I am looking for any information on my Gt Grandfather, John Blackwood Howie who lived in Sale, Victoria and married Margaret Jane Hutchinson there on 2nd October 1880. I understand John was an accountant and newspaper reporter while living in Sale. Their son [my grandfather] Alexander Hutchinson Howie was born in Sale in 1881. Does anyone have John's work details or possibly a photo of him? He later lived in Melbourne before emmigrating to Dunedin NZ where he died in 1905.
Any information would be gratefully received.

Hello there
I have notice something odd
here in the pioneer index 1836 - 1888
alexdr hutchinson howie's birth is recorder twice once reg no 19111
then rego no 32239 withx1917 next to it
then on the great war index 1914-1920 there is the birth recorded again reg no 32239
Does anyone know why this would happen
I know it probably has no relevance to ozbob
but I am curious and I don't know a lot about genealogy research and would like to know why this would happen
regards jenn

Hi Jenn
There a number of instances like this, the only explanation I can think of is that Alexander required a birth certifcate for some reason and they couldn't find the initial registration or he didn't think the birth was registered, so the birth was registered in 1917.
Cheers

Hi Genni
Thanks for your info, I had most of John's family but don't have any work details. I will try the Sale family history to see if they have any further info or maybe a photo. Not likely I know but worth a try.

Hi Bob
Alexander Hutchinson Howie is my grandfather too. I am the 4th child of his son Norman Blackwood Howie who died in Christchurch in 1956 aged 40. My mother remarried and we took the name of Brown. I would love to know what part of NZ you are in.
Tomorrow we will be in Sale, Victoria checking family history. What was your father's name?
The only cousin I have met so far is Russell Howie whose father was King and they lived in Wellington. I have the complete work record and death certificate of Alex Howie who was a sea captain for the Union Steamship Company. Would love to make contact.

Hi Phil,
Glad to see you have made a contact. ;D
I am sorry you will be unable to reply to Bob's PM (personal message) until you have made a couple more posts so please just reply to us here. (Please do not post your email address or other personal information on the public board - we do not permit this to help protect our members from spam and other abuses) If you reply a couple more times you will be able to talk privately to Bob. Bob may have sent you his email and if that is the case you will now be in contact, but it is still a good idea to get a couple more posts on the board. Then if other members make the connection and wish to speak to you privately, they will be able to do so.
Cheers Kris :)

Hi Bob
Sorry can't send you an individual message as I have only just joined RootsChat and apparently need a few posts before I can do this on this website.
We live in Blenheim, Marlborough, NZ and my other siblings live in Christchurch (I grew up there as well). We lost our Howie heritage as our Mum remarried and would not talk about it. It seems the Howie brothers didn't make old bones! My older brother Brian is 65 but he was known as Brown as well.
Would love to exchange information so please keep in touch.
Regards
Phil Brown (P.M. Brown)
