Title: Barnsley 1903 were would they be buried?
Post by: CassT on Sunday 16 July 06 08:08 BST (UK)
Hi

I have obtained a death certificate which states that ANN PAPE, widow of William Pape died 29 6. 1903 in the Union Workhouse Barnsley, however the certificate does not record where Ann was buried.

I have checked the National Burial Index and had no luck.

Would anybody have an idea of how I can find out were Ann was buried

Thanks

Cass

It is also possible that if she was from out of Barnsley she could have been returned to that place for burial.  Contact Bansley Library and ask to be put through to the local history section and then ask if the Works=house used a specific church for burials.  The fact is by 1903 it is likely that they were using a municipal burial ground.  Why was she in the workhouse?  Was it ill health or due to being poor?  If the latter then the liklihood is she will be in a municipal cemtery and in an unmarked public grave with up to 20 others.  ( known as paupers graves although this isn't pc)

Barnsley council are pretty good at telling me where to find my relatives.

or a search on http://www.cemeteries.org.uk/  shows an Ann Pape buried in the borough between 1901 - 1909 but tokens are needed for the cemetery and grave info.

Hi, many thanks for the replies to this old enquiry .

years ago as a result of following a lead on Rootschat,  I emailed Barnsley Council and received reply that my G G Grandmother  Ann PAPE is buried in Barnsley Cemetery in Grave E 124 with her son John Lane and his wife Martha and members of their family

A wonderful Roots Chatter visited the cemetery and sent me photos of the area of the cemetery where the grave is located (no Headstone)

the people buried in grave E 124 are

Anne PAPE    died 29 June 1903  buried 2 July 1903 ,
Frances Ann LANE buried 3 Sept 1941
Robert LANE         buried 2 Feb 1937
Martha Ann LANE  buried 14 March 1919
John LANE            buried 1 Sept 1927

I am sorry that I did not update the 2006 enquiry

Thanks again

Cass
