Could I please request a lookup for John Whitlock born c 1838 who may be in Surrey in 1861. I thought he was born in Norfolk but according to the ancestry index this John was born Middlesex but it is often found that place of birth is incorrect for single people in a household with people born in other counties. In 1871 John was living in London but he was married 1863 so could be anywhere in 1861. His family were involved in shoemaking business but he was not in that in 1871 although he was in 1881-1891. Any assistance gratefully received.
Thanks

Carmel,
Is the John Whitlock you refer to in the 1871 census this one?
Bow London RG10/578/85/43
John is born 1837, Hales Norfolk & he's a privateer.
Wife Ann & daughters Kate, Harriet & Alice?
In 1881 there is John Whitlock born Hales Norkolk, 1841, bootmaker with wife Fanny age 25 & son Harry. Are these the right one's? Did John remarry ?
Have you found him in 1841 or 1851? Anymore information you have about him might help pin-point the right John Whitlock.

Hi Carmel,
He's not to be found in 1861 :( As he was a privateer in 1871 it's very possible he was not in the country. He seems very consistant about where he was born throughout the census so he should be easy to spot even when I take out the surname on the search...but no luck. His marriage to Ann Clarke? in December quarter 1863 took place in Norwich as did the birth of his first 3 children, so it looks to me as if he was on service in the years surrounding 1861 & it was only later he moved to London. He's not at home with his parents in 1861.
Probably by researching this privateer business in Norfolk & what might have taken him out of the country you might get some leads.

Thanks Jane
Did you check on the two of right age who were in Surrey according to ancestry index? I thought it may have been a case of enumerator writing wrong birthplace as I have come across census before where the birthplace given is same as that of others in the household where a boarder/ lodger or servant is known to be from a different place. I thought the occupation and other details may give a clue if one of those in Surrey could have been him or were they obviously not -such as someone living with family? I will see if google gives any clues to the privateer occupation.
Thanks again

Hi Denise
I don't have them in my files sorry. Have you tried contacting Peter Whitlock? I had a look on his Whitlock family association pages but can't get downloads to work now. He was helpful to me a few years ago when I was at the stuck stage with my family. This is a link to contact details http://whitlock.castlewebs.net/wfa/contact.htm
Best Wishes
