in Larne and he was born in America about 1856!

I am also a direct descendant of William and Letitia (>6th child Thomas >3rd child John >1st child William >4th child Stewart> 3rd child me!) So William is my great great great grandfather.
I have a photo of the McConnells outside of their family home in Drumnadreagh County Antrim, C 1910. (Well that's what the caption says!)

Hi
Would love to see a copy of that photo
