I would like to hear from anyone who can help with information on William Teague who married Ann or Johanna Nicholls. They came to Australia with their family in 1858. I think they came from Redruth.
-
Hi Vicki R
Welcome to Rootschat.
Have you any idea when William or his wife were born
Joe :)
-
I think Johanna was born in Redruth and William may have been born in Ruan.
-

Sorry Joe, but going on records I do have my Johanna was 50 in 1858, the year they came to Australia. That would put her birth at 1808. I found a note saying that her father could have been a James Nicholls. I haven't been able to confirm that though.

Hi again Vicki
The original image has been spoilt therefore unable to give birthplace of children after William.

thanks Kris, I have been looking back through some of my notes and the name Nicholas was written as a possible option to Nicholls. The parents I have written in those notes for Johanna are James and Grace. So perhaps it was not Nicholls but Nicholas after all. I really appreciate your help.
-
Thats Great Vicki. Sounds like we have found the correct marriage then. Looking at this St Enoder marriage and the age of Ann at death. Witness James Nicholas. ??? I'm suspicious. It is starting to look like Ann and Johanna were perhaps sisters. I don't have any microfiche for Kenwyn to check on witnesses and marital status. I wonder if the OPC may be able to help.
http://www.cornwall-opc.org/PAR/H-K/Kenwyn.htm
or Cornwall Record Office I am sure could provide you with a printout of that entry at a minimal cost
Email: cro[at]cornwall.gov.uk .....(replace [at] with @)....
It would be interesting to see what that Kenwyn Marriage says. As the union would have been frowned upon, perhaps they married in Kenwyn where they were not known. Good Luck...Kris ;D
-
You have been great Kris. This has given me a strong new thread to follow. I agree about the sisters. On the ships list I have a son William listed. He is the eldest but there is no William mentioned on the baptism list for William and Johanna. He could be a child from that first marriage He definately existed and was with them when they arrived in Australia. Thanks again for all your help. This is a wonderful website and I will definately be telling all my fellow researchers about it. Bye for now Vicki
-
Yes Vicki, Joe found William in 1851 so he certainly exists. I just don't see a baptism in St Enoder for him. Perhaps it is in Kenwyn. William and Ann were only married 1 month so I think William is Johanna's and here is 1841 with him listed
HO107/150/1Folio 14 Page 21

Glad you are enjoying the site. Pass the word for sure. ;D
Best wishes....Kris :D

Aha the plot thickens Vicki ;D Just had a thought to try again. It came to me with him listed as 13 in 1841 that they may not have been married and look what I just found ;D
Baptism St Enoder
NICHOLLS William base son of Joanna 25 Apr 1828 (Nothing else listed)
This has to be William which is quite odd if they married in March. Perhaps the minister did not accept the marriage or they were keeping quiet about it. ;)
Cheers Kris :D

Kris you keep bringing up more questions to be answered. It is intriguing for sure. Does the word "base" written in the records refer to illegitimate? Are the names Nicholls and Nicholas referring to the same family or different ones. That is a little confusing.
-
Morning Vicki,
Yes base born does mean illigitimate. I believe it is the same family. Nicholls and Nicholas are interchangeable names. My research buddy has Nicholas in her line when I was helping her with some records I found the same thing. One record would be Nicholls and the next would be Nicholas. If you use the IGI you will find the same thing and I know she did with BMD's after civil registration began, some of her certs were under Nicholls and some under Nicholas. We have variants with all names and this seems to be the most common with these two names.
Have a nice day......Kris :D
-
What an interesting system. Nothing like confusing the hell out of people who are trying to find you. I do appreciate all the help you have given. I'm off to play tennis. It is 8.40am here. Miserable weather but I need the exercise. Bye
-
Kris do you know where I can check a marriage for James Nicholas and Grace ? I think they are the parents of my Johanna Nicholas.
-
Hi again Vicki,
I have just been having a look about and I don't see the marriage in Redruth. So many Nicholls/Nicholas's everywhere. There is one in Kenwyn 7 Sep 1799 James NICHOLAS=Grace OPIE. Since we have baptisms from 1800-1821 I wouldn't expect the marriage to be too much before 1800. I do notice among other entries on the IGI to parents James and Grace I see a Collen b 18 Apr1802 St Agnes. Could be of interest that I noticed a marriage and Death for him while I was going through the St Enoder microfiche for you. I also noticed a James of the right age to be the brother was also in St Enoder. I have looked through St Agnes marriages for that time period also and see no James = Grace there either so maybe the Kenwyn one is your entry ??? .....Kris :D
